A new ultra high energy gamma ray telescope at Ohya mine
The search for ultra high energy gamma rays coming from point sources is one of the main experimental aims. A fast air shower timing system was constructed at ICRR for the study of the angular resolution of the system and operated approximately half a year. The characteristics of the surface array of Ohya air shower telescope is described
On the tau-functions of the Degasperis-Procesi equation
The DP equation is investigated from the point of view of
determinant-pfaffian identities. The reciprocal link between the
Degasperis-Procesi (DP) equation and the pseudo 3-reduction of the
two-dimensional Toda system is used to construct the N-soliton solution of the
DP equation. The N-soliton solution of the DP equation is presented in the form
of pfaffian through a hodograph (reciprocal) transformation. The bilinear
equations, the identities between determinants and pfaffians, and the
-functions of the DP equation are obtained from the pseudo 3-reduction of
the two-dimensional Toda system.Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures, Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and

Charge ordering in the spinels AlVO and LiVO
We develop a microscopic theory for the charge ordering (CO) transitions in
the spinels AlVO and LiVO (under pressure). The high degeneracy
of CO states is lifted by a coupling to the rhombohedral lattice deformations
which favors transition to a CO state with inequivalent V(1) and V(2) sites
forming Kagom\'e and trigonal planes respectively. We construct an extended
Hubbard type model including a deformation potential which is treated in
unrestricted Hartree Fock approximation and describes correctly the observed
first-order CO transition. We also discuss the influence of associated orbital
order. Furthermore we suggest that due to different band fillings AlVO
should remain metallic while LiVO under pressure should become a
semiconductor when charge disproportionation sets in
Background light measurements at the DUMAND site
Ambient light intensities at the DUMAND site, west of the island of Hawaii were measured around the one photoelectron level. Throughout the water column between 1,500m and 4,700m, a substantial amount of stimulateable bioluminescence is observed with a ship suspended detector. But non-stimulated bioluminescence level is comparable, or less than, K sup 40 background, when measured with a bottom tethered detector typical of a DUMAND optical module
Electronic structure of spinel-type LiV_2O_4
The band structure of the cubic spinel compound LiV_2O_4, which has been
reported recently to show heavy Fermion behavior, has been calculated within
the local-density approximation using a full-potential version of the linear
augmented-plane-wave method. The results show that partially-filled V 3d bands
are located about 1.9 eV above the O 2p bands and the V 3d bands are split into
a lower partially-filled t_{2g} complex and an upper unoccupied e_{g} manifold.
The fact that the conduction electrons originate solely from the t_{2g} bands
suggests that the mechanism for the mass enhancement in this system is
different from that in the 4f heavy Fermion systems, where these effects are
attributed to the hybridization between the localized 4f levels and itinerant
spd bands.Comment: 5 pages, revte
Analysis of signalling pathways using continuous time Markov chains
We describe a quantitative modelling and analysis approach for signal transduction networks.
We illustrate the approach with an example, the RKIP inhibited ERK pathway [CSK+03]. Our models are high level descriptions of continuous time Markov chains: proteins are modelled by synchronous processes and reactions by transitions. Concentrations are modelled by discrete, abstract quantities. The main advantage of our approach is that using a (continuous time) stochastic logic and the PRISM model checker, we can perform quantitative analysis such as what is the probability that if a concentration reaches a certain level, it will remain at that level thereafter? or how does varying a given reaction rate affect that probability? We also perform standard simulations and compare our results with a traditional ordinary differential equation model. An interesting result is that for the example pathway, only a small number of discrete data values is required to render the simulations practically indistinguishable
Chemical Potential Shift in NdCeCuO: Contrasting Behaviors of the Electron- and Hole-Doped Cuprates
We have studied the chemical potential shift in the electron-doped
superconductor NdCeCuO by precise measurements of
core-level photoemission spectra. The result shows that the chemical potential
monotonously increases with electron doping, quite differently from
LaSrCuO, where the shift is suppressed in the underdoped
region.
If the suppression of the shift in LaSrCuO is attributed
to strong stripe fluctuations, the monotonous increase of the chemical
potential is consistent with the absence of stripe fluctuations in
NdCeCuO. The chemical potential jump between
NdCuO and LaCuO is found to be much smaller than the
optical band gaps.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
