The travelogue of Kambalpōsh was published in 1847 in Delhi under the title of Tārīkh-e Yūsufī(The Accounts of Yusuf), and republished in 1873 in Lucknow under the new title of ‘Ajā’ibāt-e Farang(The Wonders of Europe). It is said that this is the fi rst minute and informative travelogue of Europe written in Urdu. In this travelogue, the prose style of which is very vivid and straightforward, Kambalpōsh gave a detailed description of his observations, impressions and refl ections. This travelogue is undoubtedly signifi cant as a representative work of Urdu prose of the nineteenth century and as a valuable source of information about Britain, France, Egypt, India and other places. It deserves to be treated as an object of religious and cultural studies as well, because it contains Kambalpōsh’s rationalist interpretation of religion, severe criticism on avaricious religious leaders, and great admiration for generous British people and its welfare system.学術論
