    Comprehensive investigation of areae gastricae pattern in gastric corpus using magnifying narrow band imaging endoscopy in patients with chronic atrophic fundic gastritis.

    Background:  Barium radiographic studies have suggested the importance of evaluating areae gastricae pattern for the diagnosis of gastritis. Significance of endoscopic appearance of areae gastricae in the diagnosis of chronic atrophic fundic gastritis (CAFG) was investigated by image-enhanced endoscopy. Materials and Methods:  Endoscopic images of the corpus lesser curvature were studied in 50 patients with CAFG. Extent of CAFG was evaluated with autofluorescence imaging endoscopy. The areae gastricae pattern was evaluated with 0.2% indigo carmine chromoendoscopy. Micro-mucosal structure was examined with magnifying chromoendoscopy and narrow band imaging. Results:  In patients with small extent of CAFG, polygonal areae gastricae separated by a narrow intervening part of areae gastricae was observed, whereas in patients with wide extent of CAFG, the size of the areae gastricae decreased and the width of the intervening part of areae gastricae increased (p < 0.001). Most areae gastricae showed a foveola-type micro-mucosal structure (82.7%), while intervening part of areae gastricae had a groove-type structure (98.0%, p < 0.001). Groove-type mucosa had a higher grade of atrophy (p < 0.001) and intestinal metaplasia (p < 0.001) compared with foveola type. Conclusions:  As extent of CAFG widened, multifocal groove-type mucosa that had high-grade atrophy and intestinal metaplasia developed among areae gastricae and increased along the intervening part of areae gastricae. Our observations facilitate our understanding of the development and progression of CAFG

    CO(JJ=1-0) mapping survey of 64 galaxies in the Fornax cluster with the ALMA Morita array

    We conduct a 12^{12}C16^{16}O(JJ=1-0) (hereafter CO) mapping survey of 64 galaxies in the Fornax cluster using the ALMA Morita array in cycle 5. CO emission is detected from 23 out of the 64 galaxies. Our sample includes dwarf, spiral and elliptical galaxies with stellar masses of Mstar106.311.6M_{\rm star}\sim10^{6.3-11.6}~M_\odot. The achieved beam size and sensitivity are 15×815''\times8'' and 12\sim12~mJy~beam1^{-1} at the velocity resolution of 10\sim10~km~s1^{-1}, respectively. We study the cold-gas (molecular- and atomic-gas) properties of 38 subsamples with Mstar>109M_{\rm star}>10^9~M_\odot combined with literature HI data. We find that: (1) the low star-formation (SF) activity in the Fornax galaxies is caused by the decrease in the cold-gas mass fraction with respect to stellar mass (hereafter, gas fraction) rather than the decrease of the SF efficiency from the cold gas; (2) the atomic-gas fraction is more heavily reduced than the molecular-gas fraction of such galaxies with low SF activity. A comparison between the cold-gas properties of the Fornax galaxies and their environmental properties suggests that the atomic gas is stripped tidally and by the ram pressure, which leads to the molecular gas depletion with an aid of the strangulation and consequently SF quenching. Pre-processes in the group environment would also play a role in reducing cold-gas reservoirs in some Fornax galaxies.Comment: 53 pages, 41 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

    Background Factors Affecting Visual Acuity at Initial Visit in Eyes with Central Retinal Vein Occlusion : Multicenter Study in Japan

    Purpose: To determine the baseline characteristics of patients with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) that were significantly associated with the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at the initial examination. Methods: This was a retrospective multicenter study using the medical records registered in 17 ophthalmological institutions in Japan. Patients with untreated CRVO (≥20-years-of-age) who were initially examined between January 2013 and December 2017 were studied. The patients’ baseline factors that were significantly associated with the BCVA at the initial examination were determined by univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses. Results: Data from 517 eyes of 517 patients were analyzed. Univariate analyses showed that an older age (r = 0.194, p < 0.001) and the right eye (r = −0.103, p < 0.019) were significantly associated with poorer BCVA at the initial visit. Multivariate analyses also showed that an older age (β = 0.191, p < 0.001) and the right eye (β = −0.089, p = 0.041) were significantly associated with poorer BCVA at the initial visit. Conclusions: The results indicate that an older age, a known strong factor, and the right eye were significantly associated with poorer BCVA at the initial visit to the hospital. These results suggest that functional and/or anatomical differences between the right and left eyes may be involved in these results

    A long diffuse giant umbilical cord (GUC), caused by umbilical cord edema associated with a patent urachus, is an extremely rare anomaly. While patients with diffuse GUC appear to experience no significant complications and a good prognosis, little is known about their etiology and prenatal course. Here, we report the first case of prenatally diagnosed diffuse GUC resulted from patent urachus in a monochorionic diamniotic twin with selective intrauterine growth restriction. This case indicates that GUC is epigenetic and unrelated to multiple births

    Background: Left ventricular (LV) apical sparing by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) has not been widely accepted to diagnose transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM), because it is time consuming and requires a level of expertise. We hypothesized that automatic assessment may be the solution for these problems. Methods-and-Results: We enrolled 63 patients aged ≥70 years who underwent 99mTc-labeled pyrophosphate (99mTc-PYP) scintigraphy on suspicion of ATTR-CM and performed TTE by EPIQ7G, and had enough information for two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography at Kumamoto University Hospital from January 2016 to December 2019. LV apical sparing was described as a high relative apical longitudinal strain (LS) index (RapLSI). Measurement of LS was repeated using the same apical images with three different measurement packages as follows: (1) full-automatic assessment, (2) semi-automatic assessment, and (3) manual assessment. The calculation time for full-automatic assessment (14.7 ± 1.4 sec/patient) and semi-automatic assessment (66.7 ± 14.4 sec/patient) were significantly shorter than that for manual assessment (171.2 ± 59.7 sec/patient) (p < 0.01 for both). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the area under curve of the RapLSI evaluated by full-automatic assessment for predicting ATTR-CM was 0.70 (best cut-off point; 1.14 [sensitivity 63%, specificity 81%]), by semi-automatic assessment was 0.85 (best cut-off point; 1.00 [sensitivity, 66%; specificity, 100%]) and by manual assessment was 0.83 (best cut-off point; 0.97 [sensitivity, 72%; specificity, 97%]). Conclusion: There was no significant difference between the diagnostic accuracy of RapLSI estimated by semi-automatic assessment and that estimated by manual assessment. Semi-automatically assessed RapLSI is useful to diagnose ATTR-CM in terms of rapidity and diagnostic accuracy
