    Globalization – An Anthropological Approach

    Get PDF
AbstractMy paper comprises an approach of globalization using some main concepts and perspectives of cultural anthropology, aiming at a clearer description of the phenomenon and its current trends. Concerning this topic, we can find a vast bibliography available to us in Romania which reflects three different perspectives on it: a positive and promoting one; a negative, rejecting one; and a neutral, merely informative one. None of these seemed to me profound and wide enough to offer explanations, descriptions, interpretations, argumentations, in order to objectively help the reader understand globalization, as it is increasingly affecting each of us nowadays. In my view, cultural anthropology is the science that has the most appropriate theoretical and methodological background to contribute to the clarification of this phenomenon; among other scientific discourses on this topic (e. g. the economic, political, geo-strategic ones) its own should be considered. Therefore, I intend to resume the main opinions on this topic formulated by some Romanian and foreign researchers, and eventually to articulate one of my own

The importance of dietary control in skin and hair disorders in dogs

The frequency of hair and skin disorders in dogs has increased in recent years. Diet has a role to play in dealing with these disorders. Several companies produce commercial diets to help treat these disorders. These disorders include Atopic dermatitis, Zinc responsive dermatosis, food allergy dermatitis and dandruff. For this study two different foods were use. These were premium original chicken and brown rice and Super premium anallergenic. They were fed to four dogs of different breeds. One dog which had dandruff was fed with premium original chicken and brown rice. The other three, which included dogs with pruritus, dandruff and food allergy dermatitis, were fed with superpremium anallergenic dog food. The results of the trial were as follows: the dog with dandruff, which was fed with premium dog food, showed no modifications during the trial period. In fact its condition remained the same. The dog with pruritus worsened during the trial period when it was fed with super-premium anallergenic dog food. The dog with dandruff fed with super-premium analelergrnic did not show any modifications and its condition remained the same. The dog with food allergy dermatitis shows no modifactions or lesions when fed with super-premium anallergenic dog food. Three of the four dogs were reluctant to eat the foods initially. The conclusion of the trial was the fact that the diets used were unable to illustrate improvement in two of the four dogs. The condition of one dog worsened during the period while the condition of the other one was managed when eating the food

Some of the most common nutritional disorders are overweight and obesity, a proportion of approximately 59% of dogs and cats being affected. A permanent challenge for vets is weight management, including the prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity.Corporeal score and body-weight loss in dogs and cats have been monitored by feeding various diets. The study was conducted on a total of 10 animals (6 dogs and 4 cats), monitoring the effect of three types of food for dogs and two types for cats suffering from overweight and obesity.  Cooked food, dry food diet and premium dry food were investigated. We determined the quality and gross chemical composition of food and we measured corporeal score, weekly weight loss percentage and the number of calories consumed daily. We also appreciated the quality of life and activity level of the animals at the beginning and at the end of the trial. Nutritional management of investigated diets for overweight and obesity in dogs and cats revealed that through the smallest caloric restriction, dry food diet presented the highest efficiency, dogs and cats loosing weight steadily without losing muscle mass. Although the satiety effect occurs when the animals reach their ideal weight, the Rebound effect was not present

Assessment of digestibility and fecal score of raw meatbased diet (B.A.R.F.) in dog feeding

The aim of this study was to determine digestibility in the B.A.R.F (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) diet. The study was performed on a number of 5 dogs, from which fecal samples and a sample of their ration were collected over a period of 5 days. Some of the reasons for owners to choose this diet were: longer and healthier life, lack of dental tartar, no smell of the oral cavity, the appearance of fur, solving dermatological problems, lower fecal volume and lower defecation frequency, more energy and less expensive. One of the benefits of the BARF diet is the reduced volume of feces, due to optimal digestion and high absorption. Once one makes the switch to the BARF diet one will notice that their pet will defecate less and its consistency will be compact, dark in color. Exceptions occur when the diet is not properly balanced. Following the determination of the digestibility of the BARF diet in dogs, we obtained high values especially for protein (96.55%) and fat (99%). The value obtained for mineral substances of organic origin was also high (54%). We consider that the high digestibility is due to a very good adaptation of the digestive tract to the natural ingredients used in the diet
