    Optimization of the visibility of graphene on poly-Si film by thin-film optics engineering

    A multilayer optical system containing poly-Si film, SiO 2 film, and Si substrate (poly-Si substrate) has been designed to enhance the visibility of graphene in contact with poly-Si. Film thicknesses of poly-Si and SiO 2 have been optimized by parametric study of the integral contrast of single layer graphene using transfer matrix theory. The multilayer poly-Si substrate and the most commonly used 285 nm SiO 2 /Si substrate (SiO 2 substrate) have been fabricated. Graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition on Ni catalyst has been transferred to the substrates and the visibility of the graphene on the different substrates has been compared. The samples have been characterized by optical microscope, illuminated with light from halogen lamp, and/or filtered with a 600 nm narrow band optical filter. The contrast of graphene on poly-Si substrate has been increased to near 8.7 under 600 nm narrow band illumination from nearly invisible under ordinary illumination, while the contrast of graphene on SiO 2 remains almost the same. Raman spectroscopy has been used to verify the presence of the single layer graphene on the poly-Si substrate.</p

    Fabrication and characterisation of suspended microstructures of tantalum

    Funding: UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).An investigation of the influence of deposition and post-fabrication processes on the final mechanical structure of tantalum beams is reported in the present study. The final deflection profiles of doubly supported beams made from compressive and tensile-stressed films have been studied experimentally. An optimum finite element model has been developed to predict the buckling behaviour of the doubly supported beams by considering the boundary conditions in the form of a compressive stress and an applied load. No matter which etch release method has been used, the initial stress state of the as-deposited films has been found to have a significant impact on the final deflection profile of the fabricated device. The compressive-stressed films have presented larger deflection in the final released beams than the tensile-stressed films. Taking into account the type of etch release methods, the beams that have been released in the dry etch release processes have been found to deform more vertically than those released in the wet-etch release method. Moreover, it has been found that the amplitude of vertical deflection increases with the increase of the beam length and thickness. The results indicate that optimum profiles of tantalum suspended structures can be obtained from the tensile-stressed films that have been released by the wet etching method with an aspect ratio of 1:48.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Divergent environmental preferences and areas of sympatry of tick species in the Amblyomma cajennense complex (Ixodidae)

    Four species of Neotropical ticks, Amblyomma mixtum, Amblyomma cajennense, Amblyomma tonelliae and Amblyomma sculptum (formerly included in the catch-all name A. cajennense), have an allopatric distribution in much of their range, with areas of parapatry for at least two of them. We inferred the abiotic niches of these organisms using coefficients of a harmonic regression of the temperature and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI, reflecting plant stress) from remotely sensed data from MODIS satellites with 0.05° spatial resolution. Combinations of coefficients describing the phenology of these two variables pointed to divergent niche preferences, compatible with previous events of vicariance among the species. Amblyomma cajennense has been recorded in areas with small variations in temperature and NDVI. The remaining species were recorded in areas with large variations. The maximum environmental niche overlap was ∌73.6% between A. mixtum and A. cajennense and 73.5% between A. tonelliae and A. sculptum. Projecting these inferences on the geographical space revealed probable areas of sympatry or parapatry between A. mixtum and A. cajennense or between A. tonelliae and A. sculptum, the latter of which was confirmed with field collections. The A. sculptum distribution overlaps with that of A. tonelliae in northern Argentina and Paraguay; parapatry occurs at one extreme of the conditions occupied by both species. Compared with areas of allopatry, sites with both species had consistently lower temperatures, except for 10–12 weeks during the summer, and higher NDVI values throughout the year. We hypothesise that the overlap between A. tonelliae and A. sculptum resulted from secondary contact between populations, with A. sculptum adapting to sites with high water availability to balance high summer temperatures. Additional surveys of the areas of spatial overlap among these species are necessary to elucidate the forces driving their evolution and their adaptation to the environment.Fil: Estrada Peña, AgustĂ­n.     Observation of second flexural mode enhancement in graphene resonators

    The enhancement of the second flexural mode in a monolayer graphene resonator by an inhomogeneous electrostatic actuation force has been observed. The devices have been fabricated by transferring the graphene onto a poly-Si/SiO2/Si substrate whereby the poly-Si has been released to produce graphene resonators. Enhancement of the second harmonic has been demonstrated by varying the actuation voltage, achieving an amplitude enhancement of up to 95% of the fundamental mode. The reported findings open new perspectives for graphene resonant sensors with enhanced sensitivity.</p

    Analytical Modeling for the Bending Resonant Frequency of Multilayered Microresonators with Variable Cross-Section

    Multilayered microresonators commonly use sensitive coating or piezoelectric layers for detection of mass and gas. Most of these microresonators have a variable cross-section that complicates the prediction of their fundamental resonant frequency (generally of the bending mode) through conventional analytical models. In this paper, we present an analytical model to estimate the first resonant frequency and deflection curve of single-clamped multilayered microresonators with variable cross-section. The analytical model is obtained using the Rayleigh and Macaulay methods, as well as the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Our model is applied to two multilayered microresonators with piezoelectric excitation reported in the literature. Both microresonators are composed by layers of seven different materials. The results of our analytical model agree very well with those obtained from finite element models (FEMs) and experimental data. Our analytical model can be used to determine the suitable dimensions of the microresonator’s layers in order to obtain a microresonator that operates at a resonant frequency necessary for a particular application
