Life History and Ecology of Coyotes in the Mid-Atlantic States: A Summary of the Scientifi c Literature
Relatively little information has been published on Coyotes in the eastern United States, particularly in the mid-Atlantic region, the last area of the contiguous US to be colonized by Coyotes. Increases in eastern Coyote distribution and abundance have been documented, and concerns about their impact on wildlife and livestock are growing. Information from published and unpublished manuscripts, theses, dissertations, and state wildlife agency records in the mid-Atlantic region were examined and synthesized. This review provides a comprehensive summary of Coyote ecology in the mid-Atlantic for natural resource managers and researchers

Liquid Phase Transition in the Postsynaptic Density?
An assembly of scaffold proteins termed the postsynaptic density (PSD) is attached to the postsynaptic membrane of excitatory glutamatergic synapses [1]. The scaffold serves to immobilize glutamate receptors in the membrane directly across from the position where glutamate is released from the presynaptic terminal. It also houses and organizes biochemical machinery whose job is to respond to particular patterns of electrical activity by increasing the strength of the synapse [2]. Synaptic strengthening helps to form new circuits that represent our experience [3]. These circuits are our memories. Biochemical machinery in the PSD strengthens the synapse by increasing the size of the PSD scaffold, the number of anchored receptors, and the size of the presynaptic active zone. A larger scaffold, more release sites, and more receptors means a stronger synapse, and vice versa
Application of Reliability and Linear Regression to Enterprise Architecture in Support of the US Air Force\u27s Capability Review and Risk Assessment
This research explored the use of modeling and enterprise architecture in the analysis of Air Force Capabilities. The Air Force accomplishes this through the Capability Review and Risk Assessment (CRRA). The CRRA is currently performed by building architectures which contain Process Sequence Models (PSMs). PSMs are scored by Subject Matter Experts to determine the probability of successfully completing the mission they model and ultimately to determine the risk associated to Air Force capabilities. Two findings were identified. The first is that creating additional architectural viewpoints, some of which are currently being proposed for version 2.0 of the DoD Architecture Framework, can benefit CRRA development. The second is PSMs have fundamental limitations associated with the inability to capture dependencies among activities as well as the inability to get beyond binary success criteria to address issues of capability sufficiency. To remedy these limitations a model called Extended Sequence Models (ESMs) was developed. ESMs extend PSMs by using reliability modeling techniques combined with linear regression to show dependencies between components. This model also allows the effects of capability sufficiency to be captured and related to mission success
Translesion synthesis polymerases contribute to meiotic chromosome segregation and cohesin dynamics in Schizosaccharomyces pombe
Translesion synthesis polymerases (TLSPs) are non-essential error-prone enzymes that ensure cell survival by facilitating DNA replication in the presence of DNA damage. In addition to their role in bypassing lesions, TLSPs have been implicated in meiotic double-strand break repair in several systems. Here, we examine the joint contribution of four TLSPs to meiotic progression in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. We observed a dramatic loss of spore viability in fission yeast lacking all four TLSPs, which is accompanied by disruptions in chromosome segregation during meiosis I and II. Rec8 cohesin dynamics are altered in the absence of the TLSPs. These data suggest that the TLSPs contribute to multiple aspects of meiotic chromosome dynamics

Implications of no-tillage system in faba bean production: Energy analysis and potential agronomic benefits
Background: Given the nutritional value of faba bean, however its susceptibility to water deficit, especially in Mediterranean environment, tillage practices need to be modified in order to adapt the crop to dry and low rainfall conditions and promote the interest in its cultivation. Objective: To identify whether no-tillage system can be considered as a sustainable means in faba bean cultivation under Mediterranean condition. Method: The study was conducted during a 6-year period (2010/11 to 2015/16) in southern Italy within wheat-faba bean rotation framework of a long-term experiment. The effect of No-Tillage (NT) on agronomic and energy parameters of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) cultivation was evaluated and compared to those of Conventional (CT) and Reduced (RT) Tillage. Results: The agronomic results indicate that NT performed better and/or is comparable to CT, while its application was 28% and 30% more energy efficient compared to CT and RT respectively. For agronomic parameters, tillage had a significant effect on number of plant m -2 , grain yield, grain protein content and 100-seed weight whereas year effect was significant for yield components and quality parameters. Energy indexes, instead, were significantly affected by both factors. NT gave the best results in terms of energy efficiency, energy intensity and net energy, and consumed 39% and 36% less non-renewable energy than CT and RT, respectively. Conclusion: Our findings revealed that the key benefit of NT in rainfed faba bean is its ability to produce sufficient yield of high quality with a significant reduction in energy inputs entailed the fewest field operations and therefore lowest energy requirements
Natality of Yearling Coyotes in West Virginia
Minimal information is available regarding the reproduction of coyotes (Canis latrans) in the Mid-Atlantic region, which includes the states of Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. Since reproductive information is useful to assess populations and determine management strategies and because this information is unavailable for the Mid-Atlantic, we examined uterine tracts of 66 female coyotes collected from February to May 2010 for fetuses. We measured fetuses using a digital caliper and approximated dates of conception and parturition. Nine (13.6%) female coyotes were pregnant with visible fetuses; seven of these females were yearlings (1.5–2.5 y old). Average litter size of yearling coyotes was 5.4 (SE=0.48). We estimated an average conception date of 2 February and an average parturition date of 6 April. Conception and parturition dates were within the reported range for coyotes, though one female successfully bred in early January, which is earlier than reported in the literature. The relatively high proportion (30.4%) of yearling females breeding in West Virginia may reflect abundant food resources, low density of coyotes, increasing human-caused mortality, or a combination of these factors. Reproductive information reported here will be helpful in monitoring coyote population trends and in the assessment of management strategies

Prolactin and Prolactin Receptor Expression in Rat, Small Intestine, Intraepithelial Lymphocytes During Neonatal Developmen
Intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) are specialized T cells found between the epithelial cells of
the small intestine. Because of their location, IEL are the first lymphocytes to contact intestinal
bacteria and food antigens. In the neonate, IEL may be the first cells of the immune system
to interact with milk-borne hormones including prolactin (PRL). PRL, an endocrine
hormone abundant in breast milk, interacts with cells through surface receptors. PRL has
been shown to function as an immunoregulator and may affect the development of the newborn's
immune system. To determine if PRL plays a role in IEL development, small intestine
IEL from rats of various ages were examined for the presence of surface prolactin receptor
(PRL-R) and several lymphoid markers by flow cytometry. Between birth and 96 days of age
about 80% of IEL were found to express PRL-R. These same cells also expressed the mRNA
for PRL. Additionally, all of the IEL subpopulations examined were found to express PRL-R.
Analysis of the normal development of rat IEL revealed an age related increase in total IEL,
CD4 positive cells as well as a peak in interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R) expression at weaning.
In summary, the results indicate that IEL express PRL and PRL-R. In addition, an activation
marker, IL-2R, changes in expression during neonatal development
