    Sharing of general loading in double glazed units. The BAM analytical approach

    Double Glazed Units (DGUs) consist of two glass panes held together by structural edge seals. Calculation methods for DGUs consider that actions applied on one pane develop effects in all the panes, due to the coupling from the entrapped gas. Various methods have been proposed in standards to evaluate this load sharing, which depends upon the stiffness of the glass panes, the thicknesses of spacer and the size of the DGU. A comprehensive analytical formulation, the Betti’s Analytical Method (BAM), has been recently proposed to calculate the load sharing in DGUs of any shape, composed by glass panes of arbitrary thickness, with various support conditions at the borders and various types of external actions, including concentrated and line loads. Simple expressions can determine the gas pressure as a function of a universal shape function, which coincides with the deformed surface of a simply supported plate, of the same shape of the DGU, under uniformly distributed load. Here, comparisons are made with numerical analyses, performed by implementing an ad hoc routine in the software Straus7, developed by Maffeis Engineering, where the deflection of the glass panels is iteratively calculated, until the volume enclosed reaches a value compatible with the pressure exerted by the gas. The numerical routine, that is part of an integrated parametric approach to the façades design, allows precise calculations for any kind of build-up, panel shapes and load conditions

    A Preliminary Analysis for Understanding Variations in Mountain Springs’ Water Availability under Climate Change in Aosta Valley

    The availability of freshwater resources in alpine mountain areas has been affected by the impacts of climate change on groundwater storage mechanisms. A web of complex interactions characterizes climate systems, and several potential effects of climate change in such areas remain largely unknown. Therefore, examining how groundwater storage mechanisms are changing in response to climate-driven agents is becoming increasingly crucial. To comprehend the existing relationship between changes in weather conditions and water availability in the Aosta Valley region (Northwestern Italy) and how their trends have changed over the last decade, a 7-year discharge series of different Aosta Valley springs (Promise, Alpe Perrot, Promiod, Cheserod) and precipitation data of the related meteorological stations (Aymaville-Viayes, La Thuile-Villaret, Champdepraz, Sant Vincent) were analyzed. The extent of the correlations between springs discharge measurements and hydrometeorological data was investigated. Besides, precipitation and flow rate trend analyses using the Mann–Kendall and Sen’s slope trend detection tests were performed. The Aymaville-Viayes, La Thuile-Villaret, Champdepraz, and Sant Vincent meteorological stations revealed an overall decreasing trend in annual rainfall (mm), with a slight increase in intensity (mm/day) as a result of the reduction in rainfall events (number of rainy days). Nonetheless, based on the analysis of flow rate data relating to the associated springs, Alpe Perrot, Cheserod, and Promise show an overall increasing trend of discharge over time. Although the Cheserod and Promise springs were not found to be highly correlated with rainfall, their aquifers appear to positively respond to the modified climate conditions, increasing the amount of groundwater stored. The moderate correlation values of these two springs can be a consequence of several factors such as aquifer features, distance from the weather station, and solid precipitation amounts that supply water in the following hydrogeological year. Being able to continuously monitor the effects induced by changed climatic conditions on water reserves through simplified analysis approaches such as those presented in this paper is increasingly necessary. Moreover, implementing future studies through in-depth analyses of soil infiltration, groundwater recharge and storage mechanisms are required to predict the mountain aquifers’ behavior in changing climatic conditions

    A multicenter epidemiological study on second malignancy in non-syndromic pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma patients in Italy

    SIMPLE SUMMARY: As no previous studies had assessed the risk of second malignant tumors in patients with pheochromocytomas/paragangliomas (PPGLs), we aimed to evaluate whether these patients could have an increased risk of additional malignancy, comparing them with patients in the general population who had a first malignancy and developed a second malignant tumor. We demonstrated that PPGL patients had higher incidence of additional malignant tumors and the risk of developing a second malignant tumor increased with age at diagnosis. As the main tumors were prostate, colorectal and lung/bronchial cancers in males, and breast cancer, differentiated thyroid cancer and melanoma in females, our findings could have an impact on the surveillance strategy. ABSTRACT: No studies have carried out an extensive analysis of the possible association between non-syndromic pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) and other malignancies. To assess >the risk of additional malignancy in PPGL, we retrospectively evaluated 741 patients with PPGLs followed-up in twelve referral centers in Italy. Incidence of second malignant tumors was compared between this cohort and Italian patients with two subsequent malignancies. Among our patients, 95 (12.8%) developed a second malignant tumor, which were mainly prostate, colorectal and lung/bronchial cancers in males, breast cancer, differentiated thyroid cancer and melanoma in females. The standardized incidence ratio was 9.59 (95% CI 5.46–15.71) in males and 13.21 (95% CI 7.52–21.63) in females. At multivariable analysis, the risk of developing a second malignant tumor increased with age at diagnosis (HR 2.50, 95% CI 1.15–5.44, p = 0.021 for 50–59 vs. 60- vs. <50-year). In patients with available genetic evaluation, a positive genetic test was inversely associated with the risk of developing a second tumor (HR 0.25, 95% CI 0.10–0.63, p = 0.003). In conclusion, PPGLs patients have higher incidence of additional malignant tumors compared to the general population who had a first malignancy, which could have an impact on the surveillance strategy

    A group membership algorithm with a practical specification

    Presents a solvable specification and gives an algorithm for the group membership problem in asynchronous systems with crash failures. Our specification requires processes to maintain a consistent history in their sequences of views. This allows processes to order failures and recoveries in time and simplifies the programming of high level applications. Previous work has proven that the group membership problem cannot be solved in asynchronous systems with crash failures. We circumvent this impossibility result building a weaker, yet nontrivial specification. We show that our solution is an improvement upon previous attempts to solve this problem using a weaker specification. We also relate our solution to other methods and give a classification of progress properties that can be achieved under different models

    2D Coordination Polymers Based on Isoquinoline-5-Carboxylate and Cu(II)

    By combining isoquinoline-5-carboxilic acid with Cu(II) ions under several different conditions, we were able to obtain novel metallorganic materials, among which two 2D coordination polymers, CP 1 and CP 2 which were also characterized by SC-XRD. Ratio of solvents (EtOH : DMF) in the mixture employed during their synthesis has a marked effect in selecting the formation of one species or the other, which basically differ in the coordination at the Cu(II) center due to k1/k2 denticity of the carboxylate ligands.Two 2D coordination polymers which exclusively form depending on DMF : EtOH solvent mixture, fully characterized by SC-XRD, are among the novel materials formed by the combination of Cu(II) with isoquinoline-5-carboxylate ligand described here.imag
