Uterine Leiomyomata as a Cause of Abdominal Compartment Syndrome in the Postpartum Period
Uterine leiomyomas are common benign smooth muscle tumors that often occur during the reproductive years. Although many cases may not result in significant complications, negative pregnancy outcomes have been associated with the size and location of the fibroids. Degeneration of fibroids can occur as early as the late first trimester when they undergo significant volumetric growth, contributing to pain during pregnancy. While myomectomy is typically avoided during pregnancy, conservative management with anti-inflammatory medications may be effective. Surgical removal or preterm delivery may be necessary if symptoms persist. Abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) is a rare condition characterized by sustained elevated intra-abdominal pressure leading to organ failure. Although ACS resulting from large-volume leiomyomas in the postpartum period has not been previously described, we present a case of a 25-year-old patient with massive uterine fibroids who required indicated preterm delivery via primary cesarean section at 25 weeks gestation. Her postpartum course was complicated by ACS, requiring emergent surgical decompression. When a large fibroid burden is present during pregnancy or in the postpartum period, ACS should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Early diagnosis and timely surgical decompression are necessary to prevent organ dysfunction and worsening maternal outcomes
Structure and dielectric response in the high ferroelectric Bi(Zn,Ti)O-PbTiO solid solutions
Theoretical {\em ab initio} and experimental methods were used to investigate
the Bi(Zn,Ti)O-(1-)PbTiO (BZT-PT) solid solution. We find that
hybridization between Zn 4 and O 2 orbitals allows the formation of
short, covalent Zn-O bonds, enabling favorable coupling between A-site and
B-site displacements. This leads to large polarization, strong tetragonality
and an elevated ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition temperature.
nhomogeneities in local structure near the 90 domain boundaries can be
deduced from the asymetric peak broadening in the neutron and x-ray diffraction
spectra. These extrinsic effects make the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase
transition diffuse in BZT-PT solid solutions
Dual roles of protein tyrosine phosphatase kappa in coordinating angiogenesis induced by pro-angiogenic factors
A potential role may be played by receptor-type protein tyrosine phosphatase kappa (PTPRK) in angiogenesis due to its critical function in coordinating intracellular signal transduction from various receptors reliant on tyrosine phosphorylation. In the present study, we investigated the involvement of PTPRK in the cellular functions of vascular endothelial cells (HECV) and its role in angiogenesis using in vitro assays and a PTPRK knockdown vascular endothelial cell model. PTPRK knockdown in HECV cells (HECVPTPRKkd) resulted in a decrease of cell proliferation and cell-matrix adhesion; however, increased cell spreading and motility were seen. Reduced focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and paxillin protein levels were seen in the PTPRK knockdown cells which may contribute to the inhibitory effect on adhesion. HECVPTPRKkd cells were more responsive to the treatment of fibroblast growth factor (FGF) in their migration compared with the untreated control and cells treated with VEGF. Moreover, elevated c-Src and Akt1 were seen in the PTPRK knockdown cells. The FGF-promoted cell migration was remarkably suppressed by an addition of PLCγ inhibitor compared with other small inhibitors. Knockdown of PTPRK suppressed the ability of HECV cells to form tubules and also impaired the tubule formation that was induced by FGF and conditioned medium of cancer cells. Taken together, it suggests that PTPRK plays dual roles in coordinating angiogenesis. It plays a positive role in cell proliferation, adhesion and tubule formation, but suppresses cell migration, in particular, the FGF-promoted migration. PTPRK bears potential to be targeted for the prevention of tumour associated angiogenesis
Practice-Focused, Constructivist Grounded Theory Methodology In Higher Education Leadership Research
A growing body of education research considers practices, however there is less focus on a methodology that enables practical analysis of practices. Use of practice theory is growing, particularly in work and organisational studies, but practice focused studies more frequently address theoretical than methodological agenda. This chapter proposes a practice-focused, constructivist grounded theory methodology as one approach which can address this gap. After first considering the ways in which, separately and in combination, practice-theory and constructivist grounded theory can support higher education leadership and management research, the chapter considers implementation of this methodology by drawing on a study into the practice of authority in higher education leadership. It concludes by considering some implications for the ways in which practices can be understood and the affordances and limitations of this methodology.Peer reviewe
XMM-Newton confirmation of a new intermediate polar: XMMU J185330.7-012815
We report the results from a detailed spectro-imaging and temporal analysis
of an archival XMM-Newton observation of a new intermediate polar XMMU
J185330.7-012815. Its X-ray spectrum can be well-described by a
multi-temperature thermal plasma model with the K-lines of heavy elements
clearly detected. Possible counterparts of XMMU J185330.7-012815 have been
identified in optical and UV bands. The low value of the inferred X-ray-to-UV
and X-ray-to-optical flux ratios help to safely rule out the possibility as an
isolated neutron star. We confirm the X-ray periodicity of ~238 s, but
different from the previous preliminary result, we do not find any convincing
evidence of phase-shift in this observation. We further investigate its
properties through an energy-resolved temporal analysis and find the pulsed

On the low-temperature lattice thermal transport in nanowires
We propose a theory of low temperature thermal transport in nano-wires in the
regime where a competition between phonon and flexural modes governs the
relaxation processes. Starting with the standard kinetic equations for two
different types of quasiparticles we derive a general expression for the
coefficient of thermal conductivity. The underlying physics of thermal
conductance is completely determined by the corresponding relaxation times,
which can be calculated directly for any dispersion of quasiparticles depending
on the size of a system. We show that if the considered relaxation mechanism is
dominant, then at small wire diameters the temperature dependence of thermal
conductivity experiences a crossover from to -dependence.
Quantitative analysis shows reasonable agreement with resent experimental

Late stages of the evolution of A-type stars on the main sequence: comparison between observed chemical abundances and diffusion models for 8 Am stars of the Praesepe cluster
Aims. We aim to provide observational constraints on diffusion models that
predict peculiar chemical abundances in the atmospheres of Am stars. We also
intend to check if chemical peculiarities and slow rotation can be explained by
the presence of a weak magnetic field.
Methods. We have obtained high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra
of eight previously-classified Am stars, two normal A-type stars and one Blue
Straggler, considered to be members of the Praesepe cluster. For all of these
stars we have determined fundamental parameters and photospheric abundances for
a large number of chemical elements, with a higher precision than was ever
obtained before for this cluster. For seven of these stars we also obtained
spectra in circular polarization and applied the LSD technique to constrain the
longitudinal magnetic field.
Results. No magnetic field was detected in any of the analysed stars. HD
73666, a Blue Straggler previously considered as an Ap (Si) star, turns out to
have the abundances of a normal A-type star. Am classification is not confirmed
for HD 72942. For HD 73709 we have also calculated synthetic Delta-a photometry
that is in good agreement with the observations. There is a generally good
agreement between abundance predictions of diffusion models and values that we
have obtained for the remaining Am stars. However, the observed Na and S
abundances deviate from the predictions by 0.6 dex and >0.25 dex respectively.
Li appears to be overabundant in three stars of our sample.Comment: Accepted for publication on A&
DCGL: an R package for identifying differentially coexpressed genes and links from gene expression microarray data
Summary: Gene coexpression analysis was developed to explore gene interconnection at the expression level from a systems perspective, and differential coexpression analysis (DCEA), which examines the change in gene expression correlation between two conditions, was accordingly designed as a complementary technique to traditional differential expression analysis (DEA). Since there is a shortage of DCEA tools, we implemented in an R package ‘DCGL’ five DCEA methods for identification of differentially coexpressed genes and differentially coexpressed links, including three currently popular methods and two novel algorithms described in a companion paper. DCGL can serve as an easy-to-use tool to facilitate differential coexpression analyses
