Potential relationship of epistemic games to group dynamics and learning orientations towards physics problem solving
Current investigations into pedagogical goals of introductory algebra-based
physics students at the University of Central Arkansas, by learning orientation
towards an in-class metacognitive group problem solving task, seek to determine
possible relationships with attitudinal shifts and course performance. Students
thus far have been untreated with known group-based learning pedagogies, so as
to establish trends of common group habits, and ultimately to properly inform
implementation of group-based pedagogies in reaction to these trends. However,
students' group dynamics and learning orientations prove difficult to map to
group-based measurements; an estimate of group learning orientation and
preferred working group dynamic is here explored as a potential means of
interpreting students' use of problem solving strategies. A means of "sampling"
audiovisual data in a live classroom of several simultaneous groups is also

Consideration of learning orientations as an application of achievement goals in evaluating life science majors in introductory physics
When considering performing an Introductory Physics for Life Sciences course
transformation for one's own institution, life science majors' achievement
goals are a necessary consideration to ensure the pedagogical transformation
will be effective. However, achievement goals are rarely an explicit
consideration in physics education research topics such as metacognition. We
investigate a sample population of 218 students in a first-semester
introductory algebra-based physics course, drawn from 14 laboratory sections
within six semesters of course sections, to determine the influence of
achievement goals on life science majors' attitudes towards physics. Learning
orientations that, respectively, pertain to mastery goals and performance
goals, in addition to a learning orientation that does not report a performance
goal, were recorded from students in the specific context of learning a
problem-solving framework during an in-class exercise. Students' learning
orientations, defined within the context of students' self-reported statements
in the specific context of a problem-solving-related research-based course
implementation, are compared to pre-post results on physics problem-solving
items in a well-established attitudinal survey instrument, in order to
establish the categories' validity. In addition, mastery-related and
performance-related orientations appear to extend to overall pre-post
attitudinal shifts, but not to force and motion concepts or to overall course
grade, within the scope of an introductory physics course. There also appears
to be differentiation regarding overall course performance within health
science majors, but not within biology majors, in terms of learning
orientations; however, health science majors generally appear to fare less well
on all measurements in the study than do biology majors, regardless of learning

Effect of sugar replacement with stevianna and inulin on the texture and predictive glycaemic response of muffins
The application of sugar replacers used in bakery products is of growing interest to the food industry, as it provides the possibility of delivering products with reduced energy and sugar. The aim of this study was to investigate the textural properties and glycaemic responses of muffins made using stevianna and inulin. Two levels of sugar replacer were used (50% and 100%). Total replacement of sucrose gave muffins with a firmer texture than the control (PÂ <Â 0.05); 50% replacement, however, gave a similar texture to control. The predicted glycaemic response was reduced in sugar-replaced muffins compared to control samples. In particular, the replacement of sucrose with 100% stevianna caused a significant decrease in the standardised area under the curve values. Therefore, there exists the potential to regulate the glycaemic response of muffins by the incorporation of 50% stevianna or 50% inulin without affecting their textural properties
The massive neutron star or low-mass black hole in 2S0921-630
We report on optical spectroscopy of the eclipsing Halo LMXB 2S0921-630, that
reveals the absorption line radial velocity curve of the K0III secondary star
with a semi-amplitude K_2=92.89 +/- 3.84 km/s, a systemic velocity
=34.9 +/- 3.3 \kms and an orbital period P_orb of 9.0035 +/- 0.0029 day
(1-sigma). Given the quality of the data, we find no evidence for the effects
of X-ray irradiation. Using the previously determined rotational broadening of
the mass donor, and applying conservative limits on the orbital inclination, we
constrain the compact object mass to be 2.0-4.3 Msolar (1-sigma), ruling out a
canonical neutron star at the 99% level. Since the nature of the compact object
is unclear, this mass range implies that the compact object is either a
low-mass black hole with a mass slightly higher than the maximum neutron star
mass (2.9 Msolar) or a massive neutron star. If the compact object is a black
hole, it confirms the prediction of the existence of low-mass black holes,
while if the object is a massive neutron star its high mass severely constrains
the equation of state of nuclear matter.Comment: Accepted by ApJ
Phase-resolved optical and X-ray spectroscopy of low-mass X-ray binary X1822-371
(Abridged) X1822-371 is the prototypical accretion disc corona X-ray source,
a low-mass X-ray binary viewed at very high inclination, thereby allowing the
disc structure and extended disc coronal regions to be visible. We study the
structure of the accretion disc in X1822-371 by modelling the phase-resolved
spectra both in optical and X-ray regime. We analyse high time resolution
optical ESO/VLT spectra of X1822-371 to study the variability in the emission
line profiles. In addition, we use data from XMM-Newton space observatory to
study phase-resolved as well as high resolution X-ray spectra. We apply the
Doppler tomography technique to reconstruct a map of the optical emission
distribution in the system. We fit multi-component models to the X-ray spectra.
We find that our results from both the optical and X-ray analysis can be
explained with a model where the accretion disc has a thick rim in the region
where the accretion stream impacts the disc. The behaviour of the H_beta line
complex implies that some of the accreting matter creates an outburst around
the accretion stream impact location and that the resulting outflow of matter
moves both away from the accretion disc and towards the centre of the disc.
Such behaviour can be explained by an almost isotropic outflow of matter from
the accretion stream impact region. The optical emission lines of HeII 4686 and
5411 show double peaked profiles, typical for an accretion disc at high
inclination. However, their velocities are slower than expected for an
accretion disc in a system like X1822-371. This, combined with the fact that
the HeII emission lines do not get eclipsed during the partial eclipse in the
continuum, suggests that the line emission does not originate in the orbital
plane and is more likely to come from above the accretion disc, for example the

Risk factors for breast cancer in a population with high incidence rates.
BackgroundThis report examines generally recognized breast cancer risk factors and years of residence in Marin County, California, an area with high breast cancer incidence and mortality rates.MethodsEligible women who were residents of Marin County diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997-99 and women without breast cancer obtained through random digit dialing, frequency-matched by cases' age at diagnosis and ethnicity, participated in either full in-person or abbreviated telephone interviews.ResultsIn multivariate analyses, 285 cases were statistically significantly more likely than 286 controls to report being premenopausal, never to have used birth control pills, a lower highest lifetime body mass index, four or more mammograms in 1990-94, beginning drinking after the age of 21, on average drinking two or more drinks per day, the highest quartile of pack-years of cigarette smoking and having been raised in an organized religion. Cases and controls did not significantly differ with regard to having a first-degree relative with breast cancer, a history of benign breast biopsy, previous radiation treatment, age at menarche, parity, use of hormone replacement therapy, age of first living in Marin County, or total years lived in Marin County. Results for several factors differed for women aged under 50 years or 50 years and over.ConclusionsDespite similar distributions of several known breast cancer risk factors, case-control differences in alcohol consumption suggest that risk in this high-risk population might be modifiable. Intensive study of this or other areas of similarly high incidence might reveal other important risk factors proximate to diagnosis
Metastatic progression and gene expression between breast cancer cell lines from African American and Caucasian women
African American (AA) women have a lower overall incidence of breast cancer than do Caucasian (CAU) women, but a higher overall mortality. Little is known as to why the incidence of breast cancer is lower yet mortality is higher in AA women. Many studies speculate that this is only a socio-economical problem. This investigation suggests the possibility that molecular mechanisms contribute to the increased mortality of AA women with breast cancer. This study investigates the expression of 14 genes which have been shown to play a role in cancer metastasis. Cell lines derived from AA and CAU patients were analyzed to demonstrate alterations in the transcription of genes known to be involved in cancer and the metastatic process. Total RNA was isolated from cell lines and analyzed by RT-PCR analysis. Differential expression of the 14 targeted genes between a spectrum model (6 breast cancer cell lines and 2 non-cancer breast cell lines) and a metastasis model (12 metastatic breast cancer cell lines) were demonstrated. Additionally, an in vitro comparison of the expression established differences in 5 of the 14 biomarker genes between African American and Caucasian breast cell lines. Results from this study indicates that altered expression of the genes Atp1b1, CARD 10, KLF4, Spint2, and Acly may play a role in the aggressive phenotype seen in breast cancer in African American women
