    Basic principles of reducing post-harvest losses in commercially viable fish species (Nile perch, Tilapia and Mukene) in Uganda

    Reduction of post-harvest losses in fisheries sub-sector, often considered synonymous with high quality fish , demands the active participation of all stakeholders ranging from the fisherman to the consumer. Their participatory input is required incessantly by regulatory agencies in the enforcement of intervention measures intended to limit or eliminate processes and/or practices that cause high losses along the handling and processing chain. In Uganda, the principal cause of losses in post-harvest fisheries is microbiological spoilage exacerbated by inappropriate practices and inadequate handling, processing and packaging facilities. Different relevant authorities have cited diverse estimated percentage losses (20-30%) occurring in cured fish, depending on species, preservation method, packaging and mode of transportation. FOSRI (1997) preliminary study indicated that the losses might be relatively much lower than 20%, however, a planned detailed study will actualise loss figures in cured as well as fresh fish

    The effect of artisanal preservation methods on nutritional security of “Mukene” Rastrineobola argentea caught from Lakes Victoria and Kyoga in Uganda

    The artisanal fish preservation methods in Uganda are characterized by extreme operating conditions. Consequently, vital nutritional components diminish in value and quantity which renders fish consumer nutritionally insecure. To establish the magnitude of nutritional loss, duplicate samples of Mukene Rastrineobola argentea were collected from Kiyindi landing site on L. Victoria and Moone landing site on L. Kyoga. Each set of duplicate samples was divided into five portions and kept on ice. For each preservation method a portion was processed into respective products at Food Bioscience and Agri-Business Laboratories aside from the control (fresh) sample. Both preserved and control samples were analysed for nutrient loss at Department of Chemistry, Makerere University using AOAC methods. The composition of fatty acids was determined by methanolysis gas chromatography and Mass spectrophotometry of the resultant methyl esters. The results indicate that nutrients of all preserved samples did not vary significantly from the control except for some fatty acids. The Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in fresh samples declined from 6.72% to 1.08% in deep-fried samples constituting 83.93% nutrient loss. The sum ratio w3:w6 as well as EPA: DHA (Docosahexaenoic) ratio in fried samples also varied significantly (p<0.5) lower than 0.668 and 0.20 for the average of either preservation methods and experts recommended ratio respectively. Further research has been recommended to ascertain the causative factor, since Mukene frying is being promoted in the Great lakes region as alternative method to sun-drying. In conclusion, regular consumers of fried Mukene do not benefit much from the nutritional and health attributes of Omega 3 and 6

    Seemingly Unrelated Regression Analysis of the Cost and Health-Related Quality of Life Outcomes of the REVAMP Randomized Clinical Trial

    Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the 9-month cost and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) outcomes of resistance versus viral load testing strategies to manage virological failure in low-middle income countries. Methods: We analyzed secondary outcomes from the REVAMP clinical trial: a pragmatic, open label, parallel-arm randomized trial investigating resistance versus viral load testing for individuals failing first-line treatment in South Africa and Uganda. We collected resource data, valued according to local cost data and used the 3-level version of EQ-5D to measure HRQOL at baseline and 9 months. We applied seemingly unrelated regression equations to account for the correlation between cost and HRQOL. We conducted intention-to-treat analyses with multiple imputation using chained equations for missing data and performed sensitivity analyses using complete cases. Results: For South Africa, resistance testing and opportunistic infections were associated with statistically significantly higher total costs, and virological suppression was associated with lower total cost. Higher baseline utility, higher cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4) count, and virological suppression were associated with better HRQOL. For Uganda, resistance testing and switching to second-line treatment were associated with higher total cost, and higher CD4 was associated with lower total cost. Higher baseline utility, higher CD4 count, and virological suppression were associated with better HRQOL. Sensitivity analyses of the complete-case analysis confirmed the overall results. Conclusion: Resistance testing showed no cost or HRQOL advantage in South Africa or Uganda over the 9-month REVAMP clinical trial
