The relationship between histochemical enzyme activities of brain tumors and clinical features of the patients

Human brain turnors removed from 126 patients were histochemically examined and following results were obtained. 1. In general, alkaline phosphatase activity is decreased in poorly differentiated gliomas, but is not related to the tumor cell infiltration. 2. All the cases of alkaline phosphatase negative gliomas have poor reconvalescent course and most of the positive cases show good reconvalescence. 3. Alkaline phosphatase, leucine aminopeptidase and acid phosphatase activities are remarkable in fibroblastic meningioma, moderate or feeble in meningocytic meningioma, and negative in malignant meningioma. 4. The activities of alkaline phosphatase, β-esterase, leucine aminopeptidase and acid phosphatase are decreased in most of meningocytic meningiomas when the duration of symptoms and signs is short. 5. Succinic dehydrogenase, malic dehydrogenase, isocitric dehydrogenase and β-glucuronidase are strongly reactive in malignant meningioma; from strong to moderate in meningocytic meningioma and from moderate to feeble in fibroblastic meningioma. 6. There is a slight increasing tendency of the activities of succinic dehydrogenase, malic dehydrogenase, isocitric dehydrogenase in fibroblastic meningioma and p·glucuronidase for a short duration of symtoms and signs. 7. In the case of acoustic neurinomas the higher the alkaline phosphatase activity, the longer is the duration of symptoms and signs.</p

Passive anaphylaxis and IgE antibody production are compromised in tumor necrosis factor- and in granulocyte–macrophage colony stimulating factor-deficient mice

ABSTRACTBackgroundA number of recent studies has demonstrated a critical role for mast cells and mast cell-derived cytokines, especially tumour necrosis factor (TNF), in the control of host defense mechanisms during inflammation. In the presesnt study, we investigated whether TNF-deficient (TNF−/−) and granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF)-deficient (GM-CSF−/−) mice expressed defects in normal mast cell function.MethodsBecause the first step in the passive cutaneous anaphylactic (PCA) reaction is fixation of the antibody to mast cells, we tried to obtain a PCA in TNF−/− and GM-CSF−/−mice.ResultsWhile an anti-dinitrophenyl IgE monoclonal antibody induced a strong PCA reaction in wild-type mice, it was not possible to obtain a PCA reaction in either TNF−/− or GM-CSF−/− mice. We next examined whether mast cells were present in these mice and if so, did they have functional FcεRI receptors on their surface. The number of mast cells in smears from the peritoneal fluid of the TNF−/− and GM-CSF−/− mice was similar to that seen in wild-type mice. However, the expression of FcεRI on mast cells from the peritoneal fluid of TNF−/− and GM-CSF−/− mice, measured by either rosetting assay or FACScan analysis, was compromised compared with wild-type mice. Previous studies have established that defects in FCεRI expression often have found that IgE production was compromised in both TNF−/− and GM-CSF−/− mice.ConclusionsThe observed defects may partially explain the immunodeficiency of these cytokine-deficient animals during infection

NMR studies of the incommensurate helical antiferromagnet EuCo2P2 : determination of the antiferromagnetic propagation vector

Recently Ding et al. [Phys. Rev. B 95, 184404 (2017)] reported that their nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study on EuCo2_2As2_2 successfully characterized the antiferromagnetic (AFM) propagation vector of the incommensurate helix AFM state, showing that NMR is a unique tool for determination of the spin structures in incommensurate helical AFMs. Motivated by this work, we have carried out 153^{153}Eu, 31^{31}P and 59^{59}Co NMR measurements on the helical antiferromagnet EuCo2_2P2_2 with an AFM ordering temperature TNT_{\rm N} = 66.5 K. An incommensurate helical AFM structure was clearly confirmed by 153^{153}Eu and 31^{31}P NMR spectra on single crystalline EuCo2_2P2_2 in zero magnetic field at 1.6 K and its external magnetic field dependence. Furthermore, based on 59^{59}Co NMR data in both the paramagnetic and the incommensurate AFM states, we have determined the model-independent value of the AFM propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0.73 ±\pm 0.09)2π\pi/cc where cc is the cc-axis lattice parameter. The temperature dependence of k is also discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1704.0629

Positive geographic correlation between soldiers’ weapon size and defensive prowess in a eusocial aphid, Ceratovacuna japonica

Some aphid species produce a soldier caste with enlarged forelegs and horns (weapons). It has been hypothesised that the evolution of morphological specialization by soldiers in social aphids is accelerated by high predation pressure, but this possibility has not been tested. Here, we investigated the relationship between local predator abundance and soldiers\u27 weapon size and aggressiveness in a prey-predator system comprising a eusocial aphid, Ceratovacuna japonica, and its predators (larvae of the butterfly Taraka hamada and of the moth Atkinsonia ignipicta) in two populations with different predator abundances. We found that the soldiers in the predator-abundant population had larger weapons and were more aggressive than those in the population with lower predator abundance. Furthermore, the soldiers\u27 defensive prowess (evaluated as the survival of aphids in the presence of predators) was greater in the predator-abundant population. These results provide the first evidence that a population of eusocial aphids experiencing high predation pressure has soldiers with pronounced defensive traits and defensive prowess
