    Anisotropic lattice with nonperturbative accuracy

    Get PDF
We determine the nonperturbative anisotropic parameter of the gauge action in the quenched approximation with less than 1% accuracy using the Sommer scale measured by the L\"uscher-Weisz algorithm or smearing technique. We also study the nonperturbative O(a)-improvement of the quark action. The bare quark anisotropy is determined using the masses from the temporal and spatial directions. For the determination of the O(a)O(a) improvement coefficients, we apply the Schr\"odinger functional method.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figures, Lattice2004(improved

Anisotropic lattices for precision computations in heavy flavor physics

    Get PDF
We study the anisotropic lattice QCD for precision computations of heavy-light matrix elements. Our previous study in which the lattices are calibrated with a few percent accuracy has already given results comparable to the existing calculations. This suggests that even higher precision may be achieved by a more precise calibration of anisotropic lattices. We describe our strategy to tune the gauge and quark parameters with accuracies much less than 1 % in the quenched approximation.Comment: 3 papes, 2 figures, Lattice2003(heavy

Asymptotically Friedmann self-similar scalar field solutions with potential

We investigate self-similar solutions which are asymptotic to the Friedmann universe at spatial infinity and contain a scalar field with potential. The potential is required to be exponential by self-similarity. It is found that there are two distinct one-parameter families of asymptotic solutions, one is asymptotic to the proper Friedmann universe, while the other is asymptotic to the quasi-Friedmann universe, i.e., the Friedmann universe with anomalous solid angle. The asymptotically proper Friedmann solution is possible only if the universe is accelerated or the potential is negative. If the potential is positive, the density perturbation in the asymptotically proper Friedmann solution rapidly falls off at spatial infinity, while the mass perturbation is compensated. In the asymptotically quasi-Friedmann solution, the density perturbation falls off only in proportion to the inverse square of the areal radius and the relative mass perturbation approaches a nonzero constant at spatial infinity. The present result shows that a necessary condition holds in order that a self-gravitating body grows self-similarly due to the constant accretion of quintessence in an accelerating universe.Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review D, minor correction, typos correcte

Multicenter phase II trial of preoperative chemoradiotherapy with S-1 for locally advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma

PURPOSE: We evaluated whether preoperative chemotherapy with S-1 and concurrent radiotherapy is feasible and efficacious in the treatment of advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS: Participants comprised 39 patients with oral carcinoma (stage III, n = 15; stage IVA, n = 24). All patients received a total radiation dose of 40 Gy, in once-daily 2-Gy fractions, and received S-1 at 65 mg/m(2)/day for 5 consecutive days, over 4 consecutive weeks with concurrent radiotherapy. RESULTS: Hematological toxicity was mild and reversible. The most common non-hematological toxicity was grade 3 mucositis, but this was transient and tolerable. Radical surgery was performed for 37 patients, with the remaining 2 patients declining the surgery. Postoperatively, local failure developed in 1 patient, and neck failure in 2 patients. Distant metastases were identified in 4 patients. At a median follow-up of 38.0 months (range 23–88 months), locoregional control, disease-specific survival, and overall survival rates at 3 years were 91.5, 83.8, and 83.8 %, respectively. CONCLUSION: Concurrent administration of S-1 and radiotherapy combined with surgery offers a well-tolerated method of successfully treating advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma. The locoregional control rate remains high even at 3 years of follow-up, and no serious adverse effects have been encountered

Plasma exchange (PEX) using fresh frozen plasma has considerably reduced the mortality rate in patients with immune-mediated thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (iTTP). However, some patients still do not survive even with treatment, but little information is available regarding which treatment these patients received. This study was conducted to obtain this information in 240 patients who met the current iTTP diagnostic criteria and completed at least 30 days of follow-up except for deceased cases. These patients were divided into three groups: survivors (n = 195), TTP-related deaths (n = 32), and other cause of death (n = 13). In the TTP-related death group, 26 of 32 patients experienced sudden death, mostly following radical hypotension and bradycardia. The median follow-up time after admission was 5.0 days, and the median number of PEX sessions was 2.5. Nine patients underwent autopsy and had cardiac microvascular thrombi in arterioles. Levels of lactate dehydrogenase, total bilirubin, serum creatinine, and D-dimer were significantly higher in the TTP-related death group than in the survivors group. Frequent PEX (> 20 sessions) was not associated with TTP-related death. In the acute phase of iTTP, patients with substantial organ damage caused by microthrombi have a greater mortality risk, even after just a few PEX sessions.博士(医学)・乙第1518号・令和3年12月21日© Japanese Society of Hematology 2021.The version of record of this article, first published in International journal of hematology, is available online at Publisher’s website: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12185-021-03197-5.

A Case of Basal Cell Adenoma of the Upper Lip

Basal cell adenoma is a rare type of benign salivary gland tumor found most commonly in the parotid gland. We present a rare case of basal cell adenoma arising in the minor salivary gland of the upper lip. The patient was a 59-year-old Japanese man who visited our department in December 2012 with a chief complaint of a mass in the upper lip, which had increased in size over several years. A mobile, elastic, and relatively soft mass without tenderness was palpable in the upper lip region. The mucosa of the upper lip covering the mass was normal. Tumor extirpation was performed under local anesthesia. Histologically, the tumor had a capsule and was composed of islands of relatively uniform, monotonous cells. Immunohistochemically, the inner tumor comprised tubuloductal structures that showed strong staining for CK7, while the outer tumor showed weak staining for CK7. The outer tumor cells also stained positively for CD10 and p63. The MIB-1 (Ki-67) labeling index was extremely low. Basal cell adenoma was diagnosed based on these results. The postoperative course was uneventful 12 months after surgery and there has been no recurrence

Synthesis and Magnetic Properties of Fergusonite Structured La(NbVMn)O4

The authors have synthesized fergusonite-structured La(Nb0·71V0·04Mn0·25)O4 samples. The samples, consisting of La3+, Nb5+, V5+, Mn4+ and oxygen ions, demonstrated temperature-dependent magnetization that increased with lowering the temperature below ≈200 K, and almost saturated below ≈100 K. At 75 K, the field-dependent magnetization demonstrated sigmoidal curve and reached 3 μB/Mn at 1 T. Such a magnetic behavior can be ascribed to exchange interaction between Mn4+Nb2O11 nanoclusters. The Mn4+ substitution for the V5+ sites of the crystal resulted also in the occupied state above the valence band maximum
