In cell cultures of Detroit 6, KB, and HeLa cells, treatment with certain amounts of 5-Fluorouracil resulted in the appearance of a strikingly distinct halo or chromophobic area, entirely encircling the compacted or contracted nucleoli, before the ultimate disintegration of the cells.</p

Hip Function Was Not Associated with the Incidence of Preoperative Deep Vein Thrombosis in Patients Undergoing Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty

The prevalence of preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) has been reported to be relatively high in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty. We investigated the prevalence of DVT, the association between hip function and preoperative DVT, and the effect of a history of surgery in patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty. We retrospectively analyzed the cases of the patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty between April 2013 and February 2020 at our institution. We evaluated the prevalence of preoperative DVT based on the results of the patients’ ultrasound screening. We performed univariate and multivariate analyses to investigate the association between the incidence of DVT and patient factors including age, sex, hip function, medical histories, and American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status classification. We analyzed 451 patients (494 hips). The prevalence of DVT was 14.2% (64 patients). The multivariate analysis demonstrated that increased age was an independent significant risk factor for DVT. The prevalence of preoperative DVT was relatively high among patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty. Preoperative DVT tended to be more prevalent in older patients. Hip function was not associated with the incidence of DVT

    12 WQ-switched Er:ZBLAN fiber laser at 28 μm

A diode-pumped, actively Q-switched 2.8 μm fiber laser oscillator with an average output power of more than 12 W has been realized through the use of a 35 μm core erbium-doped ZBLAN fiber and an acousto-optic modulator; to our knowledge, this is the first 3 μm pulsed fiber laser in the 10 W class. Pulse energy up to 100 μJ and pulse duration down to 90 ns, corresponding to a peak power of 0.9 kW, were achieved at a repetition rate of 120 kHz

    Stable 10 W Er:ZBLAN fiber laser operating at 271–288μm

We have developed a diode-pumped tunable 3μm fiber laser with a cw output power of the order of 10W with the use of an erbium-doped ZBLAN fiber. A tunability range of 110nm (2770 to 2880nm) with an output power between 8 and 11W was demonstrated. As the pump power was increased, the center of the wavelength range was shifted toward longer wavelengths, but the width of the wavelength range was largely unaffected. The total tunability range for various pump power levels was 170nm (2710 to 2880nm). To our knowledge, this is the highest performance (output power and tunability) obtained from a tunable 3μm fiber laser
