The Journey from Data to Qualitative Inductive Paper: Who Helps and How?

    Get PDF
How do qualitative inductive researchers move from raw data to publishable paper? Existing scholarly resources focus on how to analyze data more deeply and write it up to make a compelling contribution. Much less discussed but also critical is how researchers enlist others in the journey from data to paper – even when they are single authors of their work. Our chapter uncovers qualitative researchers’ helpers and the types of help they provide. Drawing on data from detailed accounts of single authored qualitative, inductive studies, we explain the role of qualitative and quantitative scholars, peers and hired professionals, field informants and journal editors. We talk about help with theorizing, paper structure, emotional support, efficiency enhancement, and process guidance, and we offer practical tips for seeking these different forms of help throughout the research journey

Teen Sexuality and Pregnancy in Nevada

We begin this report by examining recent data regarding the national and Nevada specific trends in teen sexuality and pregnancy and discuss the socioeconomic determinants and disparities in teen pregnancy. Next, we focus on the national and local policies and programs designed to reduce teen pregnancy and to promote health equity among teenage youth. We conclude with a survey of programs that provide housing, case management, mental health services, life skills, career counseling and teen parenting education in Las Vegas and in Henderson, NV. Appendix provides information about local and national community resources that readers can use to further their understanding of the issues raised in this chapter and learn more about the best practices designed to prevent teen pregnancies

Hedonic and Transcendent Conceptions of Value

    Get PDF
In this paper we introduce a conceptual distinction between a hedonic and transcendent conception of value. We posit three linguistic earmarks by which one can distinguish these conceptions of value. We seek validation for the conceptual distinctions by examining the language contained in reviews of cars and reviews of paintings. In undertaking the empirical examination, we draw on the work of M.A.K. Halliday to identify clauses as fundamental units of meaning and to specify process types that can be mapped onto theoretical distinctions between the two conceptions of value. Extensions of this research are discussed

    Revisiting the Meaning of Leadership

    Get PDF
During the past fifty years, organizational scholarship on leadership has shifted from a focus on the significance of leadership for meaning-making to the significance of leadership for economic performance. This shift has been problematic for two reasons. First, it has given rise to numerous conceptual difficulties that now plague the study of leadership. Second, there is now comparatively little attention to the question of how individuals find meaning in the economic sphere even though this question should arguably be one of the most important questions for organizational scholarship. This chapter discusses several reasons for the shift, arguing that one of the most important has been the lack of a clear definition and operationalization of meaningful economic activity. As a first step to redressing this shift, we offer a definition and operationalization of meaningful action, and we propose a typology of executive behaviors as a foundation for a systematic exploration of the meaning-making capacity of leaders. We conclude with a discussion of the relationship between the capacity of leaders to infuse meaning and the capacity of leaders to impact on performance
