A tidally interacting disk in the young triple system WL 20?

We present high-resolution λ = 2.7 mm imaging of the close triple pre-main-sequence system WL 20. Compact dust emission with integrated flux density of 12.9 ± 1.3 mJy is associated with two components of the triple system, WL 20W and WL 20S. No emission above a 3 σ level of 3.9 mJy is detected toward the third component, WL 20E, which lies 3."17 (400 AU) due east in projection from its neighbors. A possibly warped structure of ~0.1 M_☉ and ≤3."2 extent encompasses WL 20W and WL 20S, which have a projected separation of 2."25 (~280 AU) along a north-south axis. This structure is most likely a tidally disrupted disk surrounding WL 20S. New near-infrared spectra of the individual components show a remarkable similarity between the two T Tauri stars of the system: WL 20E has a K7 spectral type (T_eff = 4040 K) with r_K = 0.2, and WL 20W has an M0 spectral type (T_eff = 3800 K) with r_K = 0.2. The spectrum of WL 20S is consistent with that of a source intrinsically similar to WL 20W, with r_K < 0.9, but seen through an A_V = 25 in addition to the A_V = 16.3 to the system as a whole. Taken together, these millimeter and infrared data help explain the peculiar nature of the infrared companion, WL 20S, as resulting from a large enhancement in its dusty, circumstellar environment in relation to its companions

Instructional differentiation in general education and the gifted resource room: Teacher and student perceptions

This study compared the perceptions of three groups concerning differentiated educational opportunities provided for students with gifts and talents. The perceptions of general education teachers, gifted resource room teachers, and students with gifts and talents were collected using a questionnaire that encompassed questions focused on cognitive, interpersonal, and intrapersonal skill development; Results indicated that gifted resource room teachers and general education classroom teachers perceived that they provided differentiated instruction more often in the cognitive and interpersonal domains than in the intrapersonal domain. The most frequent differentiated instructional practices used by teachers (general education and gifted resource room) were in the cognitive domain. The perceptions reported by the general education teachers indicated that they provided differentiated instruction less often when compared to the perceptions of the gifted resource room teachers. The general education teachers also reported that they provided more differentiated instruction in the cognitive domain rather than in the interpersonal domain, while the gifted resource room teachers reported more differentiation in the interpersonal domain. From the questionnaire data, it appears that third, fourth, and fifth grade general education classroom teachers as well as gifted resource room teachers perceive that they make only minor modifications to their curriculum to meet the needs of gifted students; The perceptions of the students with gifts and talents indicated that they perceived the gifted resource room teachers focused on the cognitive, interpersonal, and intrapersonal domains more often than did the general education teachers in their classroom instruction. It appears the students perceived that the gifted resource room provided a more challenging educational environment in the interpersonal and intrapersonal domains than the general education classroom

Technology, Trust, and the Flow of Quality Information: A Grounded Theory Study of Decision-Making Among K-12 Education Leaders in New York State

This qualitative study utilizing the grounded theory methodology examined the lived experiences of education leaders in New York State regarding decision-making in light of the extreme variability in the flow and quality of online information. Study findings indicated that the leaders’ strong desire to avoid misinformation, combined with the strong tendency to rely on social influence exerted within local and regional peer groups, ultimately limited the amount of interaction or reliance upon online sources for decision-making. Study participants indicated they relied heavily on trusted advisors and peer groups in the same geographic area for professional advice and as a decision-making sounding board. An emerging theoretical framework, the transput lens for education leadership decision-making, was created to provide an approach to understanding ways K-12 education leaders interface with information in decision-making in the face of copious amounts of information, social influence, and both human and technological biases inherent in everyday interactions and platforms. The preliminary theory of a transput leadership paradigm illuminates the concurrency of communication inputs/outputs required of a leader making decisions in the fast-paced environment of the digital age. Recommendations included further research on the cognitive strategies of disconfirmation, and utilizing quantitative research with an expanded sample population. Further recommendations included expanding professional networks beyond the local level to increase opportunities for diversity of thought, and modeling of digital citizenship behaviors proactively for school and community stakeholders

The Association between US Adolescents’ Weight Status, Weight Perception, Weight Satisfaction, and Their Physical Activity and Dietary Behaviors

Background: It remain unclear that the association between weight status, weight perception, weight satisfaction and the clustering of physical activity (PA) and dietary behaviors in adolescents. Method: A cross-sectional analysis of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Patterns Equivalents 2007–2014 data from adolescents aged 12–17 years (n = 2965) was conducted. Multivariable logistic regression models adjusted for demographic characteristics examined the association between weight status, weight perception, weight satisfaction, and the four created lifestyle groups (healthier behaviors, healthier diet only, physically active only, unhealthier behaviors). Results: Males with obesity were more likely to be in the healthier diet only group than males with a normal weight (OR = 1.90, 95% CI: 1.02, 3.52). Similar patterns were found in males who perceived themselves as being overweight or having obesity (OR = 2.09, 95% CI: 1.09, 3.99) and males with obesity who perceived their weight status accurately (OR = 2.33, 95% CI: 1.12, 4.88). Female respondents who were satisfied with their weight were 59% less likely to be in the healthier diet only group than healthier behaviors group compared with females who were weight dissatisfied (OR = 0.41, 95% CI: 0.23, 0.75). This pattern was not observed in males. Conclusions: Clustering PA and dietary behaviors were associated with weight status and weight perception for males but not females. Weight satisfaction was associated with clustered PA and dietary behaviors for females. These findings are important for obesity prevention policies and programs to better address adolescents’ obesity and reduce health disparities in this population

Merkel Cell Tumor of the Thigh

This case of a Merkel cell carcinoma is unusual due to the occurrence of the tumor on the thigh; most Merkel cell tumors have been found on the sun-exposed region of the head and neck. Histologically, the nodule was composed of sheets of uniform, poorly differentiated cells with a high nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio. Electron miscroscopy revealed perinuclear filaments, scattered dense core granules, and complex, interdigitating processes within cytoplasmic membranes. Treatment consisted of surgical excision of the tumor with a wide margin.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/72478/1/j.1524-4725.1988.tb03374.x.pd
