“El instrumento para ver” o tlachieloni
In the pictographic manuscripts and in the descriptions made by Bernardino de Sahagún and Diego Durán in particular, a body of Aztec gods is endowed with numerous attributes. This article examines an object held by certain deities, the tlachieloni, depicted by the chroniclers as “the instrument to see”. It suggests that this attribute must be considered as an element destined to be Interpreted and “activated” during certain war-related ritual occasions, thus appointing the function of the deities who elevate it at the rites in order to succeed in warfare. En los manuscritos pictográficos y las descripciones hechas en particular por Bernardino de SahagĂşn y Diego Durán, el cuerpo de los dioses mexicas está cubierto de numerosos atributos. Este artĂculo examina un objeto asido de la mano por ciertas deidades, el tlachieloni, descrito por los cronistas como “el instrumento para ver”. Se propone demostrar que este atributo debe considerarse como un elemento destinado a ser interpretado y “activado” durante ciertos momentos rituales particulares relacionados con la guerra, señalando asĂ la funciĂłn de las deidades que lo alzan durante los rituales para obtener Ă©xito en la acciĂłn bĂ©lica.In the pictographic manuscripts and in the descriptions made by Bernardino de SahagĂşn and Diego Durán in particular, a body of Aztec gods is endowed with numerous attributes.
