[Abstract] Context Natal dispersal critically influences eco-evolutionary dynamics and the persistence of spatially structured populations. As both short- and long-distance movements contribute to population persistence in fragmented landscapes, understanding dispersal requires assessing phenotypic and environmental effects on a wide range of distances. Objectives To assess phenotypic and environmental correlates of dispersal movements in fragmented landscapes. Methods We radio-tracked juvenile middle spotted woodpeckers in fragmented landscapes to assess phenotypic and environmental effects on emigration age, transfer duration (in days), and transfer distances. Results Large fledglings and those in good condition emigrated earlier than smaller individuals and those in worse condition. Birds in better condition also reduced transfer duration. Overall, females dispersed earlier, remained shorter at transfer and moved further than males. However, while females increased transfer distances with increasing connectivity, males increased distances with decreasing connectivity. Emigration age increased with decreasing patch size and increasing patch quality, and with decreasing population density in patches with soft edges. Both transfer duration and distance increased with decreasing population density. Conclusions The correlations between phenotypic traits of fledglings and their posterior movements suggest that early-life conditions influenced dispersal through carry-over effects. Early emigration from low-quality and high-populated patches can be a behavioural mechanism to quickly escape adverse natal conditions, but population density effects were modulated by edge hardness. Finally, because reductions in connectivity led to similar transfer distances between sexes through a reduction in female distances, a lack of sex-biased dispersal can be a previously overlooked effect of habitat isolation that may alter eco-evolutionary dynamics.Open access funding provided by Swiss Ornithological Institute. Fractional transformation-based decentralized robust control of a coupled-tank system for industrial applications

    Get PDF
Petrochemical and dairy industries, waste management, and paper manufacturing fall under the category of process industries where flow and liquid control are essential. Even when liquids are mixed or chemically treated in interconnected tanks, the fluid and flow should constantly be observed and controlled, especially when dealing with nonlinearity and imperfect plant models. In this study, we propose a nonlinear dynamic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) plant model. This model is then transformed through linearization, a technique frequently utilized in the analysis and modeling of fractional processes, and decoupling for decentralized fixed-structure H-infinity robust control design. Simulation tests based on MATLAB and SIMULINK are subsequently executed. Numerous assessments are conducted to evaluate tracking performance, external disturbance re jection, and plant parameter fluctuations to gauge the effectiveness of the proposed model. The objective of this work is to provide a framework that anticipates potential outcomes, paving the way for implementing a reliable controller synthesis for MIMO-connected tanks in real-world scenarios. This research was partially funded by FONDECYT grant number 1200525 (V.L.) from the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID) of the Chilean government under the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation; and by Portuguese funds through the CMAT—Research Centre of Mathematics of University of Minho—within projects UIDB/00013/2020 and UIDP/00013/2020 (C.C.)

Distribution of transmitted charge through a double-barrier junction

The distribution function of transmitted charge through a double-barrier junction is studied at zero temperature and at small applied voltage. Both a semiclassical model, in which the transport is described by jump rates, and a quantum mechanical model, which averages over resonant and non-resonant states, are used to determine the characteristic function of the transmitted electrons. It is demonstrated that for large times the logarithm of the characteristic function is equal within the two approaches. The charge distribution is in between a Gaussian and a Poissonian distribution if both barriers have equal height and reduces to a Poissonian if one barrier is much higher than the other.Comment: 6 pages, revtex, 2 figures include

    Shot noise in mesoscopic systems

    Get PDF
This is a review of shot noise, the time-dependent fluctuations in the electrical current due to the discreteness of the electron charge, in small conductors. The shot-noise power can be smaller than that of a Poisson process as a result of correlations in the electron transmission imposed by the Pauli principle. This suppression takes on simple universal values in a symmetric double-barrier junction (suppression factor 1/2), a disordered metal (factor 1/3), and a chaotic cavity (factor 1/4). Loss of phase coherence has no effect on this shot-noise suppression, while thermalization of the electrons due to electron-electron scattering increases the shot noise slightly. Sub-Poissonian shot noise has been observed experimentally. So far unobserved phenomena involve the interplay of shot noise with the Aharonov-Bohm effect, Andreev reflection, and the fractional quantum Hall effect.Comment: 37 pages, Latex, 10 figures (eps). Global population genetic structure and demographic trajectories of the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens

Background The black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) is the most promising insect candidate for nutrient-recycling through bioconversion of organic waste into biomass, thereby improving sustainability of protein supplies for animal feed and facilitating transition to a circular economy. Contrary to conventional livestock, genetic resources of farmed insects remain poorly characterised. We present the first comprehensive population genetic characterisation of H. illucens. Based on 15 novel microsatellite markers, we genotyped and analysed 2862 individuals from 150 wild and captive populations originating from 57 countries on seven subcontinents. Results We identified 16 well-distinguished genetic clusters indicating substantial global population structure. The data revealed genetic hotspots in central South America and successive northwards range expansions within the indigenous ranges of the Americas. Colonisations and naturalisations of largely unique genetic profiles occurred on all non-native continents, either preceded by demographically independent founder events from various single sources or involving admixture scenarios. A decisive primarily admixed Polynesian bridgehead population serially colonised the entire Australasian region and its secondarily admixed descendants successively mediated invasions into Africa and Europe. Conversely, captive populations from several continents traced back to a single North American origin and exhibit considerably reduced genetic diversity, although some farmed strains carry distinct genetic signatures. We highlight genetic footprints characteristic of progressing domestication due to increasing socio-economic importance of H. illucens, and ongoing introgression between domesticated strains globally traded for large-scale farming and wild populations in some regions. Conclusions We document the dynamic population genetic history of a cosmopolitan dipteran of South American origin shaped by striking geographic patterns. These reflect both ancient dispersal routes, and stochastic and heterogeneous anthropogenic introductions during the last century leading to pronounced diversification of worldwide structure of H. illucens. Upon the recent advent of its agronomic commercialisation, however, current human-mediated translocations of the black soldier fly largely involve genetically highly uniform domesticated strains, which meanwhile threaten the genetic integrity of differentiated unique local resources through introgression. Our in-depth reconstruction of the contemporary and historical demographic trajectories of H. illucens emphasises benchmarking potential for applied future research on this emerging model of the prospering insect-livestock sector.Peer reviewe

New approaches to measuring anthelminthic drug efficacy: parasitological responses of childhood schistosome infections to treatment with praziquantel

    Get PDF
By 2020, the global health community aims to control and eliminate human helminthiases, including schistosomiasis in selected African countries, principally by preventive chemotherapy (PCT) through mass drug administration (MDA) of anthelminthics. Quantitative monitoring of anthelminthic responses is crucial for promptly detecting changes in efficacy, potentially indicative of emerging drug resistance. Statistical models offer a powerful means to delineate and compare efficacy among individuals, among groups of individuals and among populations.; We illustrate a variety of statistical frameworks that offer different levels of inference by analysing data from nine previous studies on egg counts collected from African children before and after administration of praziquantel.; We quantify responses to praziquantel as egg reduction rates (ERRs), using different frameworks to estimate ERRs among population strata, as average responses, and within strata, as individual responses. We compare our model-based average ERRs to corresponding model-free estimates, using as reference the World Health Organization (WHO) 90 % threshold of optimal efficacy. We estimate distributions of individual responses and summarize the variation among these responses as the fraction of ERRs falling below the WHO threshold.; Generic models for evaluating responses to anthelminthics deepen our understanding of variation among populations, sub-populations and individuals. We discuss the future application of statistical modelling approaches for monitoring and evaluation of PCT programmes targeting human helminthiases in the context of the WHO 2020 control and elimination goals

Mass predictions based on a supersymmetric SU(5) fixed point

I examine the possibility that the third generation fermion masses are determined by an exact fixed point of the minimal supersymmetric SU(5) model. When one-loop supersymmetric thresholds are included, this unified fixed point successfully predicts the top quark mass, 175 +(-) 2 GeV, as well as the weak mixing angle. The bottom quark mass prediction is sensitive to the supersymmetric thresholds; it approaches the measured value for mu <0 and very large unified gaugino mass. The experimental measurement of the tau lepton mass determines tan(beta), and the strong gauge coupling and fine structure constant fix the unification scale and the unified gauge coupling.Comment: 40 pages, 9 figures, 9 tables, Revtex

Neutrino Anomalies in Gauge Mediated Model with Trilinear R violation

    Get PDF
The structure of neutrino masses and mixing resulting from trilinear RR violating interactions is studied in the presence of the gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking. Neutrino masses arise in this model at tree level through the RG-induced vacuum expectation values of the sneutrinos and also through direct contribution at 1-loop. The relative importance of these contributions is determined by the values of the strong and weak coupling constants. In case of purely λ\lambda' couplings, the tree contribution dominates over the 1-loop diagram. In this case, one simultaneously obtains atmospheric neutrino oscillations and quasi-vacuum oscillations of the solar neutrinos if all the \l' couplings are assumed to be of similar magnitudes. If R parity violation arises from the trilinear \l couplings, then the loop induced contribution dominates over the tree level. One cannot simultaneously explain the solar and atmospheric deficit in this case if all the \l couplings are of similar magnitude. This however becomes possible with hierarchical \l and we give a specific example of this.Comment: 26 pages Latex, 2 figures, certain sections rewritten, improved discussion about derivations added. Higgs Boson Decay into Hadronic Jets

The remarkable agreement of electroweak data with standard model (SM) predictions motivates the study of extensions of the SM in which the Higgs boson is light and couples in a standard way to the weak gauge bosons. Postulated new light particles should have small couplings to the gauge bosons. Within this context it is natural to assume that the branching fractions of the light SM-like Higgs boson mimic those in the standard model. This assumption may be unwarranted, however, if there are non-standard light particles coupled weakly to the gauge bosons but strongly to the Higgs field. In particular, the Higgs boson may effectively decay into hadronic jets, possibly without important bottom or charm flavor content. As an example, we present a simple extension of the SM, in which the predominant decay of the Higgs boson occurs into a pair of light bottom squarks that, in turn, manifest themselves as hadronic jets. Discovery of the Higgs boson remains possible at an electron-positron linear collider, but prospects at hadron colliders are diminished substantially.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figure
