Structural pattern of the western Las Cañadas caldera (Tenerife, Canary Islands) revealed by audiomagnetotellurics

    Get PDF
The local and regional structural pattern of volcanic edifices strongly controls the space distribution of electrical resistivity. Here we report on the structural context of the western part of the Las Cañadas caldera of Tenerife (LCC) thought to have initiated the formation of the caldera. Using a new dataset of 11 audiomagnetotelluric tensors we emphasize the resistivity distribution of Ucanca caldera and propose a major revision of its extension. We find that Ucanca caldera has a limited westwards extent and that El Cedro sector is a depression margin of the caldera. According to the extent of hydrothermalized rocks at the base of the LCC wall and the distribution of Pico Teide - Pico Viejo vents, we constrain the location and size of Ucanca caldera. The interpretation of these results also constrains the extension of the Icod Valley and proposes a headwall located below the Pico Teide - Pico Viejo Comple

The present paper has a double objective. First, to evaluate the importance of geopolitical concepts for the understanding of Brazil’s current political conjuncture, and secondly to identify the influence of Friederich Ratzel’s thinking (1844-1904) on two contemporary conceptions that seek to renew Brazilian geopolitics. In the development of the text, it is pointed out that the Ratzelian concepts of “Space” and “Position” are present both in the conceptions of André Roberto Martin and of Samuel Pinheiro Guimarães, thus connecting them to geopolitical realism. In addition, it was possible to verify that another pivotal idea of Ratzel, also present among Brazilian thinkers, is the understanding that the technical domain of the environment is a crucial element in the separation between the “subject states” and the “object states” in the history of the international arena.O trabalho tem um duplo objetivo.

Innocent strategies as presheaves and interactive equivalences for CCS

    Get PDF
Seeking a general framework for reasoning about and comparing programming languages, we derive a new view of Milner's CCS. We construct a category E of plays, and a subcategory V of views. We argue that presheaves on V adequately represent innocent strategies, in the sense of game semantics. We then equip innocent strategies with a simple notion of interaction. This results in an interpretation of CCS. Based on this, we propose a notion of interactive equivalence for innocent strategies, which is close in spirit to Beffara's interpretation of testing equivalences in concurrency theory. In this framework we prove that the analogues of fair and must testing equivalences coincide, while they differ in the standard setting.Comment: In Proceedings ICE 2011, arXiv:1108.014

The Program for Biodiversity Research in Brazil: The role of regional networks for biodiversity knowledge, dissemination, and conservation

    Get PDF
The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes

Outflows in the narrow-line region of bright Seyfert galaxies : I. GMOS-IFU data

    Get PDF
We present two-dimensional maps of emission-line fluxes and kinematics, as well as of the stellar kinematics of the central few kpc of five bright nearby Seyfert galaxies –Mrk 6, Mrk 79, Mrk 348, Mrk 607, and Mrk 1058 – obtained from observations with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph Integral Field Unit on the Gemini North Telescope. The data cover the inner 3.5 arcsec×5.0 arcsec – corresponding to physical scales in the range 0.6×0.9–1.5×2.2 kpc2 – at a spatial resolution ranging from 110 to 280 pc with a spectral coverage of 4300–7100Å and velocity resolution of ≈90 km s−1. The gas excitation is Seyfert like everywhere but show excitation gradients that are correlated with the gas kinematics, reddening and/or the gas density. The gas kinematics show in all cases two components: a rotation one similar to that observed in the stellar velocity field, and an outflow component. In the case of Mrk607, the gas is counter-rotating relative to the stars. Enhanced gas velocity dispersion is observed in association with the outflows according to two patterns: at the locations of the highest outflow velocities along the ionization axis or perpendicularly to it in a strip centred at the nucleus that we attribute to an equatorial outflow. Bipolar outflows are observed in Mrk 348 and Mrk 79, while in Mrk 1058 only the blueshifted part is clearly observed, while in cases of Mrk 6 and Mrk 607, the geometry of the outflow needs further constraints from modelling to be presented in a forthcoming study, where the mass flow rate and powers will also be obtained

The present project of design and implementation of a mobile application to expose and disseminate artistic and personalized works with specific requirements, based on the various investigations carried out in Peru of the public in the age range of 20 to 45 years that show interest and passion. for art and artistic expressions, which made it possible to identify the needs of the artists and the user to quickly locate a medium through which a person can publish their worked works in a safe way so that in this way it is seen and disseminated for the users. users interested in acquiring a particular product, facing a market with deficiencies related to supporting Peruvian artists. Likewise, the need for artists to find a medium or platform where communication and interaction with users can be facilitated immediately was identified, causing problems in retaining a client due to the lack of a digital tool. Additionally, it was observed that most of the users had the need to establish precise and direct communication with various artists through a means to facilitate the interaction of creating a personalized work with the details established safely by the individual. Finally, a great significant growth was found in the acquisition of smart cell phones and in the download and use of various mobile applications for the delivery of articles, there being no application aimed at allowing many Peruvian artists to publish their works, where the user to interact with each one of them directly for their sale and in the communication and creation of a personalized product for the client in a safe and agile way. In order to meet the aforementioned market demand, the Artes Ya project was established and developed, a mobile application that facilitates contact between artist and user, which offers the service that a Peruvian artist can present, disseminate and quote their works through this medium, so that in this way it can be seen and recognized by all users interested in art, generating great opportunities and long-term economic stability for the artist. In addition, the application facilitates interaction and secure communication directly with each of the artists for a recommendation, question or establish a new personalized design with the artist indicating their requirements, generating an interactive and friendly mobile application for the public. To mark the implementation of the project, an investigation and analysis of the consumer, competitors and various external factors was carried out. Also, the following plans were developed: Marketing plan, financial plan, Strategic plan and the operations plan, by which they have essential planning and strategies for the viability of this project.Trabajo de investigació

An outflow in the Seyfert ESO 362-G18 revealed by Gemini-GMOS/IFU observations

We present two-dimensional stellar and gaseous kinematics of the inner 0.7 × 1.2 kpc2 of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy ESO 362-G18, derived from optical (4092–7338 Å) spectra obtained with the GMOS integral field spectrograph on the Gemini South telescope at a spatial resolution of ≈170 pc and spectral resolution of 36 km s-¹. ESO 362-G18 is a strongly perturbed galaxy of morphological type Sa or S0/a, with a minor merger approaching along the NE direction. Previous studies have shown that the [O III] emission shows a fan-shaped extension of ≈10′′ to the SE. We detect the [O III] doublet, [N II] and Hα emission lines throughout our field of view. The stellar kinematics is dominated by circular motions in the galaxy plane, with a kinematic position angle of ≈137° and is centred approximately on the continuum peak. The gas kinematics is also dominated by rotation, with kinematic position angles ranging from 122° to 139°, projected velocity amplitudes of the order of 100 km s-¹, and a mean velocity dispersion of 100 km s-¹. A double-Gaussian fit to the [O III]λ5007 and Hα lines, which have the highest signal to noise ratios of the emission lines, reveal two kinematic components: (1) a component at lower radial velocities which we interpret as gas rotating in the galactic disk; and (2) a component with line of sight velocities 100–250 km s-¹ higher than the systemic velocity, interpreted as originating in the outflowing gas within the AGN ionization cone. We estimate a mass outflow rate of 7.4 × 10-² M⊙yr-¹ in the SE ionization cone (this rate doubles if we assume a biconical configuration), and a mass accretion rate on the supermassive black hole (SMBH) of 2.2 × 10−2 M⊙ yr−1. The total ionized gas mass within ~84 pc of the nucleus is 3.3 × 105 M⊙; infall velocities of ~34 km s−1 in this gas would be required to feed both the outflow and SMBH accretion
