    Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn Sum Rule and the Discrepancy between the New CLAS and SAPHIR Data

    Contribution of the K^+\Lambda channel to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule has been calculated by using the models that fit the recent SAPHIR or CLAS differential cross section data. It is shown that the two data sets yield quite different contributions. Contribution of this channel to the forward spin polarizability of the proton has been also calculated. It is also shown that the inclusion of the recent CLAS C_x and C_z data in the fitting data base does not significantly change the result of the present calculation. Results of the fit, however, reveal the role of the S_{11}(1650), P_{11}(1710), P_{13}(1720), and P_{13}(1900) resonances for the description of the C_x and C_z data. A brief discussion on the importance of these resonances is given. Measurements of the polarized total cross section \sigma_{TT'} by the CLAS, LEPS, and MAMI collaborations are expected to verify this finding.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure

    Gauge-invariant tree-level photoproduction amplitudes with form factors

    We show how the gauge-invariance formulation given by Haberzettl is implemented in practice for photoproduction amplitudes at the tree level with form factors describing composite nucleons. We demonstrate that, in contrast to Ohta's gauge-invariance prescription, this formalism allows electric current contributions to be multiplied by a form factor, i.e., it does not require that they be treated like bare currents. While different in detail, this nevertheless lends support to previous ad hoc approaches which multiply the Born amplitudes by an overall form factor. Numerical results for kaon photoproduction off the nucleon are given. They show that the gauge procedure by Haberzettl leads to much improved χ2\chi^2 values as compared to Ohta's prescription.Comment: 5 pages, RevTeX, two eps figure

    Inclusive K+K^+ and exclusive K+YK^+Y photoproduction on the deuteron: Λ\Lambda- and Σ\Sigma-threshold phenomena

    Inclusive K+K^+ and exclusive K+YK^+Y photoproduction on the deuteron are investigated theoretically. Modern hyperon-nucleon forces and a recently updated kaon photoproduction operator for the γ+NK++Y\gamma +N\to K^++Y process are used. Sizable effects of the hyperon-nucleon final state interaction are found near the K+ΛNK^+\Lambda N and K+ΣNK^+\Sigma N thresholds in the inclusive reaction. Angular distributions for the exclusive process show clear YNYN final state interaction effects in certain kinematic regions. Precise data especially for the inclusive process around the K+ΣNK^+\Sigma N threshold would help to clarify the strength and property of the ΛNΣN\Lambda N-\Sigma N interaction.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figure

    Can we extract the pion electromagnetic form factor from a t-channel diagram only?

    We show that we are able to extract the pion electromagnetic form factor by using the recent charged pion electroproduction data from JLab and a simple t-channel diagram. For this purpose we have performed the Q2-independent and dependent analyses. The result of the first analysis is in good agreement with those of previous works and fit the Maris and Tandy model as well as the monopole parameterization which describes a pion radius of 0.672 fm. The result of the second analysis corroborates the findings in the first analysis. Our findings therefore provide a direct proof that at the given kinematics the t-channel diagram really dominates the process. This could also set a new constraint to the phenomenological models that try to describe the process.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

    The Kaon-Photoproduction Of Nucleons In The Quark Model

    In this paper, we develop a general framework to study the meson-photoproductions of nucleons in the chiral quark model. The S and U channel resonance contributions are expressed in terms of the Chew-Goldberger-Low-Nambu (CGLN) amplitudes. The kaon-photoproduction processes, γpK+Λ\gamma p\to K^+ \Lambda, γpK+Σ0\gamma p\to K^+ \Sigma^0, and γpK0Σ+\gamma p\to K^0\Sigma^+, are calculated. The initial results show that the quark model provides a much improved description of the reaction mechanism for the kaon-photoproductions of the nucleon with less parameters than the traditional phenomenological approaches.Comment: 25 pages, 9 postscript figures can be obtained from the author

    Evolutionary consequences of fishing and their implications for salmon

    We review the evidence for fisheries-induced evolution in anadromous salmonids. Salmon are exposed to a variety of fishing gears and intensities as immature or maturing individuals. We evaluate the evidence that fishing is causing evolutionary changes to traits including body size, migration timing and age of maturation, and we discuss the implications for fisheries and conservation. Few studies have fully evaluated the ingredients of fisheries-induced evolution: selection intensity, genetic variability, correlation among traits under selection, and response to selection. Most studies are limited in their ability to separate genetic responses from phenotypic plasticity, and environmental change complicates interpretation. However, strong evidence for selection intensity and for genetic variability in salmon fitness traits indicates that fishing can cause detectable evolution within ten or fewer generations. Evolutionary issues are therefore meaningful considerations in salmon fishery management. Evolutionary biologists have rarely been involved in the development of salmon fishing policy, yet evolutionary biology is relevant to the long-term success of fisheries. Future management might consider fishing policy to (i) allow experimental testing of evolutionary responses to exploitation and (ii) improve the long-term sustainability of the fishery by mitigating unfavorable evolutionary responses to fishing. We provide suggestions for how this might be done

    Measurement of the Cross Section Asymmetry of the Reaction gp-->pi0p in the Resonance Energy Region Eg = 0.5 - 1.1 GeV

    The cross section asymmetry Sigma has been measured for the photoproduction of pi0-mesons off protons, using polarized photons in the energy range Eg = 0.5 - 1.1 GeV. The CM angular coverage is Theta = 85 - 125 deg with energy and angle steps of 25 MeV and 5 deg, respectively. The obtained Sigma data, which cover the second and third resonance regions, are compared with existing experimental data and recent phenomenological analyses. The influence of these measurements on such analyses is also considered

    Exclusive Photoproduction of Large Momentum-Transfer K and K* Mesons

    The reactions gamma p -> K+ Lambda and gamma p -> K* Lambda are analyzed within perturbative QCD, allowing for diquarks as quasi-elementary constituents of baryons. The diquark-model parameters and the quark-diquark distribution amplitudes of proton and Lambda are taken from previous investigations of electromagnetic baryon form factors and Compton-scattering off protons. Unpolarized differential cross sections and polarization observables are computed for different choices of the K and K* distribution amplitudes. The asymptotic form of the K distribution amplitude (proportional to x1 x2) is found to provide a satisfactory description of the K photoproduction data.Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures available as tared, compressed and uuencoded PS-file
