Probabilistic Guarded P Systems, A New Formal Modelling Framework

    Get PDF
Multienvironment P systems constitute a general, formal framework for modelling the dynamics of population biology, which consists of two main approaches: stochastic and probabilistic. The framework has been successfully used to model biologic systems at both micro (e.g. bacteria colony) and macro (e.g. real ecosystems) levels, respectively. In this paper, we extend the general framework in order to include a new case study related to P. Oleracea species. The extension is made by a new variant within the probabilistic approach, called Probabilistic Guarded P systems (in short, PGP systems). We provide a formal definition, a simulation algorithm to capture the dynamics, and a survey of the associated software.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2012- 37434Junta de Andalucía P08-TIC-0420

Observation and analysis of set pieces actions in professional football

    Get PDF

Medium-induced soft gluon radiation in DIS

We study color coherence effects on the medium-induced soft gluon radiation off an asymptotic quark hit by a virtual photon traversing a hot and dense QCD medium. The transverse momentum spectrum of the emitted gluon is computed at 1st order in the opacity expansion. The interference effects between the initial and final state radiation modify the soft gluon spectrum when a finite angle between the incoming and outgoing quarks is considered, presenting a soft divergence. We comment on possible implications on observables in eA collisions.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure, Proceedings of DIS 2012, Bonn, German

The present theoretical research study aims to be an easy-to-use reference tool for teachers of Portuguese as a foreign language. Part I sets out the objectives: (1) to establish the segmental phonological system of Portuguese, taking into account both the European and the Brazilian varieties of the language. (2) to carry out a contrastive analysis of the descriptions of the Spanish and the Portuguese systems, and (3) to establish the characteristics of the phonic interlanguage of Spanish-speaking learners of Portuguese. Part I also introduces the theoretical framework of contrastive linguistics, phonology acquisition and the concept of the phonic interlanguage in learners of second languages. Part II describes, from a structuralist perspective and using traditional articulatory features, the segmental phonological systems of standard Spanish and Portuguese varieties. The description of Portuguese puts forward a single system embracing both the European and the Brazilian (Carioca) varieties. Following the phonological order established for Portuguese, the articulation of the allophones corresponding to each phoneme are established and their distribution is restricted (first objective). Part III carries out a contrastive analysis of the two phonological systems described (second objective), the phonic interlanguage of adult, Spanish-speaking learners of Portuguese is characterised on the basis of transfer phenomena (third objective), the conclusions are presented and the implications of this type of research for the teaching of Portuguese as a second language, in general, and for the language training of translators and interpreters, in particular, are discussed. Some of the future lines of research arising from the thesis are also indicated

A Simulation Workflow for Membrane Computing: From MeCoSim to PMCGPU Through P-Lingua

    Get PDF
P system simulators are of high importance in Membrane Computing, since they provide tools to assist on model validation and verification. Keeping a balance between generality and flexibility, on the one side, and efficiency, on the other hand, is always challenging, but it is worth the effort. Besides, in order to prove the feasibility of P system models as practical tools for solving problems and aid in decision making, it is essential to provide functional mechanisms to have all the elements required at disposal of the potential users smoothly integrated in a robust workflow. The aim of this paper is to describe the main components and connections within the approach followed in this pipeline.

The use of non-animal alternatives in the safety evaluations of cosmetics ingredients by the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS)

    Get PDF
In Europe, the safety evaluation of cosmetics is based on the safety evaluation of each individual ingredient. Article 3 of the Cosmetics Regulation specifies that a cosmetic product made available on the market is to be safe for human health when used normally or under reasonably foreseeable conditions. For substances that cause some concern with respect to human health (e.g. colorants, preservatives, UV-filters), safety is evaluated at the Commission level by a scientific committee, presently called the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS). According to the Cosmetics Regulations, in the EU, the marketing of cosmetics products and their ingredients that have been tested on animals for most of their human health effects, including acute toxicity, is prohibited. Nevertheless, any study dating from before this prohibition took effect is accepted for the safety assessment of cosmetics ingredients. The in vitro methods reported in the dossiers summited to the SCCS are here evaluated from the published reports issued by the scientific committee of the Directorate General of Health and Consumers (DG SANCO); responsible for the safety of cosmetics ingredients. The number of studies submitted to the SCCS that do not involve animals is still low and in general the safety of cosmetics ingredients is based on in vivo studies performed before the prohibition

Comparative sensitivity of tumor and non-tumor cell lines as reliable approach for in vitro cytotoxicity screening of lysine-based surfactants with potential pharmaceutical applications

    Get PDF
Surfactants are used as additives in topical pharmaceuticals and drug delivery systems. The biocompatibility of amino acid-based surfactants makes them highly suitable for use in these fields, but tests are needed to evaluate their potential toxicity. Here we addressed the sensitivity of tumor (HeLa, MCF-7) and non-tumor (3T3, 3T6, HaCaT, NCTC 2544) cell lines to the toxic effects of lysine-based surfactants by means of two in vitro endpoints (MTT and NRU). This comparative assay may serve as a reliable approach for predictive toxicity screening of chemicals prior to pharmaceutical applications. After 24-h of cell exposure to surfactants, differing toxic responses were observed. NCTC 2544 and 3T6 cell lines were the most sensitive, while both tumor cells and 3T3 fibroblasts were more resistant to the cytotoxic effects of surfactants. IC50-values revealed that cytotoxicity was detected earlier by MTT assay than by NRU assay, regardless of the compound or cell line. The overall results showed that surfactants with organic counterions were less cytotoxic than those with inorganic counterions. Our findings highlight the relevance of the correct choice and combination of cell lines and bioassays in toxicity studies for a safe and reliable screen of chemicals with potential interest in pharmaceutical industry
