Get PDF

Self-regulation in family foster children

Get PDF
This poster presents research on foster children’s capacities for self-regulation and its relation to adversity history. Children in family foster care are a vulnerable population due to their experiences of maltreatment and separation from primary caregivers. Research has shown high rates of behavioral problems and impulsivity in these children, as well as other difficulties such as poor academic adjustment. Recent theory and research advances suggest some of these problems are due to deficits in self-regulatory capacities, such as executive functions or emotion regulation. Early adversity in key developmental stages, like that suffered by many foster children, can undermine the normative development of these capacities and, consequently, their psychosocial adjustment. This study explores this topic in a sample of foster children between 4 and 8 years old who were living in non-relative foster families for at least six months in Southern Spain. We used the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF; Gioia, Isquith, Guy, & Kenworthy, 2000), a widely used parent-reported questionnaire, to assess self-regulation in the foster children. The BRIEF was answered by the primary foster caregiver during a home visit. The information regarding adverse events and trajectory in the child protection services was obtained through case records in collaboration with caseworkers. The results of this study show us information about the capacities of self-regulation of children in family foster care. Due to the centrality of self-regulation in development and the fact that it remains responsive to well-designed interventions beyond early childhood, interventions for foster children and families should consider targeting this dimension to improve their outcomes

[Abstract] Ovarian cancer is one of the most lethal gynecological malignancies worldwide because it tends to be detected late, when the disease has already spread, and prognosis is poor. In this review we aim to highlight the importance of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in diagnosis, prognosis and treatment choice, to make progress towards increasingly personalized medicine in this malignancy. We review the effects of lncRNAs associated with ovarian cancer in the context of cancer hallmarks. We also discuss the molecular mechanisms by which lncRNAs become involved in cellular physiology; the onset, development and progression of ovarian cancer; and lncRNAs’ regulatory mechanisms at the transcriptional, post-transcriptional and post-translational stages of gene expression. Finally, we compile a series of online resources useful for the study of lncRNAs, especially in the context of ovarian cancer. Future work required in the field is also discussed along with some concluding remarks. This work was funded by Plan Estatal I + D + I by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII, Spain) under grant agreement AES number PI18/01714, cofounded by Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional-FEDER (The European Regional Development Fund-ERDF) “A way of Making Europe,” and by Xunta de Galicia (Consolidación Grupos Referencia Competitiva contract number ED431C 2016-012). New trends in nanoclay-modified sensors

Get PDF
Nanoclays are widespread materials characterized by a layered structure in the nano-scale range. They have multiple applications in diverse scientific and industrial areas, mainly due to their swelling capacity, cation exchange capacity, and plasticity. Due to the cation exchange capacity, nanoclays can serve as host matrices for the stabilization of several molecules and, thus, they can be used as sensors by incorporating electroactive ions, biomolecules as enzymes, or fluorescence probes. In this review, the most recent applications as bioanalyte sensors are addressed, focusing on two main detection systems: electrochemical and optical methods. Particularly, the application of electrochemical sensors with clay-modified electrodes (CLME) for pesticide detection is described. Moreover, recent advances of both electrochemical and optical sensors based on nanoclays for diverse bioanalytes? detection such as glucose, H2O2, organic acids, proteins, or bacteria are also discussed. As it can be seen from this review, nanoclays can become a key factor in sensors? development, creating an emerging technology for the detection of bioanalytes, with application in both environmental and biomedical fields

Get PDF

Dissociative symptoms in family foster children: [póster]

Adjustment problems and mental health of children in the child welfare system have been a concern for a long time. However, it hasn’t been until recently that researchers and practitioners have claimed a more in-depth and nuanced knowledge of mental health in this population. Different research studies have shown a relevant presence of disturbances (such as trauma-related anxiety, disinhibited social engagement or dissociative symptoms) in foster care children specifically derived from the adverse experiences they have suffered. Some children develop significant dissociative symptoms because of traumatizing, emotionally overwhelming experiences that cannot be processed (such as physical or sexual abuse) and therefore disrupt the normal integration and coherence of memory, consciousness and perception. Severe dissociation places children in a maladaptive developmental pathway and entails significant risk for later psychopathology. In this study, the presence of dissociative symptoms in a sample of foster children between 4 and 8 years old who were living in non-relative foster families for at least six months in Southern Spain was analyzed. The Child Dissociative Checklist (CDC; Putnam, Helmers, & Trickett, 1993) was used to assess dissociative symptoms, the most widely used parent-reported questionnaire for this symptomatology. The CDC was answered by the primary foster caregiver during a home visit. We obtained the information related to adverse events and trajectory in the child protection services through the case records in collaboration with caseworkers. The results of this study contribute to the knowledge of the development of dissociative symptoms in children in family foster care, particularly in those who have suffered the most severe adversity. An informed and comprehensive knowledge of the possible mental health issues in foster and maltreated children in general is essential if we want to provide tailored and effective interventions to this vulnerable population

Alcohol use and family‑related factors among Spanish university students: the unHicos project

Get PDF
Background: During adolescence and youth there are relevant changes in the consolidation, gain or loss of consumption habits and lifestyles and the family factors has a fundamental role to development these habits. The study of the consumption of toxins, such as alcohol intake, is crucial at this stage due to the repercussions that said consumption presents in adulthood. Therefore, the objective of our study was to evaluate the associations between alcohol consumption patterns and related family factors (family functioning, family history of alcohol consumption) in Spanish university students. Methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, multicenter study, carried out in first-year university students from 11 Spanish universities. Through an online questionnaire, alcohol consumption (risky consumption and intensive consumption or binge drinking), family functioning and history of alcohol in the family were evaluated. Risky alcohol consumption and binge drinking were assessed using the AUDIT test, and family functioning was assessed using the family APGAR questionnaire. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed, as well as the Chi- Square test and Student’s T-Test, and non-conditional logistic regression models were carried out to examine this association. Results: The prevalence of risky alcohol consumption identified in the 10,167 respondents was 16.9% (95% CI = 16.2–17.6), and that of BD was 48.8% (95% CI = 47.9–48.8). There is a significant association between risky alcohol consumption and family functioning in students of both sexes, with greater consumption in the face of severe dysfunctional support (men OR = 1.72; p < 0.001 and women OR = 1.74; p < 0.001) and family history of consumption (p = 0.005). Regarding the binge drinking pattern, no statistically significant differences were observed. Conclusions: Risky alcohol consumption in university students is associated with dysfunctional family support, unlike the binge drinking pattern, where there is no such association. The findings of this study show the importance of creating prevention programs focused on the family approach in university students, which include alcohol screening in the population with a family history of this substance, and greater social support from health services.National Drug Plan, Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality of Spain 2010|145 2013|034 PI16/0194

In the framework of the international project ACACIA, Empodera package, this proposal is presented that should guide the generation training of technological adaptations. The idea of achieving an education for all, makes the preparation of teachers indispensable to be able to respond with quality to the challenges demanded by inclusive education. The proposal contemplates two dimensions; the first one dedicated to the analysis of the changes that are taking place in the universities due to the entrance of populations that break with the traditional profile of the students, and leads to consider structural changes in the missionary principles as well as in the social and academic commitment. The second, in perspective of inter culturality, diversity and difference, exposes the relationship between education and technology, to situate access to information and construction of knowledge during the teaching-learning process, especially of deaf and visually impaired students, who require adaptations such as subtitling and interpretation and audio description. It is essential that HEIs advance in the consolidation of an inclusive thought that impacts the collective conscience and allows both the transformation in the academic and organizational structure and the empowerment in the generation of required adaptations, according to the condition and situation of the students, within the framework of the subject equation, context-culture.

Exploring the local environment of the engineered nanoclay Mica-4 under hydrothermal conditions using Eu3+ as a luminescent probe

High charge mica Na4Al4Si4Mg6O20F4, Mica-4, is a promising candidate as a filling material to immobilize high-level radioactive waste in deep geological repositories due to its extraordinary adsorption capacity. In contrast to traditional clay materials, the structural composition of this mica, with a high content of aluminum in the tetrahedral sheet, enhances its chemical reactivity, favoring the formation of new crystalline phases under mild hydrothermal conditions, and thus providing a definitive isolation of the radionuclides in the engineered barrier. Moreover, this synthetic clay has some features that allow its use as an optical sensor by doping with luminescent rare earth cations such as Eu3+. In this paper we discuss the local structure of the nanoclay Mica-4 using Eu3+ as a local probe to track the physical and chemical modifications under hydrothermal conditions. For that purpose, a set of hydrothermal experiments has been carried out heating Mica-4 and an aqueous Eu(NO3)3 solution in a stainless steel reactor at different temperatures and times. Optical properties of the as-treated samples were characterized by spectroscopic measurements. The fine peak structure of emission and the relative intensity of different Eu3+ transitions as well as the luminescence lifetime have been correlated with the structure and composition of this nanoclay, and the interaction mechanisms between the lanthanide ions and the clay mineral at different temperatures and times. Special attention has been paid to understanding the role of the aluminum content, which may act as either an aggregating or dispersing agent, in the optical features and reactivity of the system. We would like to thank Instituto de Investigación Marqués de Valdecilla (IDIVAL) (Projects NVAL16/17 and INNVAL19/18) and Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (Project PGC2018–101464-B-100) for financial support
