Automorphism Group of k((t))k((t)): Applications to the Bosonic String

This paper is concerned with the formulation of a non-pertubative theory of the bosonic string. We introduce a formal group GG which we propose as the ``universal moduli space'' for such a formulation. This is motivated because GG establishes a natural link between representations of the Virasoro algebra and the moduli space of curves. Among other properties of GG it is shown that a ``local'' version of the Mumford formula holds on GG.Comment: 29 page

Memory effect in triglycine sulfate induced by a transverse electric field: specific heat measurement

The influence of a transverse electric field in the specific heat of triglycine sulphate (TGS) has been studied. The specific heat of TGS has been measured heating the sample from ferroelectric to paraelectric phase after prolonged transverse electric field (i.e. perpendicular to the ferroelectric axis). It is shown that the specific heat of TGS can remember the temperature TsT_s at which the transverse field was previously applied.Comment: ReVTeX4 Twocolumn 4 pages, 4 figure

Universality Classes of Diagonal Quantum Spin Ladders

We find the classification of diagonal spin ladders depending on a characteristic integer NpN_p in terms of ferrimagnetic, gapped and critical phases. We use the finite algorithm DMRG, non-linear sigma model and bosonization techniques to prove our results. We find stoichiometric contents in cuprate CuO2CuO_2 planes that allow for the existence of weakly interacting diagonal ladders.Comment: REVTEX4 file, 3 color figures, 1 tabl

Experimental phase functions of mm-sized cosmic dust grains

We present experimental phase functions of three types of millimeter-sized dust grains consisting of enstatite, quartz and volcanic material from Mount Etna, respectively. The three grains present similar sizes but different absorbing properties. The measurements are performed at 527 nm covering the scattering angle range from 3 to 170 degrees. The measured phase functions show two well defined regions i) soft forward peaks and ii) a continuous increase with the scattering angle at side- and back-scattering regions. This behavior at side- and back-scattering regions are in agreement with the observed phase functions for the Fomalhaut and HR 4796A dust rings. Further computations and measurements (including polarization) for millimeter sized-grains are needed to draw some conclusions about the fluffy or compact structure of the dust grains

On the chemical ladder of esters. Detection and formation of ethyl formate in the W51 e2 hot molecular core

The detection of organic molecules with increasing complexity and potential biological relevance is opening the possibility to understand the formation of the building blocks of life in the interstellar medium. One of the families of molecules with astrobiological interest are the esters, whose simplest member, methyl formate, is rather abundant in star-forming regions. The next step in the chemical complexity of esters is ethyl formate, C2_2H5_5OCHO. Only two detections of this species have been reported so far, which strongly limits our understanding of how complex molecules are formed in the interstellar medium. We have searched for ethyl formate towards the W51 e2 hot molecular core, one of the most chemically rich sources in the Galaxy and one of the most promising regions to study prebiotic chemistry, especially after the recent discovery of the P−-O bond, key in the formation of DNA. We have analyzed a spectral line survey towards the W51 e2 hot molecular core, which covers 44 GHz in the 1, 2 and 3 mm bands, carried out with the IRAM 30m telescope. We report the detection of the trans and gauche conformers of ethyl formate. A Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium analysis indicates that the excitation temperature is 78±\pm10 K and that the two conformers have similar source-averaged column densities of (2.0±\pm0.3)×\times1016^{16} cm−2^{-2} and an abundance of ∼\sim10−8^{-8}. We compare the observed molecular abundances of ethyl formate with different competing chemical models based on grain surface and gas-phase chemistry. We propose that grain-surface chemistry may have a dominant role in the formation of ethyl formate (and other complex organic molecules) in hot molecular cores, rather than reactions in the gas phase.Comment: Accepted in A&A; 11 pages, 6 figures, 7 Table
