The Low Energy Tagger for the KLOE-2 experiment
The KLOE experiment at the upgraded DAFNE e+e- collider in Frascati (KLOE-2)
is going to start a new data taking at the beginning of 2010 with its detector
upgraded with a tagging system for the identification of gamma-gamma
interactions. The tagging stations for low-energy e+e- will consist in two
calorimeters The calorimeter used to detect low-energy e+e- will be placed
between the beam-pipe outer support structure and the inner wall of the KLOE
drift chamber. This calorimeter will be made of LYSO crystals readout by
Silicon Photomultipliers, to achieve an energy resolution better than 8% at 200

The Reaction in Generalized Chiral Perturbation Theory
The cross section for and the pion
polarizabilities are computed, within generalized chiral perturbation theory,
in the full one loop approximation, {\it i.e.} up to and including order
. The result depends on the parameter defining
the tree level scattering amplitude and on an additional low energy
constant. The latter is shown to be related by an exact sum-rule to the data. The parameter is related to the quark mass ratio
via the expansion of pseudoscalar meson masses. The
generalized one loop amplitude agrees with the
experimental data in the threshold region provided r= {m_s}/{\hat m}\lapprox
10. Higher order corrections are estimated comparing our calculation with the

Pion Interactions in Chiral Field Theories
We study in various chiral models the pion charge radius, form
factor ratio, amplitude, charge pion
polarizabilities, amplitude at low
energies and the s-wave I = 0 scattering length. We find that a
quark-level linear sigma-model approach (also being consistent with tree-level

The Effects of a Culturally Sensitive, Empowerment-Focused, Community-Based Health Promotion Program on Health Outcomes of Adults with Type 2 Diabetes
Th e purpose of the present study was to test the effects of a culturally sensitive, health empowerment- focused, community- based health promotion program tailored to adult patients with type 2 diabetes on these patients’ body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, and self- reported blood glucose levels, treatment adherence, and stress levels. Study participants (N = 130) consisted mostly of African Americans (70%) and Hispanic/ Latinos (22.3%) who were divided almost evenly between an intervention group and wait- list control group. Th e tested health promotion program is informed by Health Self- Empowerment Theory. At post- test, program participants in the intervention group as compared to those in the control group demonstrated significantly lower levels of BMI, diastolic blood pressure, and physical stress. Implications of these study findings for future similar programs and research are discussed

Low-energy dynamics of the reaction
We calculate the one-quark-loop amplitude for the low energy
collision in the context of the Nambu and Jona-Lasinio
model with scalar and pseudoscalar four quark couplings to all orders in the
external momenta. We show that the NJL predictions for the
reaction are not far from the Born amplitude, which
is close to the data, and is compatible with the chiral perturbation theory
estimations. We determine the corrections given by the NJL model in leading
order of to the chiral loop amplitude for .

approach. The amplitudes contain the pion polarizabilities and rather
restricted information about interaction. Application of these

Exclusive production of large invariant mass pion pairs in ultraperipheral ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions
The cross section for exclusive production of and
meson pairs in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is calculated for LHC
energy 3.5 TeV taking into account photon-photon mechanism.
We concentrate on the production of large two-pion invariant masses where the
mechanism of the elementary process is not fully
understood. In order to include a size of nuclei we perform calculation in the
impact-parameter equivalent photon approximation (EPA). Realistic charge
densities are used to calculate charged form factor of Pb nucleus and
to generate photon fluxes associated with ultrarelativistic heavy ions.
Sizeable cross sections are obtained that can be measured at LHC. The cross
section for elementary is calculated in the
framework of pQCD Brodsky-Lepage (BL) mechanism with the distribution amplitude
used to descibe recent data of the BABAR collaboration on pion transition form
factor, using hand-bag mechanism advocated to describe recent Belle data as
well as and -channel meson/reggeon exchanges. We present distributions
in two-pion invariant mass as well as the pion pair rapidity for the nuclear

Effects of a weight loss plus exercise program on physical function in overweight, older women: a randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND:
Obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are associated with physical impairments and biologic changes in older adults. Weight loss combined with exercise may reduce inflammation and improve physical functioning in overweight, sedentary, older adults. This study tested whether a weight loss program combined with moderate exercise could improve physical function in obese, older adult women.
METHODS:
Participants (N = 34) were generally healthy, obese, older adult women (age range 55-79 years) with mild to moderate physical impairments (ie, functional limitations). Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups for 24 weeks: (i) weight loss plus exercise (WL+E; n = 17; mean age = 63.7 years [4.5]) or (ii) educational control (n = 17; mean age = 63.7 [6.7]). In the WL+E group, participants attended a group-based weight management session plus three supervised exercise sessions within their community each week. During exercise sessions, participants engaged in brisk walking and lower-body resistance training of moderate intensity. Participants in the educational control group attended monthly health education lectures on topics relevant to older adults. Outcomes were: (i) body weight, (ii) walking speed (assessed by 400-meter walk test), (iii) the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), and (iv) knee extension isokinetic strength.
RESULTS:
Participants randomized to the WL+E group lost significantly more weight than participants in the educational control group (5.95 [0.992] vs 0.23 [0.99] kg; P < 0.01). Additionally, the walking speed of participants in the WL+E group significantly increased compared with that of the control group (reduction in time on the 400-meter walk test = 44 seconds; P < 0.05). Scores on the SPPB improved in both the intervention and educational control groups from pre- to post-test (P < 0.05), with significant differences between groups (P = 0.02). Knee extension strength was maintained in both groups.
CONCLUSION:
Our findings suggest that a lifestyle-based weight loss program consisting of moderate caloric restriction plus moderate exercise can produce significant weight loss and improve physical function while maintaining muscle strength in obese, older adult women with mild to moderate physical impairments
Photon-Photon Scattering, Pion Polarizability and Chiral Symmetry
Recent attempts to detect the pion polarizability via analysis of
measurements are examined. The connection
between calculations based on dispersion relations and on chiral perturbation
theory is established by matching the low energy chiral amplitude with that
given by a full dispersive treatment. Using the values for the polarizability
required by chiral symmetry, predicted and experimental cross sections are
