Studies on the use of sulfites to control shrimp melanosis (Blackspot) (Presented at the 11th Annual Meeting of the Tropical and Subtropical Fisheries Technological Conference of the Americas, January 14, 1986, Tampa, Florida)
Shrimp melanosis, commonly known as 'blackspot' is a
harmless but objectionable surface dicoloration caused by
polyphenoloxidase enzyme systems which remain active during
refrigeration or ice storage. In the early 1950's sulfiting
agents, particularily sodium bisulfite was first introduced to prevent or inhibit melanosis, thus yielding a more valuable harvest (1). Such use of sulfites was 'prior sanctioned1 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1956 (2). More recent FDA decisions reaffirmed this practice, (3) but continuing regulatory scrutiny could restrict or eliminate the application of sulfite on shrimp. The regulatory action is prompted by an increasing concern for adverse 'allergic' reactions most common amongst hyper-(sulfite) sensitive asthmatics. Thus work was initiated to find alternatives to replace or reduce the amount of sulfites required to inhibit
shrimp melanosis. This work would screen for possible
alternatives which would require subsequent verification with field tests and statistical evaluations. (21pp.
Stray Light Analysis of the SABER Telescope
The stray light analysis of the sounding of the atmosphere using broadband emission radiometry (SABER) instrument on the thermosphere-ionosphere-mesosphere energetics and dynamics (TIMED) mission is discussed. Relevant mission objectives and operating conditions are stated to define the stray light problem. Since SABER is an earth limb viewing sensor, the telescope must be designed for large off-axis rejection. Described are the key design features which make the instrument well suited for its mission. Representative point source transmittance (PST) curves computed using the commercial stray light program APART are presented. Non-rejected radiance (NRR) values computed using APART generated PST curves and LINEPACK generated curves for the total radiance from the earth aixi the afinosphere are given. A method for computing NRR from the earth and the atmosphere using lineof- sight radiance profiles versus tangent height is described. Computed NRR values demonstrate that the effect of stray light on SABER\u27s measurement capability is negligible
On the relation between hyperrings and fuzzy rings
We construct a full embedding of the category of hyperfields into Dress's category of fuzzy rings and explicitly characterize the essential image --- it fails to be essentially surjective in a very minor way. This embedding provides an identification of Baker's theory of matroids over hyperfields with Dress's theory of matroids over fuzzy rings (provided one restricts to those fuzzy rings in the essential image). The embedding functor extends from hyperfields to hyperrings, and we study this extension in detail. We also analyze the relation between hyperfields and Baker's partial demifields

Nitrogen hydrides in interstellar gas II. Analysis of Herschel/HIFI observations towards W49N and G10.6-0.4 (W31C)
We have used the Herschel-HIFI instrument to observe interstellar nitrogen
hydrides along the sight-lines towards W49N and G10.6-0.4 in order to elucidate
the production pathways leading to nitrogen-bearing species in diffuse gas. All
detections show absorption by foreground material over a wide range of
velocities, as well as absorption associated directly with the hot-core source
itself. As in the previously published observations towards G10.6-0.4, the NH,
NH2 and NH3 spectra towards W49N show strikingly similar and non-saturated
absorption features. We decompose the absorption of the foreground material
towards W49N into different velocity components in order to investigate whether
the relative abundances vary among the velocity components, and, in addition,
we re-analyse the absorption lines towards G10.6-0.4 in the same manner.
Abundances, with respect to molecular hydrogen, in each velocity component are
estimated using CH. The analysis points to a co-existence of the nitrogen
hydrides in diffuse or translucent interstellar gas with a high molecular
fraction. Towards both sources, we find that NH is always at least as abundant
as both o-NH2 and o-NH3, in sharp contrast to previous results for dark clouds.
We find relatively constant N(NH)/N(o-NH3) and N(o-NH2)/N(o-NH3) ratios with
mean values of 3.2 and 1.9 towards W49N, and 5.4 and 2.2 towards G10.6-0.4,
respectively. The mean abundance of o-NH3 is ~2x10^-9 towards both sources. The
nitrogen hydrides also show linear correlations with CN and HNC towards both
sources, and looser correlations with CH. The upper limits on the NH+ abundance
indicate column densities < 2 - 14 % of N(NH). Surprisingly low values of the
ammonia ortho-to-para ratio are found in both sources, ~0.5 - 0.7 +- 0.1. This
result cannot be explained by current models as we had expected to find a value
of unity or higher.Comment: 35 pages, 74 figure

Directed Neural Differentiation of Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells Is a Sensitive System for the Identification of Novel Hox Gene Effectors
The evolutionarily conserved Hox family of homeodomain transcription factors
plays fundamental roles in regulating cell specification along the anterior
posterior axis during development of all bilaterian animals by controlling cell
fate choices in a highly localized, extracellular signal and cell context
dependent manner. Some studies have established downstream target genes in
specific systems but their identification is insufficient to explain either the
ability of Hox genes to direct homeotic transformations or the
breadth of their patterning potential. To begin delineating Hox
gene function in neural development we used a mouse ES cell based system that
combines efficient neural differentiation with inducible Hoxb1 expression. Gene
expression profiling suggested that Hoxb1 acted as both
activator and repressor in the short term but predominantly as a repressor in
the long run. Activated and repressed genes segregated in distinct processes
suggesting that, in the context examined, Hoxb1 blocked
differentiation while activating genes related to early developmental processes,
wnt and cell surface receptor linked signal transduction and cell-to-cell
communication. To further elucidate aspects of Hoxb1 function
we used loss and gain of function approaches in the mouse and chick embryos. We
show that Hoxb1 acts as an activator to establish the full expression domain of
CRABPI and II in rhombomere 4 and as a
repressor to restrict expression of Lhx5 and
Lhx9. Thus the Hoxb1 patterning activity
includes the regulation of the cellular response to retinoic acid and the delay
of the expression of genes that commit cells to neural differentiation. The
results of this study show that ES neural differentiation and inducible
Hox gene expression can be used as a sensitive model system
to systematically identify Hox novel target genes, delineate
their interactions with signaling pathways in dictating cell fate and define the
extent of functional overlap among different Hox genes
Targeting of PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway to inhibit T cell activation and prevent graft-versus-host disease development
Producción CientíficaBackground: Graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) remains the major obstacle to successful allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, despite of the immunosuppressive regimens administered to control T cell alloreactivity. PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway is crucial in T cell activation and function and, therefore, represents an attractive therapeutic target to prevent GvHD development. Recently, numerous PI3K inhibitors have been developed for cancer therapy. However, few studies have explored their immunosuppressive effect. Methods: The effects of a selective PI3K inhibitor (BKM120) and a dual PI3K/mTOR inhibitor (BEZ235) on human T cell proliferation, expression of activation-related molecules, and phosphorylation of PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway proteins were analyzed. Besides, the ability of BEZ235 to prevent GvHD development in mice was evaluated. Results: Simultaneous inhibition of PI3K and mTOR was efficient at lower concentrations than PI3K specific targeting. Importantly, BEZ235 prevented naïve T cell activation and induced tolerance of alloreactive T cells, while maintaining an adequate response against cytomegalovirus, more efficiently than BKM120. Finally, BEZ235 treatment significantly
improved the survival and decreased the GvHD development in mice.
