Secondary School Staff’s Understanding of the Relationship between Problem Behaviour and Language Difficulties

The high incidence of undiagnosed language difficulties in students experiencing problem behaviours was the genesis of this exploratory study. The study considered how adults supporting these students understood the relationship between behaviour problems and language development. A mixed methods methodology was adopted and the study was located within a critical realist ontological stance and a constructionist epistemological position. Semi-structured interviews and a Q sort were used for data collection. Eight participants were interviewed and 20 participants completed the Q sort. The participants were Special Educational Needs Coordinators and Pastoral Managers based in local authority schools in the North of England. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the interview data set and the Q sort was analysed by an inverted factor analysis with a qualitative interpretation of the resultant factors. Finally, an integrated analysis using triangulation was conducted and this identified three meta-themes which indicated that despite a range of recent initiatives, school staff continued to have a limited understanding of the relationship between problem behaviours and language difficulties. School staff perceived their expertise to be within their subject areas and pedagogy and there was a reliance on previous experience and existing practice when considering causal relationships and interventions. The study has implications for Educational Psychology practice at casework and systems levels as well as for commissioning of services. Educational Psychologists (EPs) need to be aware that how school staff understand the relationship between behaviour and language may preclude the identification of language difficulties, as may their own theoretical lens. EPs can promote the development of data collection systems and interventions for language skills as well as supporting the initial training and continuing professional development of teachers in this area. Commissioners of services need to include EPs in multi-disciplinary teams to conduct comprehensive assessments of students with behaviour difficulties

High incidence of macrotroponin I with a high-sensitivity troponin I assay

Cardiac troponin is the preferred biomarker of myocardial injury. High-sensitivity troponin assays allow measurement of very low levels of troponin with excellent precision. After the introduction of a high-sensitivity troponin I assay the laboratory began to receive enquiries from clinicians about clinically discordant elevated troponin I results. This led to a systematic investigation and characterisation of the cause

A literature review of applied adaptive design methodology within the field of oncology in randomised controlled trials and a proposed extension to the CONSORT guidelines

Background: The application of adaptive design methodology within a clinical trial setting is becoming increasingly popular. However the application of these methods within trials is not being reported as adaptive designs hence making it more difficult to capture the emerging use of these designs. Within this review, we aim to understand how adaptive design methodology is being reported, whether these methods are explicitly stated as an 'adaptive design' or if it has to be inferred and to identify whether these methods are applied prospectively or concurrently. Methods: Three databases; Embase, Ovid and PubMed were chosen to conduct the literature search. The inclusion criteria for the review were phase II, phase III and phase II/III randomised controlled trials within the field of Oncology that published trial results in 2015. A variety of search terms related to adaptive designs were used. Results: A total of 734 results were identified, after screening 54 were eligible. Adaptive designs were more commonly applied in phase III confirmatory trials. The majority of the papers performed an interim analysis, which included some sort of stopping criteria. Additionally only two papers explicitly stated the term 'adaptive design' and therefore for most of the papers, it had to be inferred that adaptive methods was applied. Sixty-five applications of adaptive design methods were applied, from which the most common method was an adaptation using group sequential methods. Conclusion: This review indicated that the reporting of adaptive design methodology within clinical trials needs improving. The proposed extension to the current CONSORT 2010 guidelines could help capture adaptive design methods. Furthermore provide an essential aid to those involved with clinical trials

Background: Respectful maternity care is a fundamental human right, and an important component of quality maternity care. Objective: The aim of this study was to quantify the frequency and categories of D&A and identify factors associated with reporting D&A among women in north Showa zone of Ethiopia. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 435 randomly selected women who had given birth at public health facility within the previous 12 months in North Showa zone of Ethiopia. A digital (tablet-based) structured and researcher administered tool was used for data collection. Frequencies of D&A items organised around the Bowser and Hill categories of D&A and presented in the White Ribbon Alliance’s Universal Rights of Childbearing Women Framework were calculated. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify the association between experience of disrespect and abuse and interpersonal and structural factors at p-value <0.05 and odds ratio values with 95% confidence interval. Results: All participants reported at least one form of disrespect and abuse during childbirth. Types of disrespect and abuse experienced by participants were physical abuse 435 (100%), non-consented care 423 (97.2%), non-confidential care 288 (66.2%), abandonment/neglect (34.7%), non-dignified care 126 (29%), discriminatory care 99 (22.8%) and detention 24 (5.5%). Hospital birth [AOR: 3.04, 95% CI: 1.75, 5.27], rural residence [AOR: 1.44, 95% CI: 0.76, 2.71], monthly household income less than 1,644 Birr (USD 57) [AOR: 2.26, 95% CI: 1.20, 4.26], being attended by female providers [AOR: 1.74, 95% CI: 1.06, 2.86] and midwifery nurses [AOR: 2.23, 95% CI: 1.13, 4.39] showed positive association with experience of disrespect and abuse. Conclusion: Hospital birth showed consistent association with all forms of disrespect and abuse. Expanding the size and skill mix of professionals in the hospitals, sensitizing providers consequences of disrespect and abuse could promote dignified and respectful care. © 2021 The Author(s). Spectroscopy and Photochemistry of Pyrazolyl-Bridged Binuclear Iridium(I) Complexes

Spectroscopic studies of a series of pyrazolyl-bridged and substituted-pyrazolyl-bridged binuclear iridium(I) complexes indicate that the description of the metal-metal interactions in previously studied D4h d8-d8 rhodium(I), iridium(I), and platinum(II) species may be extended to these lower symmetry (C2v) d8-d8 molecules. Specifically, the 1A1(dσ)2 (dσ*)2 ground state exhibits weak metal-metal bonding, and the lowest excited states are a singlet (1B2) and triplet (3B2) derived from the (dσ)2(dσ*)1(pσ)1 electronic configuration. The 1B2 and 3B2 excited states, which are expected to feature strong metal-meta1 bonding, are 1uminescent at ambient temperature in fluid solution. Electronic absorption and emission spectroscopic studies and photophysical investigations of the emissive singlet and triplet excited states of bis(1,5-cyclooctadiene)bis(µ-pyrazolyl)diiridium(I), [Ir(µ-pz)(COD)]2, and analogous substituted-pyrazolyl complexes are presented in Chapter 2. The absorption spectrum of [Ir(µ-pz)(COD)]2 exhibits an intense band attributable to 1A1 → 1B2 at 498 nm (ε = 8100 M-1cm-1). Both fluorescence (λmax = 558 nm, Φem = 0.0001, τ < 20 ps) and phosphorescence (λmax = 684 nm, Φem = 0.0078, τ = 250 ns) from the 1B2 and 3B2 excited states, respectively, are observed at ambient temperature for this complex. The absorption and emission spectra of the substituted-pyrazolyl complexes show similar features. In addition, ground-state resonance Raman studies of these complexes suggest the presence of a reasonable metal-metal bonding interaction in the formally nonbonded binuclear center; excitation into the bands corresponding to the metal-metal localized 1A1 → 1B2 transition results in resonance-enhancement of vibrations at frequencies of of 58 cm-1 to 80 cm-1 that are assigned to ν(Ir-Ir ). The long lifetime of the 3B2(dσ*pσ) excited state of [Ir(µ-pz)-(COD)]2 implies that it should be able to participate in bimolecular reactions. The results presented in Chapter 3 show that this strongly reducing excited state undergoes photoinduced electron transfer with a variety of substrates including reversible electron transfer to one-electron acceptors such as methyl viologen and pyridinium monocations. For pyridinium acceptors with reduction potentials ranging from -0.67 V to -1.85 V vs. SSCE, the rates of electron-transfer quenching range from a diffusion-limited rate of 2.0 x 1010 M-1s-1 to 1.1 x 106 M-1s-1 and obey Marcus-theory predictions for outer-sphere electron transfer in the "normal free-energy region." However, the rates do not decrease as predicted for the "inverted free-energy region." With acceptors such as halocarbons, the unproductive back-electron-transfer reaction can be circumvented, and net two-electron, photoinduced electron transfer yields iridium(II)-iridium(II) oxidative addition products. Chapter 4 focuses on spectroscopic and photophysical investigations of pyrazolyl-bridged binuclear iridium(I) complexes containing carbon monoxide ligands. Spectroscopic studies of tetracarbonylbis(µ-pyrazolyl)diiridium(I), tetracarbonylbis(µ-3-methylpyrazolyl)diiridium(I), and tetracarbonylbis(µ-3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)diiridium(I) reveal interesting features in the electronic absorption spectra at ambient temperature and 77 K that may be assigned to dπ(xz,yz) → [σ(pz), π*(CO)] transitions and predominantly metal-metal localized σ*(dz2) → [σ(pz),π* (CO)] transitions that reflect the degree of metal-meta1 interaction. Photophysical studies of the emissive 1,3B2(dσ* pσ) excited states suggest that a higher-energy d-d excited state may provide a pathway for thermal deactivation of these states.</p

A contribution to the taxonomic study of insular Newfoundland caddis flies (Trichoptera)

Get PDF
Ninety-seven species of Trichoptera in 38 genera from 13 families are recorded from insular Newfoundland. Fifty-four of these are new records. -- About 2000 adults were collected and identified by the author. In addition about 700 specimens from other collectors were identified by the author. Also included are the caddis fly collections of the Canada Agricultural Research Station, St. John’s, totalling some 150 previously identified specimens. -- All specimens were collected with “blacklight” fluorescent traps. -- Keys are given to families, genera, and species known from Newfoundland. Illustrations are given of morphological differences separating families and genera. The male genitalia are the definitive species characteristic and all are figured except those of Hydroptilidae. Female genitalia are drawn only if no published figures are available. -- The geographical range in North America is given for each Newfoundland species, with particular emphasis on their known northeastern and eastern distributions. -- The Newfoundland trichopteran fauna, although poorer in species, is apparently similar to the caddis fly fauna a northeastern North America
