Sub-femtosecond electron bunches created by direct laser acceleration in a laser wakefield accelerator with ionization injection
In this work, we will show through three-dimensional particle-in-cell
simulations that direct laser acceleration in laser a wakefield accelerator can
generate sub-femtosecond electron bunches. Two simulations were done with two
laser pulse durations, such that the shortest laser pulse occupies only a
fraction of the first bubble, whereas the longer pulse fills the entire first
bubble. In the latter case, as the trapped electrons moved forward and
interacted with the high intensity region of the laser pulse, micro-bunching
occurred naturally, producing 0.5 fs electron bunches. This is not observed in
the short pulse simulation.Comment: AAC 201
Geologic applications of thermal inertia image using HCMM data

Comparison of a simulated HCMM image of the Pisgah Crater, California test site obtained from aircraft data with an image generated from the preliminary satellite data tape of the area indicates that the HCMM satellite data appears much as predicted by the simulation
The Grassmannian Sigma Model in SU(2) Yang-Mills Theory
Spin-charge separation in pure SU(2) Yang-Mills theory was recently found to
involve the dynamics of an O(3) non-linear sigma model and, seemingly, a
Grassmannian non-linear sigma model. In this article we explicitly construct
the Grassmannian sigma model of the form appearing in the the spin-charge
separated SU(2) theory through a quaternionic decomposition of the manifold,
thus verifying its relevance in this context. The coupling between this model

Dissipative Particle Dynamics with Energy Conservation
The stochastic differential equations for a model of dissipative particle
dynamics with both total energy and total momentum conservation in the
particle-particle interactions are presented. The corresponding Fokker-Planck
equation for the evolution of the probability distribution for the system is
deduced together with the corresponding fluctuation-dissipation theorems
ensuring that the ab initio chosen equilibrium probability distribution for the
relevant variables is a stationary solution. When energy conservation is
included, the system can sustain temperature gradients and heat flow can be

A Mid-Infrared Imaging Survey of Embedded Young Stellar Objects in the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Core
Results of a comprehensive, new, ground-based mid-infrared imaging survey of
the young stellar population of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud are presented. Data were
acquired at the Palomar 5-m and at the Keck 10-m telescopes with the MIRLIN and
LWS instruments, at 0.25 arcsec and 0.25 arcsec resolutions, respectively. Of
172 survey objects, 85 were detected. Among the 22 multiple systems observed,
15 were resolved and their individual component fluxes determined. A plot of
the frequency distribution of the detected objects with SED spectral slope
shows that YSOs spend ~400,000 yr in the Flat Spectrum phase, clearing out
their remnant infall envelopes. Mid-infrared variability is found among a
significant fraction of the surveyed objects, and is found to occur for all SED
classes with optically thick disks. Large-amplitude near-infrared variability,
also found for all SED classes with optically thick disks, seems to occur with
somewhat higher frequency at the earlier evolutionary stages. Although a
general trend of mid-infrared excess and NIR veiling exists proceeding through
SED classes, with Class I objects generally exhibiting K-veilings > 1, Flat
Spectrum objects with K-veilings > 0.58, and Class III objects with K-veilings
=0, Class II objects exhibit the widest range of K-band veiling values, 0-4.5.
However, the highly variable value of veiling that a single source can exhibit
in any of the SED classes in which active disk accretion can take place is
striking, and is direct observational evidence for highly time-variable
accretion activity in disks. Finally, by comparing mid-infrared vs.
near-infrared excesses in a subsample with well-determined effective
temperatures and extinction values, disk clearing mechanisms are explored. The
results are consistent with disk clearing proceeding from the inside-out.Comment: 18 pages + 5 tables + 7 figure
Plasma deposition of constrained layer damping coatings
Plasma techniques are used to generate constrained layer damping (CLD) coatings on metallic substrates. The process involves the deposition of relatively thick, hard ceramic layers on to soft polymeric damping materials while maintaining the integrity of both layers. Reactive plasma sputter-deposition from an aluminium alloy target is used to deposit alumina layers, with Young's modulus in the range 77-220GPa and thickness up to 335 μ, on top of a silicone film. This methodology is also used to deposit a 40 μ alumina layer on a conventional viscoelastic damping film to produce an integral damping coating. Plasma CLD systems are shown to give at least 50 per cent more damping than equivalent metal-foil-based treatments. Numerical methods for rapid prediction of the performance of such coatings are discussed and validated by comparison with experimental results
Cause-specific child mortality in a mountainous community in Pakistan by verbal autopsy
In Pakistan\u27s rural areas population-based cause of death data from systematic verbal autopsies are rare. Using verbal autopsy algorithms with multiple coding and decision rules, we assigned causes of death among 79% of children under age five years dying between July, 1988 and December, 1991 in Oshikhandass, a remote mountainous community in Pakistan\u27s Northern Areas. Main causes of death were pneumonia (44%), diarrhoea (35%), and neonatal sepsis (6%). Combined (main plus associated) analysis revealed 48% died with diarrhoea, 46% with malnutrition, 44% with pneumonia, 15% with neonatal sepsis, and 15% with low birth weight. Median age of death with pneumonia was 2 months, with diarrhoea 8 months. Half died by month 4. The inquiry was well received by villagers. Population-based verbal autopsy surveillance is a cost-effective strategy to guide health managers. Plans are underway to institute it for the surrounding population of 400,000. Creative ways to access, treat and reduce risk among young infants are needed

Drift-induced deceleration of Solar Energetic Particles
We investigate the deceleration of Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs) during their propagation from the Sun through interplanetary space, in the presence of weak to strong scattering in a Parker spiral configuration, using relativistic full orbit test particle simulations. The calculations retain all three spatial variables describing particles’ trajectories, allowing to model any transport across the magnetic field. Large energy change is shown to occur for protons, due to the combined effect of standard adiabatic deceleration and a significant contribution from particle drift in the direction opposite to that of the solar wind electric field. The latter drift-induced deceleration is found to have a stronger effect for SEP energies than for galactic cosmic rays. The kinetic energy of protons injected at 1 MeV is found to be reduced by between 35 and 90% after four days, and for protons injected at 100 MeV by between 20 and 55%. The overall degree of deceleration is a weak function of the scattering mean free path, showing that, although adiabatic deceleration plays a role, a large contribution is due to particle drift. Current SEP transport models are found to account for drift-induced deceleration in an approximate way and their accuracy will need to be assessed in future work
