    Study of the Libraries’ Information and Research Services

    In spring 2011 Public Services Division Mangers charged the Information and Research Services Team (IRST) to analyze and make recommendations for service improvement for all areas of Information and Research Services. IRST conducted surveys, interviews, literature review and an environmental scan of University of Maryland Libraries and other institutions in order to assess and evaluate the current information services situation and collect information for the following recommendation. In the ‘Considerations’ and ‘Recommendations’ sections, IRST identified the following areas that need to be modified: staffing, technology and physical spaces.     Enabling comparative modeling of closely related genomes: Example genus Brucella

    For many scientific applications, it is highly desirable to be able to compare metabolic models of closely related genomes. In this short report, we attempt to raise awareness to the fact that taking annotated genomes from public repositories and using them for metabolic model reconstructions is far from being trivial due to annotation inconsistencies. We are proposing a protocol for comparative analysis of metabolic models on closely related genomes, using fifteen strains of genus Brucella, which contains pathogens of both humans and livestock. This study lead to the identification and subsequent correction of inconsistent annotations in the SEED database, as well as the identification of 31 biochemical reactions that are common to Brucella, which are not originally identified by automated metabolic reconstructions. We are currently implementing this protocol for improving automated annotations within the SEED database and these improvements have been propagated into PATRIC, Model-SEED, KBase and RAST. This method is an enabling step for the future creation of consistent annotation systems and high-quality model reconstructions that will support in predicting accurate phenotypes such as pathogenicity, media requirements or type of respiration.We thank Jean Jacques Letesson, Maite Iriarte, Stephan Kohler and David O'Callaghan for their input on improving specific annotations.     Genetic Determinants of Financial Risk Taking

    Individuals vary in their willingness to take financial risks. Here we show that variants of two genes that regulate dopamine and serotonin neurotransmission and have been previously linked to emotional behavior, anxiety and addiction (5-HTTLPR and DRD4) are significant determinants of risk taking in investment decisions. We find that the 5-HTTLPR s/s allele carriers take 28% less risk than those carrying the s/l or l/l alleles of the gene. DRD4 7-repeat allele carriers take 25% more risk than individuals without the 7-repeat allele. These findings contribute to the emerging literature on the genetic determinants of economic behavior

    Primary Phacoemulsification and Intraocular Lens Implantation for Acute Primary Angle-Closure

    Background: To investigate the effect of primary phacoemulsification on intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with acute primary angle-closure (PAC) and coexisting cataract. Methodology: Sixteen eyes of 14 patients with acute PAC received phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation as initial management for medically uncontrolled IOP in a retrospective chart review. The effects on IOP, vision, anterior chamber depth (ACD), and number of antiglaucoma medications were evaluated. Principal Findings: The postoperative IOP was reduced in 16 eyes (100%). The mean 6 standard deviation preoperative IOP was 48.81616.83 mm Hg, which decreased postoperatively to 16.46610.67 mm Hg at 1 day, 9.4363.03 mm Hg at 1 week

    Diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection among HIV discordant partners using interferon gamma release assays

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>There is limited data on the effect of HIV status and CD4 counts on performance of Interferon-<b>g </b>Release assays (IGRAs) for diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cross sectional study was conducted to assess the prevalence of and risk factors for a positive diagnostic test for LTBI, using tuberculin skin test (TST) and IGRAs among HIV-discordant couples in Zambia.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 596 subjects (298 couples) were enrolled. Median CD4 count among HIV positive persons was 388 cells/μl, (range 51-1330). HIV negative persons were more likely than their HIV positive partner, to have a positive diagnostic test for LTBI with TST (203 vs 128), QFT (171 vs 109) and TSPOT (156 vs. 109). On multivariate analysis, HIV negative status was an independent predictor for a positive QFT (OR = 2.22, 95% CI 1.42- 3.46) and TSPOT (OR = 1.79, 95% CI 1.16-2.77). Among HIV positive subjects a CD4 count ≥ 388 cells/μl was associated with a positive TST (OR = 1.76 95% CI 1.10-2.82) and QFT (OR = 1.71 95% CI 1.06-2.77) but not TSPOT (OR = 1.20 95% CI 0.74-1.94).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Persons with HIV had significantly fewer positive diagnostic tests for LTBI with TST, QFT and TSPOT. Persons with a CD4 count < 388 cells/μl were less likely to have a positive TST or QFT, but not less likely to have a positive TSPOT. TSPOT may perform better than TST or QFT in HIV positive individuals.</p

    Cross-Section Measurement of Virtual Photoproduction of Iso-Triplet Three-Body Hypernucleus, ⋀nn

    Missing-mass spectroscopy with the 3H(e, e′K+) reaction was carried out at Jefferson Lab’s (JLab) Hall A in Oct–Nov, 2018. The differential cross section for the 3H(γ∗, K+)Λnn was deduced at ω = Ee − Ee′ = 2.102 GeV and at the forward K+-scattering angle (0° ≤ θγ∗K ≤ 5°) in the laboratory frame. Given typical predicted energies and decay widths, which are (BΛ, Γ) = (−0.25, 0.8) and (−0.55, 4.7) MeV, the cross sections were found to be 11.2 ± 4.8(stat.)+4.1−2.1(sys.) and 18.1 ± 6.8(stat.)+4.2−2.9(sys.) nb/sr, respectively. The obtained result would impose a constraint for interaction models particularly between Λ and neutron by comparing to theoretical calculations

    First Measurement of the EMC Effect in 10^{10}B and 11^{11}B

    The nuclear dependence of the inclusive inelastic electron scattering cross section (the EMC effect) has been measured for the first time in 10^{10}B and 11^{11}B. Previous measurements of the EMC effect in A12A \leq 12 nuclei showed an unexpected nuclear dependence; 10^{10}B and 11^{11}B were measured to explore the EMC effect in this region in more detail. Results are presented for 9^9Be, 10^{10}B, 11^{11}B, and 12^{12}C at an incident beam energy of 10.6~GeV. The EMC effect in the boron isotopes was found to be similar to that for 9^9Be and 12^{12}C, yielding almost no nuclear dependence in the EMC effect in the range A=412A=4-12. This represents important, new data supporting the hypothesis that the EMC effect depends primarily on the local nuclear environment due to the cluster structure of these nuclei.Comment: Submitted to PR
