The Deformable Mirror Demonstration Mission (DeMi) CubeSat: optomechanical design validation and laboratory calibration
Coronagraphs on future space telescopes will require precise wavefront
correction to detect Earth-like exoplanets near their host stars. High-actuator
count microelectromechanical system (MEMS) deformable mirrors provide wavefront
control with low size, weight, and power. The Deformable Mirror Demonstration
Mission (DeMi) payload will demonstrate a 140 actuator MEMS deformable mirror
(DM) with \SI{5.5}{\micro\meter} maximum stroke. We present the flight
optomechanical design, lab tests of the flight wavefront sensor and wavefront
reconstructor, and simulations of closed-loop control of wavefront aberrations.
We also present the compact flight DM controller, capable of driving up to 192
actuator channels at 0-250V with 14-bit resolution. Two embedded Raspberry Pi 3
compute modules are used for task management and wavefront reconstruction. The
spacecraft is a 6U CubeSat (30 cm x 20 cm x 10 cm) and launch is planned for

The impact of believing you have had COVID-19 on self-reported behaviour: Cross-sectional survey.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether people who think they have had COVID-19 are less likely to report engaging with lockdown measures compared with those who think they have not had COVID-19. DESIGN: On-line cross-sectional survey. SETTING: Data were collected between 20th and 22nd April 2020. PARTICIPANTS: 6149 participants living in the UK aged 18 years or over. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Perceived immunity to COVID-19, self-reported adherence to social distancing measures (going out for essential shopping, nonessential shopping, and meeting up with friends/family; total out-of-home activity), worry about COVID-19 and perceived risk of COVID-19 to oneself and people in the UK. Knowledge that cough and high temperature / fever are the main symptoms of COVID-19. We used logistic regression analyses and one-way ANOVAs to investigate associations between believing you had had COVID-19 and binary and continuous outcomes respectively. RESULTS: In this sample, 1493 people (24.3%) thought they had had COVID-19 but only 245 (4.0%) reported having received a positive test result. Reported test results were often incongruent with participants' belief that they had had COVID-19. People who believed that they had had COVID-19 were: more likely to agree that they had some immunity to COVID-19; less likely to report adhering to lockdown measures; less worried about COVID-19; and less likely to know that cough and high temperature / fever are two of the most common symptoms of COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS: At the time of data collection, the percentage of people in the UK who thought they had already had COVID-19 was about twice the estimated infection rate. Those who believed they had had COVID-19 were more likely to report leaving home. This may contribute to transmission of the virus. Clear communications to this growing group are needed to explain why protective measures continue to be important and to encourage sustained adherence
The rocket experiment demonstration of a soft x-ray polarimeter (REDSoX Polarimeter)
The Rocket Experiment Demonstration of a Soft X-ray Polarimeter (REDSoX Polarimeter) is a sounding rocket instrument that can make the first measurement of the linear X-ray p olarization of an extragalactic source in the 0.2-0.8 keV band as low as 10%. We employ multilayer-coated mirrors as Bragg reflectors at the Brewster angle. By matching the dispersion of a spectrometer using replicated optics from MSFC and critical angle transmission gratings from MIT to three laterally graded multilayer mirrors (LGMLs), we achieve polarization modulation factors over 90%. We present a novel arrangement of gratings, designed optimally for the purpose of polarimetry with a converging beam. The entrance aperture is divided into six equal sectors; pairs of blazed gratings from opposite sectors are oriented to disperse to the same LGML. The LGML position angles are 120 degrees to each other. CCD detectors then measure the intensities of the dispersed spectra after reflection and polarizing by the LGMLs, giving the three Stokes parameters needed to determine a source's linear polarization fraction and orientation. A current grant is funding further development to improve the LGMLs. Sample gratings for the project have been fabricated at MIT and the development team continues to improve them under separate funding. Exercise training improves long-term memory in obese mice
Obesity has been linked to a range of pathologies, including dementia. In contrast, regular physical activity is associated with the prevention or reduced progression of neurodegeneration. Specifically, physical activity can improve memory and spatial cognition, reduce age-related cognitive decline, and preserve brain volume, but the mechanisms are not fully understood. Accordingly, we investigated whether any detrimental effects of high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity on cognition, motor behavior, adult hippocampal neurogenesis, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) could be mitigated by voluntary exercise training in male C57Bl/6 mice. HFD-induced impairment of motor function was not reversed by exercise. Importantly, voluntary wheel running improved long-term memory and increased hippocampal neurogenesis, suggesting that regular physical activity may prevent cognitive decline in obesity
Denial at the top table: status attributions and implications for marketing
Senior marketing management is seldom represented on the Board of Directors nowadays, reflecting a deteriorating status of the marketing profession. We examine some of the key reasons for marketing’s demise, and discuss how the status of marketing may be restored by demonstrating the value of marketing to the business community. We attribute marketing’s demise to several related key factors: narrow typecasting, marginalisation and limited involvement in product development, questionable marketing curricula, insensitivity toward environmental change, questionable professional standards and roles, and marketing’s apparent lack of accountability to CEOs. Each of these leads to failure to communicate, create, or deliver value within marketing. We argue that a continued inability to deal with marketing’s crisis of representation will further erode the status of the discipline both academically and professionally
The BLAST Survey of the Vela Molecular Cloud: Physical Properties of the Dense Cores in Vela-D
The Balloon-borne Large-Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST) carried out
a 250, 350 and 500 micron survey of the galactic plane encompassing the Vela
Molecular Ridge, with the primary goal of identifying the coldest dense cores
possibly associated with the earliest stages of star formation. Here we present
the results from observations of the Vela-D region, covering about 4 square
degrees, in which we find 141 BLAST cores. We exploit existing data taken with
the Spitzer MIPS, IRAC and SEST-SIMBA instruments to constrain their
(single-temperature) spectral energy distributions, assuming a dust emissivity
index beta = 2.0. This combination of data allows us to determine the
temperature, luminosity and mass of each BLAST core, and also enables us to
separate starless from proto-stellar sources. We also analyze the effects that
the uncertainties on the derived physical parameters of the individual sources
have on the overall physical properties of starless and proto-stellar cores,
and we find that there appear to be a smooth transition from the pre- to the
proto-stellar phase. In particular, for proto-stellar cores we find a
correlation between the MIPS24 flux, associated with the central protostar, and
the temperature of the dust envelope. We also find that the core mass function
of the Vela-D cores has a slope consistent with other similar (sub)millimeter

BLAST: The Mass Function, Lifetimes, and Properties of Intermediate Mass Cores from a 50 Square Degree Submillimeter Galactic Survey in Vela (l = ~265)
We present first results from an unbiased 50 deg^2 submillimeter Galactic
survey at 250, 350, and 500 micron from the 2006 flight of the Balloon-borne
Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST). The map has resolution ranging
from 36 arcsec to 60 arcsec in the three submillimeter bands spanning the
thermal emission peak of cold starless cores. We determine the temperature,
luminosity, and mass of more than one thousand compact sources in a range of
evolutionary stages and an unbiased statistical characterization of the
population. From comparison with C^(18)O data, we find the dust opacity per gas
mass, kappa r = 0.16 cm^2 g^(-1) at 250 micron, for cold clumps. We find that
2% of the mass of the molecular gas over this diverse region is in cores colder
than 14 K, and that the mass function for these cold cores is consistent with a
power law with index alpha = -3.22 +/- 0.14 over the mass range 14 M_sun < M <
80 M_sun. Additionally, we infer a mass-dependent cold core lifetime of t_c(M)
= 4E6 (M/20 M_sun)^(-0.9) years - longer than what has been found in previous
surveys of either low or high mass cores, and significantly longer than free
fall or likely turbulent decay times. This implies some form of non-thermal

Deconvolution of Images from BLAST 2005: Insight into the K3-50 and IC 5146 Star-Forming Regions
We present an implementation of the iterative flux-conserving Lucy-Richardson
(L-R) deconvolution method of image restoration for maps produced by the
Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST). We have analyzed
its performance and convergence extensively through simulations and
cross-correlations of the deconvolved images with available highresolution
maps. We present new science results from two BLAST surveys, in the Galactic
regions K3-50 and IC 5146, further demonstrating the benefits of performing
this deconvolution.
We have resolved three clumps within a radius of 4.'5 inside the star-forming
molecular cloud containing K3-50. Combining the well-resolved dust emission map
with available multi-wavelength data, we have constrained the Spectral Energy
Distributions (SEDs) of five clumps to obtain masses (M), bolometric
luminosities (L), and dust temperatures (T). The L-M diagram has been used as a
diagnostic tool to estimate the evolutionary stages of the clumps. There are
close relationships between dust continuum emission and both 21-cm radio
continuum and 12CO molecular line emission.
The restored extended large scale structures in the Northern Streamer of IC
5146 have a strong spatial correlation with both SCUBA and high resolution
extinction images. A dust temperature of 12 K has been obtained for the central
filament. We report physical properties of ten compact sources, including six
associated protostars, by fitting SEDs to multi-wavelength data. All of these
compact sources are still quite cold (typical temperature below ~ 16 K) and are
above the critical Bonner-Ebert mass. They have associated low-power Young
Stellar Objects (YSOs). Further evidence for starless clumps has also been
