Low-temperature magnetization in geometrically frustrated Tb2Ti2O7
The nature of the low temperature ground state of the pyrochlore compound
Tb2Ti2O7 remains a puzzling issue. Dynamic fluctuations and short-range
correlations persist down to 50 mK, as evidenced by microscopic probes. In
parallel, magnetization measurements show irreversibilities and glassy behavior
below 200 mK. We have performed magnetization and AC susceptibility
measurements on four single crystals down to 57 mK. We did not observe a clear
plateau in the magnetization as a function of field along the [111] direction,
as suggested by the quantum spin ice model. In addition to a freezing around
200 mK, slow dynamics are observed in the AC susceptibility up to 4 K. The
overall frequency dependence cannot be described by a canonical spin-glass
behavior.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures + Supp. Mat (3 pages, 5 figures
Evidence for unidimensional low-energy excitations as the origin of persistent spin dynamics in geometrically frustrated magnets
We report specific heat, magnetic, and muon spin relaxation measurements
performed on a polycrystalline sample of the normal spinel CdHo2S4. The
rare-earth ions sit on a lattice of corner-sharing regular tetrahedra as in
pyrochlore compounds. Magnetic ordering is detected at Tc ~ 0.87 K. From
spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements on both sides of Tc we uncover
similar magnetic excitation modes driving the so-called persistent spin
dynamics at T < Tc. Unidimensional excitations are argued to be at its origin.
Often observed spin loop structures are suggested to support these excitations.
The possibility of a generic mechanism for their existence is discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
A low-luminosity type-1 QSO sample; III. Optical spectroscopic properties and activity classification
We report on the optical spectroscopic analysis of a sample of 99
low-luminosity quasi-stellar objects (LLQSOs) at base the
Hamburg/ESO QSO survey (HES). The LLQSOs presented here offer the possibility
of studying the faint end of the QSO population at smaller cosmological
distances and, therefore, in greater detail. A small number of our LLQSO
present no broad component. Two sources show double broad components, whereas
six comply with the classic NLS1 requirements. As expected in NLR of broad line
AGNs, the [S{\sc{ii}}]based electron density values range between 100 and
1000 N/cm. Using the optical characteristics of Populations A and
B, we find that 50\% of our sources with H broad emission are consistent
with the radio-quiet sources definition. The remaining sources could be
interpreted as low-luminosity radio-loud quasar. The BPT-based classification
renders an AGN/Seyfert activity between 50 to 60\%. For the remaining sources,
the possible star burst contribution might control the LINER and HII
classification. Finally, we discuss the aperture effect as responsible for the
differences found between data sets, although variability in the BLR could play
a significant role as well.Comment: 22 pages; 5 tables; 17 figures; in press with A&
Resonant X-ray diffraction studies on the charge ordering in magnetite
Here we show that the low temperature phase of magnetite is associated with
an effective, although fractional, ordering of the charge. Evidence and a
quantitative evaluation of the atomic charges are achieved by using resonant
x-ray diffraction (RXD) experiments whose results are further analyzed with the
help of ab initio calculations of the scattering factors involved. By
confirming the results obtained from X-ray crystallography we have shown that
RXD is able to probe quantitatively the electronic structure in very complex
oxides, whose importance covers a wide domain of applications.Comment: 4 pages 4 figures, accepted for publication in PR
Smart-RED: A novel congestion control mechanism for high throughput and low queuing delay
We consider the scenario in which several TCP connections share the same access point (AP) and a congestion avoidance/control mechanism is adopted with the aim of assigning the available bandwidth to the clients with a certain fairness. When UDP traffic with real-time requirements is present, the problem becomes even more challenging. Very well-known congestion avoidance mechanisms are the Random Early Detection (RED) and the Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN). More recently, the Smart Access Point with Limited Advertised Window (SAP-LAW) has been proposed. Its main idea is that of computing the maximum TCP rate for each connection at the bottleneck, taking into account the UDP traffic to keep a low queue size combined with a reasonable bandwidth utilization. In this paper, we propose a new congestion control mechanism, namely, Smart-RED, inspired by SAP-LAW heuristic formula. We study its performance by using mean field models and compare the behaviours of ECN/RED, SAP-LAW, and Smart-RED under different scenarios. We show that while Smart-RED maintains some of the desirable properties of the SAP-LAW, it solves the problems it may have in case of bursty UDP traffic or TCP connections with very different needs of bandwidth
