Estimating Drag and Heating Coefficients for Hollow Reentry Objects in Transitional Flow Using DSMC
In NASAs Object Reentry Survival Analysis Tool (ORSAT), aerodynamic drag and aerothermal heating coefficients are computed for each of the free-molecular, continuum, and transitional flow regimes using analytical and semi-analytical methods. These methods are typically limited to convex, blunt objects (such as spheres) and are applied to other objects such as boxes and cylinders using multiplicative shape factors to account for the different behavior. Previous literature has analyzed the aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic properties of flow around sharp-edged objects like boxes and cylinders in transitional flow, though only those objects with solid external boundaries. However, many reentry objects we have encountered in real spacecraft have been hollow (i.e., with the potential to allow flow through them). We present here preliminary results from analyses performed using the NASA Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) Analysis Code (DAC) on hollow cylinders and boxes (with varying wall thickness-diameter ratio)
Plume-Free Stream Interaction Heating Effects During Orion Crew Module Reentry
During reentry of the Orion Crew Module (CM), vehicle attitude control will be performed by firing reaction control system (RCS) thrusters. Simulation of RCS plumes and their interaction with the oncoming flow has been difficult for the analysis community due to the large scarf angles of the RCS thrusters and the unsteady nature of the Orion capsule backshell environments. The model for the aerothermal database has thus relied on wind tunnel test data to capture the heating effects of thruster plume interactions with the freestream. These data are only valid for the continuum flow regime of the reentry trajectory. A Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) analysis was performed to study the vehicle heating effects that result from the RCS thruster plume interaction with the oncoming freestream flow at high altitudes during Orion CM reentry. The study was performed with the DSMC Analysis Code (DAC). The inflow boundary conditions for the jets were obtained from Data Parallel Line Relaxation (DPLR) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solutions. Simulations were performed for the roll, yaw, pitch-up and pitch-down jets at altitudes of 105 km, 125 km and 160 km as well as vacuum conditions. For comparison purposes (see Figure 1), the freestream conditions were based on previous DAC simulations performed without active RCS to populate the aerodynamic database for the Orion CM. Other inputs to the analysis included a constant Orbital reentry velocity of 7.5 km/s and angle of attack of 160 degrees. The results of the study showed that the interaction effects decrease quickly with increasing altitude. Also, jets with highly scarfed nozzles cause more severe heating compared to the nozzles with lower scarf angles. The difficulty of performing these simulations was based on the maximum number density and the ratio of number densities between the freestream and the plume for each simulation. The lowest altitude solutions required a substantial amount of computational resources (up to 1800 processors) to simulate approximately 2 billion molecules for the refined (adapted) solutions
Analysis of Plume Impingement Effects from Orion Crew Service Module Dual Reaction Control System Engine Firings
Plume impingement effects on the Orion Crew Service Module (CSM) were analyzed for various dual Reaction Control System (RCS) engine firings and various configurations of the solar arrays. The study was performed using a decoupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) approach. This approach included a single jet plume solution for the R1E RCS engine computed with the General Aerodynamic Simulation Program (GASP) CFD code. The CFD solution was used to create an inflow surface for the DSMC solution based on the Bird continuum breakdown parameter. The DSMC solution was then used to model the dual RCS plume impingement effects on the entire CSM geometry with deployed solar arrays. However, because the continuum breakdown parameter of 0.5 could not be achieved due to geometrical constraints and because high resolution in the plume shock interaction region is desired, a focused DSMC simulation modeling only the plumes and the shock interaction region was performed. This high resolution intermediate solution was then used as the inflow to the larger DSMC solution to obtain plume impingement heating, forces, and moments on the CSM and the solar arrays for a total of 21 cases that were analyzed. Operational and Technical Updates to the Object Reentry Survival Analysis Tool
The Object Reentry Survival Analysis Tool (ORSAT) has been used in the NASA Orbital Debris Program Office for over 25 years to estimate risk due to uncontrolled reentry of spacecraft and rocket bodies. Development over the last 3 years has included: a major change to the treatment of carbon fiber- and glass fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP and GFRP, respectively); an updated atmospheric model; a new model for computing casualty area around an impacting debris object; and a newly-implemented scheme to determine the breakup altitude of a reentry object. Software also was written to automatically perform parameter sweeps in ORSAT to allow for uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis for components with borderline demisability. These updates have improved the speed and fidelity of the reentry analysis performed using ORSAT, and have allowed for improved engineering understanding by estimating the uncertainty for each components survivability. A statistical model for initial conditions captures the latitude bias in population density, a large improvement over the previous inclination-based latitude-averaged models. A sample spacecraft has been analyzed with standard techniques using ORSAT 6.2.1 and again using all the updated models; we will demonstrate the variation in the total debris casualty area and overall expectation of casualty
Boundary Layer Protuberance Simulations in Channel Nozzle Arc-Jet
Two protuberance designs were modeled in the channel nozzle of the NASA Johnson Space Center Atmospheric Reentry Materials and Structures Facility with the Data-Parallel Line Relaxation computational fluid dynamics code. The heating on the protuberance was compared to nominal baseline heating at a single fixed arc-jet condition in order to obtain heating augmentation factors for flight traceability in the Boundary Layer Transition Flight Experiment on Space Shuttle Orbiter flights STS-119 and STS-128. The arc-jet simulations were performed in conjunction with the actual ground tests performed on the protuberances. The arc-jet simulations included non-uniform inflow conditions based on the current best practices methodology and used variable enthalpy and constant mass flow rate across the throat. Channel walls were modeled as fully catalytic isothermal surfaces, while the test section (consisting of Reaction Cured Glass tiles) was modeled as a partially catalytic radiative equilibrium wall. The results of the protuberance and baseline simulations were compared to the applicable ground test results, and the effects of the protuberance shock on the opposite channel wall were investigated
BLIMPK/Streamline Surface Catalytic Heating Predictions on the Space Shuttle Orbiter
This paper describes the results of an analysis of localized catalytic heating effects to the U.S. Space Shuttle Orbiter Thermal Protection System (TPS). The analysis applies to the High-temperature Reusable Surface Insulation (HRSI) on the lower fuselage and wing acreage, as well as the critical Reinforced Carbon-Carbon on the nose cap, chin panel and the wing leading edge. The object of the analysis was to use a modified two-layer approach to predict the catalytic heating effects on the Orbiter windward HRSI tile acreage, nose cap, and wing leading edge assuming localized highly catalytic or fully catalytic surfaces. The method incorporated the Boundary Layer Integral Matrix Procedure Kinetic (BLIMPK) code with streamline inputs from viscous Navier-Stokes solutions to produce heating rates for localized fully catalytic and highly catalytic surfaces as well as for nominal partially catalytic surfaces (either Reinforced Carbon-Carbon or Reaction Cured Glass) with temperature-dependent recombination coefficients. The highly catalytic heating results showed very good correlation with Orbiter Experiments STS-2, -3, and -5 centerline and STS-5 wing flight data for the HRSI tiles. Recommended catalytic heating factors were generated for use in future Shuttle missions in the event of quick-time analysis of damaged or repaired TPS areas during atmospheric reentry. The catalytic factors are presented along the streamlines as well as a function of stagnation enthalpy so they can be used for arbitrary trajectories
Gas and dust in the Beta Pictoris Moving Group as seen by the Herschel Space Observatory
Context. Debris discs are thought to be formed through the collisional
grinding of planetesimals, and can be considered as the outcome of planet
formation. Understanding the properties of gas and dust in debris discs can
help us to comprehend the architecture of extrasolar planetary systems.
Herschel Space Observatory far-infrared (IR) photometry and spectroscopy have
provided a valuable dataset for the study of debris discs gas and dust
composition. This paper is part of a series of papers devoted to the study of
Herschel PACS observations of young stellar associations.
Aims. This work aims at studying the properties of discs in the Beta Pictoris
Moving Group (BPMG) through far-IR PACS observations of dust and gas.
Methods. We obtained Herschel-PACS far-IR photometric observations at 70, 100
and 160 microns of 19 BPMG members, together with spectroscopic observations of
four of them. Spectroscopic observations were centred at 63.18 microns and 157
microns, aiming to detect [OI] and [CII] emission. We incorporated the new
far-IR observations in the SED of BPMG members and fitted modified blackbody
models to better characterise the dust content.
Results. We have detected far-IR excess emission toward nine BPMG members,
including the first detection of an IR excess toward HD 29391.The star HD
172555, shows [OI] emission, while HD 181296, shows [CII] emission, expanding
the short list of debris discs with a gas detection. No debris disc in BPMG is
detected in both [OI] and [CII]. The discs show dust temperatures in the range
55 to 264 K, with low dust masses (6.6*10^{-5} MEarth to 0.2 MEarth) and radii
from blackbody models in the range 3 to 82 AU. All the objects with a gas
detection are early spectral type stars with a hot dust component.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 6 table
Herschel PACS Observations and Modeling of Debris Disks in the Tucana-Horologium Association
We present Herschel PACS photometry of seventeen B- to M-type stars in the 30
Myr-old Tucana-Horologium Association. This work is part of the Herschel Open
Time Key Programme "Gas in Protoplanetary Systems" (GASPS). Six of the
seventeen targets were found to have infrared excesses significantly greater
than the expected stellar IR fluxes, including a previously unknown disk around
HD30051. These six debris disks were fitted with single-temperature blackbody
models to estimate the temperatures and abundances of the dust in the systems.
For the five stars that show excess emission in the Herschel PACS photometry
and also have Spitzer IRS spectra, we fit the data with models of optically
thin debris disks with realistic grain properties in order to better estimate
the disk parameters. The model is determined by a set of six parameters:
surface density index, grain size distribution index, minimum and maximum grain
sizes, and the inner and outer radii of the disk. The best fitting parameters
give us constraints on the geometry of the dust in these systems, as well as
lower limits to the total dust masses. The HD105 disk was further constrained

Exocomet signatures around the A-shell star Leo?
We present an intensive monitoring of high-resolution spectra of the Ca {\sc
ii} K line in the A7IV shell star Leo at very short (minutes, hours),
short (night to night), and medium (weeks, months) timescales. The spectra show
remarkable variable absorptions on timescales of hours, days, and months. The
characteristics of these sporadic events are very similar to most that are
observed toward the debris disk host star Pic, which are commonly
interpreted as signs of the evaporation of solid, comet-like bodies grazing or
falling onto the star. Therefore, our results suggest the presence of solid
bodies around Leo. To our knowledge, with the exception of Pic,
our monitoring has the best time resolution at the mentioned timescales for a
star with events attributed to exocomets. Assuming the cometary scenario and
considering the timescales of our monitoring, our results indicate that
Leo presents the richest environment with comet-like events known to date,
