Essere cittadino di una provincia non significa soltanto abitarvi. Significa anche lavorarvi, esercitarvi una attività che vada a vantaggio del benessere individuale e insieme del benessere della collettività .
Per fare questo, per raggiungere meglio questo obiettivo, la realtà in cui si vive e si lavora bisogna conoscerla meno superficialmente di quanto normalmente non succeda. E' una constatazione che si può fare per tutti coloro che abitano in un luogo, ma che si deve fare in modo particolare quando lo strumento di conoscenza che si propone è un libro come questo
Polyamines and ripening of photoreceptor outer-segment in chicken embryo.
Polyamines and their related monoacetyl derivatives were studied in rod outer segment (ROS) and cone outer segment (COS) of photoreceptor cells from chick embryo retina during eye development
(7th-18th days). Putrescine was found to be necessary, in the second phase of retinogenesis, to sustain both ROS and COS differentiation and, after acetylation, gamma-aminobutyric acid synthesis. On the Other hand, spermidine and even more spermine intervene in the third phase of development when photoreceptors mature. Moreover, the presence of Nl-acetylspermidine already at the 7th day indicates that in the outer segment of photoreceptor cells too, as in the whole retina, putrescine synthesis comes about by two pathways. One pathway involves ornithine decarboxylase; the other, spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase and FAD-dependent polyamine oxidase activities that convert spermidine to putrescine via N1-acetylspermidine. These different biosynthetic pathways are probably also decisive in permitting gamma-aminobutyric acid synthesis, which is very important in the ripening process of neural retina
Analysis of foreign matter in foodstuffs using the light filth test: report 2012-2013
The European legislation set the new hygiene standards in food chain with the purpose to ensure high levels of public health protection in relation to food production. In order to guarantee excellent hygiene standards in food chain, particular attention must be paid to the presence of foreign matter, like light solid impurities of mineral, vegetable or animal origin. The light filth test is a suitable method used to detect and count light solid impurities applicable to different foodstuffs. We report the results of the analysis of 93 foodstuffs official samples investigated for the presence of foreign matter at the Institute for Experimental Veterinary Medicine of Sardinia, from 2012 to 2013. Exome-wide sequencing and association analysis (ExWAS) in 75 K Pakistanis identified NM_000435.3(NOTCH3):c.3691 C > T, encoding the missense amino acid substitution p.Arg1231Cys, enriched in South Asians (alternate allele frequency = 0.58% compared to 0.019% in Western Europeans), and associated with subcortical hemorrhagic stroke [odds ratio (OR) = 3.39, 95% confidence interval (CI) = [2.26, 5.10], p = 3.87 × 10−9), and all strokes (OR [CI] = 2.30 [1.77, 3.01], p = 7.79 × 10−10). NOTCH3 p.Arg231Cys was strongly associated with white matter hyperintensity on MRI in United Kingdom Biobank (UKB) participants (effect [95% CI] in SD units = 1.1 [0.61, 1.5], p = 3.0 × 10−6). The variant is attributable for approximately 2.0% of hemorrhagic strokes and 1.1% of all strokes in South Asians. These findings highlight the value of diversity in genetic studies and have major implications for genomic medicine and therapeutic development in South Asian populations
