Infrared spectroscopy of phytochrome and model pigments
Fourier-transform infrared difference spectra between the red-absorbing and far-red-absorbing forms of oat phytochrome have been measured in H2O and 2H2O. The difference spectra are compared with infrared spectra of model compounds, i.e. the (5Z,10Z,15Z)- and (5Z,10Z,15E)-isomers of 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethyl-bilindion (Et8-bilindion), 2,3-dihydro-2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethyl-bilindion (H2Et8-bilindion), and protonated H2Et8-bilindion in various solvents. The spectra of the model compounds show that only for the protonated forms can clear differences between the two isomers be detected. Since considerable differences are present between the spectra of Et8-bilindion and H2Et8-bilindion, it is concluded that only the latter compound can serve as a model system of phytochrome. The 2H2O effect on the difference spectrum of phytochrome supports the view that the chromophore in red-absorbing phytochrome is protonated and suggests, in addition, that it is also protonated in far-red-absorbing phytochrome. The spectra show that protonated carboxyl groups are influenced. The small amplitudes in the difference spectra exclude major changes of protein secondary structure
Measurement of Forward Jets Produced in High-Transverse-Momentum Hadron-Proton Collisions
A measurement of charged-particle production is reported for the forward region in events triggered by high-transverse-momentum (pâ„) jets and single particles. The momentum distributions of forward-going particles are observed to scale in a simple pâ„-dependent longitudinal variable. Forward-going (beam) jets are observed to be tilted away from the original direction by an amount which agrees with muon-pair data when interpreted in a parton (quantum-chromodynamics) model
Jets Produced in Ï^-, Ï^+, and Proton Interactions at 200 GeV on Hydrogen and Aluminum Targets
This paper presents results from an experiment on the production of jets (groups of particles) with high p_â„ produced in 200-GeV/c interactions. Results are presented on the comparison of jet cross sections on aluminum and hydrogen targets. The jet fragmentation distributions are also examined. Both the cross section and the jet structure are found to depend strongly on the beam and target types
Observation of the Production of Jets of Particles at High Transverse Momentum and Comparison with Inclusive Single-Particle Reactions
Data are presented on production by 200-GeV/c hadrons incident on beryllium of both single particles and jets (groups of particles) with high p_T (transverse momentum). The experiment was performed in a wide-aperture multiparticle spectrometer at Fermilab. The jet and single-particle cross sections have a similar shape from p_T=3 to 5 GeV/c but the jet cross section is over two orders of magnitude larger. The distributions of charged-particle momenta show striking similarities to those observed in lepton-induced processes
Experimental Tests of Quantum Chromodynamics in High-p_â„ Jet Production in 200-GeV/c Hadron-Proton Collisions
Data on inclusive jet production in the transverse-momentum (p_â„) range 0-8 GeV/c for 200-GeV/c p, Ï^-, Ï^+, K^-, K^+, and p incident on a hydrogen target are presented. The jet cross section is fully corrected for losses and biases, and compared with the predictions of a model based on quantum chromodynamics. Both the absolute cross section and the inclusive charged-particle distributions inside and outside the jet are in qualitative agreement with the model

Mitochondrial calcium exchange links metabolism with the epigenome to control cellular differentiation.
Fibroblast to myofibroblast differentiation is crucial for the initial healing response but excessive myofibroblast activation leads to pathological fibrosis. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the mechanisms underlying myofibroblast formation. Here we report that mitochondrial calcium (mCa2+) signaling is a regulatory mechanism in myofibroblast differentiation and fibrosis. We demonstrate that fibrotic signaling alters gating of the mitochondrial calcium uniporter (mtCU) in a MICU1-dependent fashion to reduce mCa2+ uptake and induce coordinated changes in metabolism, i.e., increased glycolysis feeding anabolic pathways and glutaminolysis yielding increased α-ketoglutarate (αKG) bioavailability. mCa2+-dependent metabolic reprogramming leads to the activation of αKG-dependent histone demethylases, enhancing chromatin accessibility in loci specific to the myofibroblast gene program, resulting in differentiation. Our results uncover an important role for the mtCU beyond metabolic regulation and cell death and demonstrate that mCa2+ signaling regulates the epigenome to influence cellular differentiation
Origin of reduced magnetization and domain formation in small magnetite nanoparticles
The structural, chemical, and magnetic properties of magnetite nanoparticles are compared. Aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals the prevalence of antiphase boundaries in nanoparticles that have significantly reduced magnetization, relative to the bulk. Atomistic magnetic modelling of nanoparticles with and without these defects reveals the origin of the reduced moment. Strong antiferromagnetic interactions across antiphase boundaries support multiple magnetic domains even in particles as small as 12â14ânm
All-Photonic Multifunctional Molecular Logic Device
Photochromes are photoswitchable, bistable chromophores which, like transistors, can implement binary logic operations. When several photochromes are combined in one molecule, interactions between them such as energy and electron transfer allow design of simple Boolean logic gates and more complex logic devices with all-photonic inputs and outputs. Selective isomerization of individual photochromes can be achieved using light of different wavelengths, and logic outputs can employ absorption and emission properties at different wavelengths, thus allowing a single molecular species to perform several different functions, even simultaneously. Here, we report a molecule consisting of three linked photochromes that can be configured as AND, XOR, INH, half-adder, half-subtractor, multiplexer, demultiplexer, encoder, decoder, keypad lock, and logically reversible transfer gate logic devices, all with a common initial state. The system demonstrates the advantages of light-responsive molecules as multifunctional, reconfigurable nanoscale logic devices that represent an approach to true molecular information processing units
Evidence for Neutrino Oscillations from Muon Decay at Rest
A search for nu_bar_mu to nu_bar_e oscillations has been conducted at the Los
Alamos Meson Physics Facility using nu_bar_mu from mu+ decay at rest. The
nu_bar_e are detected via the reaction (nu_bar_e,p) -> (e+,n), correlated with
the 2.2 MeV gamma from (n,p) -> (d,gamma). The use of tight cuts to identify e+
events with correlated gamma rays yields 22 events with e+ energy between 36
and 60 MeV and only 4.6 (+/- 0.6) background events. The probability that this
excess is due entirely to a statistical fluctuation is 4.1E-08. A chi^2 fit to
the entire e+ sample results in a total excess of 51.8 (+18.7) (-16.9) (+/-
8.0) events with e+ energy between 20 and 60 MeV. If attributed to nu_bar_mu ->
nu_bar_e oscillations, this corresponds to an oscillation probability (averaged
over the experimental energy and spatial acceptance) of 0.0031 (+0.0011)
(-0.0010) (+/- 0.0005).Comment: 57 pages, 34 figures, revtex, additional information available at
