The application of tailor-made force fields and molecular dynamics for NMR crystallography: a case study of free base cocaine
Motional averaging has been proven to be significant in predicting the chemical shifts in ab initio solid-state NMR calculations, and the applicability of motional averaging with molecular dynamics has been shown to depend on the accuracy of the molecular mechanical force field. The performance of a fully automatically generated tailor-made force field (TMFF) for the dynamic aspects of NMR crystallography is evaluated and compared with existing benchmarks, including static dispersion-corrected density functional theory calculations and the COMPASS force field. The crystal structure of free base cocaine is used as an example. The results reveal that, even though the TMFF outperforms the COMPASS force field for representing the energies and conformations of predicted structures, it does not give significant improvement in the accuracy of NMR calculations. Further studies should direct more attention to anisotropic chemical shifts and development of the method of solid-state NMR calculations
Relative "-Numerical Ranges for Applications in Quantum Control and Quantum Information
Motivated by applications in quantum information and quantum control, a new
type of "-numerical range, the relative "-numerical range denoted
, is introduced. It arises upon replacing the unitary group U(N) in
the definition of the classical "-numerical range by any of its compact and
connected subgroups .
The geometric properties of the relative "-numerical range are analysed in
detail. Counterexamples prove its geometry is more intricate than in the
classical case: e.g. is neither star-shaped nor simply-connected.
Yet, a well-known result on the rotational symmetry of the classical
"-numerical range extends to , as shown by a new approach based on
Lie theory. Furthermore, we concentrate on the subgroup , i.e. the -fold tensor product of SU(2),
which is of particular interest in applications. In this case, sufficient
conditions are derived for being a circular disc centered at
origin of the complex plane. Finally, the previous results are illustrated in
detail for .Comment: accompanying paper to math-ph/070103
Detecting level crossings without looking at the spectrum
In many physical systems it is important to be aware of the crossings and
avoided crossings which occur when eigenvalues of a physical observable are
varied using an external parameter. We have discovered a powerful algebraic
method of finding such crossings via a mapping to the problem of locating the
roots of a polynomial in that parameter. We demonstrate our method on atoms and
molecules in a magnetic field, where it has implications in the search for
Feshbach resonances. In the atomic case our method allows us to point out a new
class of invariants of the Breit-Rabi Hamiltonian of magnetic resonance. In the
case of molecules, it enables us to find curve crossings with practically no
knowledge of the corresponding Born-Oppenheimer potentials.Comment: 4 pages, new title, no figures, accepted by Phys. Rev. Let
Reliable and Practical Computational Prediction of Molecular Crystal Polymorphs
The ability to reliably predict the structures and stabilities of a molecular
crystal and its polymorphs without any prior experimental information would be
an invaluable tool for a number of fields, with specific and immediate
applications in the design and formulation of pharmaceuticals. In this case,
detailed knowledge of the polymorphic energy landscape for an active
pharmaceutical ingredient yields profound insight regarding the existence and
likelihood of late-appearing polymorphs. However, the computational prediction
of the structures and stabilities of molecular crystal polymorphs is
particularly challenging due to the high dimensionality of conformational and
crystallographic space accompanied by the need for relative (free) energies to
within 1 kJ/mol per molecule. In this work, we combine the most
successful crystal structure sampling strategy with the most accurate energy
ranking strategy of the latest blind test of organic crystal structure
prediction (CSP), organized by the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre
(CCDC). Our final energy ranking is based on first-principles density
functional theory (DFT) calculations that include three key physical
contributions: (i) a sophisticated treatment of Pauli exchange-repulsion and
electron correlation effects with hybrid functionals, (ii) inclusion of
many-body van der Waals dispersion interactions, and (iii) account of
vibrational free energies. In doing so, this combined approach has an optimal
success rate in producing the crystal structures corresponding to the five
blind-test molecules. With this practical approach, we demonstrate the
feasibility of obtaining reliable structures and stabilities for molecular
crystals of pharmaceutical importance, paving the way towards an enhanced
fundamental understanding of polymorphic energy landscapes and routine
industrial application of molecular CSP methods
Energy Level Quasi-Crossings: Accidental Degeneracies or Signature of Quantum Chaos?
In the field of quantum chaos, the study of energy levels plays an important
role. The aim of this review paper is to critically discuss some of the main
contributions regarding the connection between classical dynamics,
semi-classical quantization and spectral statistics of energy levels. In
particular, we analyze in detail degeneracies and quasi-crossings in the
eigenvalues of quantum Hamiltonians which are classically non-integrable.

Scattering properties of a cut-circle billiard waveguide with two conical leads
We examine a two-dimensional electron waveguide with a cut-circle cavity and
conical leads. By considering Wigner delay times and the Landauer-B\"{u}ttiker
conductance for this system, we probe the effects of the closed billiard energy
spectrum on scattering properties in the limit of weakly coupled leads. We
investigate how lead placement and cavity shape affect these conductance and
time delay spectra of the waveguide.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. E (Jan.
