    Polarization dependent Brillouin gain in randomly birefringent fibers

    An extensive study of the alignment between the pump, the signal and the polarization dependent gain (PDG) vectors in stimulated Brillouin amplification in randomly birefringent fibers is realized by numerically integrating the equations governing the propagation. At the fiber output, the signal tends to align to the PDG vector for large pump power because of the nonlinear polarization pulling effect. The PDG vector, for large random birefringence, aligns to a state that has the same linear component of the pump but opposite circular component.Comment: 3 pages submitted to IEEE Photonics Technology Letter

    Phase-Sensitive Mode Conversion and Equalization in a Few Mode Fiber Through Parametric Interactions

    The parametric interaction in few mode fibers is theoretically and numerically studied in the particular case in which the signal and the idler waves are frequency degenerate but mode nondegenerate. Under simplifying hypotheses, we derive analytical formulas for the phase-insensitive and phase-sensitive amplification gain and conversion efficiency. The analytical formulas are in very good agreement with the numerical solutions of a full vectorial model that takes into account losses, mode coupling, and all possible four-wave mixing interactions. In the phase-sensitive regime, we predict that for small input pump powers, a large and tunable phase-sensitive extinction ratio can be achieved on one mode, whereas the other mode power remains essentially unaffected. Finally, in the high-gain regime, the self-equalization of the output power on different modes can be also achieved

    Malacological Remains from the 2011-2016 Excavations at Khashuri Natsargora and Aradetis Orgora (Shida Kartli Region, Georgia, Southern Caucasus)

    L’articolo discute i resti malacologici rinvenuti a Khashuri Natsargora e Aradetis Orgora, due siti dell’Età del Bronzo/Ferro nel bacino del Kura nella provincia georgiana di Shida Kartli (Caucaso Meridionale). Il corpus consiste in più di 500 esemplari ed include specie sia di terra che d’acqua dolce (queste ultime soprattutto per Aradetis Orgora), mentre le specie marine rappresentano una porzione estremamente marginale del totale. Il record, ottenuto attraverso la raccolta diretta in corso di scavo, include solo le specie con la conchiglia più resistente e di maggiori dimensioni, più riconoscibili ad occhio nudo e quindi rappresenta solo una parte degli inventari malacologici pertinenti alle sequenze stratigrafiche investigate. Nonostante questi limiti obiettivi, si è ritenuto opportuno presentare i dati raccolti e i risultati della loro analisi, che hanno permesso di ottenere informazioni di tipo paleoecologico e paleoeconomico non prive di interesse. L’analisi dei resti disponibili mostra una chiara predominanza di specie connesse con ambienti aperti e xerici, in sostanziale accordo sia con l’ambiente locale attuale che con i pochi dati paleoambientali disponibili. La debole variazione diacronica della composizione degli inventari suggerisce una sostanziale stabilità ecologica per entrambi i biotopi. L’abbondanza di molluschi d’acqua dolce ad Aradetis Orgora può essere spiegata con la prossimità del sito ai fiumi Prone e Kura, biotopi dai quali essi potrebbero essere stati raccolti intenzionalmente a scopi alimentari, come potrebbero suggerire alcuni paralleli da altre società dell’Età del Bronzo.The paper discusses the malacological remains recovered at Khashuri Natsargora and Aradetis Orgora, two Bronze Age/Iron Age sites located in the Kura River basin of the Shida Kartli province of Georgia (Southern Caucasus). The corpus consists of over 500 items, which include both land and (especially for Aradetis Orgora) freshwater species, while marine species represent an extremely marginal portion of the total. In both cases a clear dominance of species connected with open and xeric environments can be observed, in substantial agreement both with the present local environment and with the little available palaeoenvironmental data. The record is characterised by a scarce variety of species and shows very weak diachronic variability, which suggests a substantial ecological stability for both biotopes. The abundance of freshwater molluscs at Aradetis Orgora can be explained by the proximinity of the site to the Prone and Kura rivers

    The words of the body: psychophysiological patterns in dissociative narratives

    Trauma has severe consequences on both psychological and somatic levels, even affecting the genetic expression and the cell\u2019s DNA repair ability. A key mechanism in the understanding of clinical disorders deriving from trauma is identified in dissociation, as a primitive defense against the fragmentation of the self originated by overwhelming experiences. The dysregulation of the interpersonal patterns due to the traumatic experience and its detrimental effects on the body are supported by influent neuroscientific models such as Damasio\u2019s somatic markers and Porges\u2019 polyvagal theory. On the basis of these premises, and supported by our previous empirical observations on 40 simulated clinical sessions, we will discuss the longitudinal process of a brief psychodynamic psychotherapy (16 sessions, weekly frequency) with a patient who suffered a relational trauma. The research design consists of the collection of self-report and projective tests, pre-post therapy and after each clinical session, in order to assess personality, empathy, clinical alliance and clinical progress, along with the verbatim analysis of the transcripts trough the Psychotherapy Process Q-Set and the Collaborative Interactions Scale. Furthermore, we collected simultaneous psychophysiological measures of the therapeutic dyad: skin conductance and hearth rate. Lastly, we employed a computerized analysis of non-verbal behaviors to assess synchrony in posture and gestures. These automated measures are able to highlight moments of affective concordance and discordance, allowing for a deep understanding of the mutual regulations between the patient and the therapist. Preliminary results showed that psychophysiological changes in dyadic synchrony, observed in body movements, skin conductance and hearth rate, occurred within sessions during the discussion of traumatic experiences, with levels of attunement that changed in both therapist and the patient depending on the quality of the emotional representation of the experience. These results go in the direction of understanding the relational process in trauma therapy, using an integrative language in which both clinical and neurophysiological knowledge may take advantage of each other

    Potential use of human periapical cyst-mesenchymal stem cells (hPCy-MSCs) as a novel stem cell source for regenerative medicine applications

    Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are attracting growing interest by the scientific community due to their huge regenerative potential. Thus, the plasticity of MSCs strongly suggests the utilization of these cells for regenerative medicine applications. The main issue about the clinical use of MSCs is related to the complex way to obtain them from healthy tissues; this topic has encouraged scientists to search for novel and more advantageous sources of these cells in easily accessible tissues. The oral cavity hosts several cell populations expressing mesenchymal stem cell like-features, furthermore, the access to oral and dental tissues is simple and isolation of cells is very efficient. Thus, oral-derived stem cells are highly attractive for clinical purposes. In this context, human periapical cyst mesenchymal stem cells (hPCy-MSCs) exhibit characteristics similar to other dental-derived MSCs, including their extensive proliferative potential, cell surface marker profile and the ability to differentiate into various cell types such as osteoblasts, adipocytes and neurons. Importantly, hPCy-MSCs are easily collected from the surgically removed periapical cysts; this reusing of biological waste guarantees a smart source of stem cells without any impact on the surrounding healthy tissues. In this review, we report the most interesting research topics related to hPCy-MSCs with a newsworthy discussion about the future insights. This newly discovered cell population exhibits interesting and valuable potentialities that could be of high impact in the future regenerative medicine applications
