Development of the self-calibration technique for γ -ray energy tracking arrays
Determining the three-dimensional γ -ray interaction position in γ -ray tracking arrays is achieved by comparing in real time the measured electronic signals against a pre-generated library of calculated signals (signal basis) that maps the detector response throughout the crystal volume. Obtaining a high-fidelity signal basis remains a significant technological challenge that often limits the ultimate performance of the arrays. To address this, a self-calibration method was proposed to generate the signal basis experimentally, in an iterative way and in situ; its potential has been demonstrated in a proof-of-concept study using a simplistic geometry. In this article, we extend and refine this innovative technique for γ -ray tracking arrays using realistic simulations of the actual crystal geometries and including pulse-shape analysis that mimics the reconstruction that takes place experimentally. Key factors determining the performance of the method, such as the conditions for position convergence, statistical requirements, the impact of convoluting electronic noise to the signals, and the time alignment are investigated systematically within this framework. The results show that the method is robust and holds promise for generating high-fidelity signal basis experimentally. The analysis framework established in this work sets the stage for applying the self-calibration technique to real experimental data
Coulomb dissociation of 20,21N
Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role in the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on N20,21 are reported. Relativistic N20,21 ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the N19(n,γ)N20 and N20(n,γ)N21 excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. The N19(n,γ)N20 rate is up to a factor of 5 higher at T<1GK with respect to previous theoretical calculations, leading to a 10% decrease in the predicted fluorine abundance
Lifetime measurements of excited states in ¹⁶³W and the implications for the anomalous B(E2) ratios in transitional nuclei
This letter reports lifetime measurements of excited states in the odd-N nucleus 163W using the recoil-distance Doppler shift method to probe the core polarising effect of the i13/2 neutron orbital on the underlying soft triaxial even-even core. The ratio B(E2:21/2⁺ → 17/2⁺)/B(E2:17/2⁺ → 13/2⁺) is consistent with the predictions of the collective rotational model. The deduced B(E2) values provide insights into the validity of collective model predictions for heavy transitional nuclei and a geometric origin for the anomalous B(E2) ratios observed in nearby even-even nuclei is proposed
