A constrained supersymmetric left-right model
We present a supersymmetric left-right model which predicts gauge coupling
unification close to the string scale and extra vector bosons at the TeV scale.
The subtleties in constructing a model which is in agreement with the measured
quark masses and mixing for such a low left-right breaking scale are discussed.
It is shown that in the constrained version of this model radiative breaking of
the gauge symmetries is possible and a SM-like Higgs is obtained. Additional
CP-even scalars of a similar mass or even much lighter are possible. The
expected mass hierarchies for the supersymmetric states differ clearly from
those of the constrained MSSM. In particular, the lightest down-type squark,
which is a mixture of the sbottom and extra vector-like states, is always
lighter than the stop. We also comment on the model's capability to explain
current anomalies observed at the LHC.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures; v2: references added, matches published versio
Towards an understanding of hole superconductivity
From the very beginning K. Alex M\"uller emphasized that the materials he and
George Bednorz discovered in 1986 were superconductors. Here I would
like to share with him and others what I believe to be key reason for why
high cuprates as well as all other superconductors are hole
superconductors, which I only came to understand a few months ago. This paper
is dedicated to Alex M\"uller on the occasion of his 90th birthday.Comment: Dedicated to Alex M\"uller on the Occasion of his 90th Birthday.

COBRA - Double beta decay searches using CdTe detectors
A new approach (called COBRA) for investigating double beta decay using CdTe
(CdZnTe) semiconductor detectors is proposed. It follows the idea that source
and detector are identical. This will allow simultaneous measurements of 5
- and 4 - emitters at once. Half-life limits
for neutrinoless double beta decay of Cd-116 and Te-130 can be improved by more
than one order of magnitude with respect to current limits and sensitivities on
the effective Majorana neutrino mass of less than 1 eV can be obtained.
Furthermore, for the first time a realistic chance of observing double electron
capture processes exists. Additional searches for rare processes like the
4-fold forbidden Cd-113 -decay, the electron capture of Te-123 and dark
matter detection can be performed. The achievable limits are evaluated for 10
kg of such detectors and can be scaled accordingly towards higher detector
masses because of the modular design of the proposed experiment.Comment: 13 pages, 3 eps-figures, submitte
Sulfanilic acid-modified chitosan mini-spheres and their application for lysozyme purification from egg white
A cation exchange matrix with zwitterionic and multimodal properties was synthesized by a simple reaction sequence coupling sulfanilic acid to a chitosan based support. The novel chromatographic matrix was physico-chemically characterized by ss-NMR and ζ potential, and its chromatographic performance was evaluated for lysozyme purification from diluted egg white. The maximum adsorption capacity, calculated according to Langmuir adsorption isotherm, was 50.07 ± 1.47 mg g-1 while the dissociation constant was 0.074 ± 0.012 mg mL-1 . The process for lysozyme purification from egg white was optimized, with 81.9% yield and a purity degree of 86.5%, according to RP-HPLC analysis. This work shows novel possible applications of chitosan based materials. The simple synthesis reactions combined with the simple mode of use of the chitosan matrix represents a novel method to purify proteins from raw starting materials.Fil: Hirsch, Daniela Belén. Does experience matter? Assessing user motivations to accept a vehicle-to-grid charging tariff
Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) could be a cornerstone to ensure the efficient integration of a large number of electric vehicles (EVs) and the resulting electricity demand into the energy system. However, successful V2G adoption requires direct interaction with the EV user. To explore user preferences and requirements in the context of a V2G charging tariff, we conducted a survey (N = 1196). We assess users’ minimum range requirements and willingness to pay for a V2G charging tariff and relate them to users’ experience with EVs. By building a mediation model, we evaluate the importance of three charging strategies to guide users’ minimum range requirements and expected monetary savings. The results reveal EV owners’ preference for a climate-neutral charging strategy, leading to a higher readiness to accept lower minimum ranges and lower monetary savings. These results are especially important to aggregators, aiming to design profitable business models, while accounting for user requirements and preferences
LiveDewStream: A stream processing platform for running in-lab distributed deep learning inferences on smartphone clusters at the edge
Dew computing, an evolution of Fog computing, aims at fulfilling computing needs, such as deep learning applied to object classification, close to where data is originated and using computing resources that include consumer electronic devices such as smartphones. Simulation tools like DewSim aid the study of resource allocation mechanisms for exploiting clusters of smartphones, however, there is a gap w.r.t software tools that allow to perform similar studies over real Dew computing testbeds. We have developed LiveDewStream, an open source project to model executable tasks derived from data streams to be run on real smartphone clusters. The project offers a key functionality missing in other tools: reproducibility of battery-driven Dew experiments. Our major contribution is to provide the community a common in vivo platform to study best-performing allocation mechanisms under different stream processing scenarios and/or deep learning inference models.Fil: Mateos Diaz, Cristian Maximiliano. Statistical Wiring of Thalamic Receptive Fields Optimizes Spatial Sampling of the Retinal Image
SummaryIt is widely assumed that mosaics of retinal ganglion cells establish the optimal representation of visual space. However, relay cells in the visual thalamus often receive convergent input from several retinal afferents and, in cat, outnumber ganglion cells. To explore how the thalamus transforms the retinal image, we built a model of the retinothalamic circuit using experimental data and simple wiring rules. The model shows how the thalamus might form a resampled map of visual space with the potential to facilitate detection of stimulus position in the presence of sensor noise. Bayesian decoding conducted with the model provides support for this scenario. Despite its benefits, however, resampling introduces image blur, thus impairing edge perception. Whole-cell recordings obtained in vivo suggest that this problem is mitigated by arrangements of excitation and inhibition within the receptive field that effectively boost contrast borders, much like strategies used in digital image processing
Immune Reconstitution in HIV-Infected Patients
The prognosis of patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 has dramatically improved since the advent of potent antiretroviral therapies (ARTs), which have enabled sustained suppression of HIV replication and recovery of CD4 T cell counts. Knowledge of the function of CD4 T cells in immune reconstitution was derived from large clinical studies demonstrating that primary and secondary prophylaxis against infectious agents, such as Pneumocystis jirovecii (Pneumocystis carinii), Mycobacterium avium complex, cytomegalovirus, and other pathogens, can be discontinued safely once CD4 T cell counts have increased beyond pathogen-specific threshold levels (usually >200 CD4 T cells/mm3) for 3-6 months. The downside of immune reconstitution is an inflammatory syndrome occurring days to months after the start of ART, with outcomes ranging from minimal morbidity to fatal progression. This syndrome can be elicited by infectious and noninfectious antigens. Microbiologically, the possible pathogenic pathways involve recognition of antigens associated with ongoing infection or recognition of persisting antigens associated with past (nonreplicating) infection. Specific antimicrobial therapy, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and/or steroids for managing immune reconstitution syndrome should be considere
Motrol: A hardware-software device for batch benchmarking and profiling of in-lab mobile device clusters
Motrol is a simple device that satisfies functional requirements necessary for the automatic execution of battery-driven tests and profiling of connected mobile devices. It is specifically a hardware/software platform that allows Dew Computing researchers and developers to automate performance tests on Android-based smartphones. The hardware is based on a NodeMCU Esp8266 microcontroller that runs a firmware for managing the outputs. This software allows enabling/disabling the relays that connect the sockets that power the chargers of up to 4 mobile devices minimizing the need for human intervention. The firmware runs a web server that serves Rest requests from a Rest client with the commands to drive the digital outputs. These digital outputs activate or deactivate the relays to allow current to pass or not to the sockets. Such capability is essential to automate the study of battery behavior on battery-driven devices such as smartphones. Motrol is easy to assemble, knowledge in electronics or programming languages is not necessary, it is constructed with open hardware, and it is cheap, being its total cost ∼USD 30.Fil: Toloza, Juan Manuel.
