    Isotope effect in quasi-two-dimensional metal-organic antiferromagnets

    Although the isotope effect in superconducting materials is well-documented, changes in the magnetic properties of antiferromagnets due to isotopic substitution are seldom discussed and remain poorly understood. This is perhaps surprising given the possible link between the quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases of the layered cuprates. Here we report the experimental observation of shifts in the N\'{e}el temperature and critical magnetic fields (ΔTN/TN≈4\Delta T_{\rm N}/T_{\rm N}\approx 4%; ΔBc/Bc≈4\Delta B_{\rm c}/B_{\rm c}\approx 4%) in a Q2D organic molecular antiferromagnets on substitution of hydrogen for deuterium. These compounds are characterized by strong hydrogen bonds through which the dominant superexchange is mediated. We evaluate how the in-plane and inter-plane exchange energies evolve as the hydrogens on different ligands are substituted, and suggest a possible mechanism for this effect in terms of the relative exchange efficiency of hydrogen and deuterium bonds

    Gene expression changes during murine postnatal brain development

    BACKGROUND: For most vertebrate organs and tissues, the majority of development occurs during embryogenesis, and postnatal changes are primarily concerned with growth. The central nervous system is unusual in that a considerable amount of morphological development, cell differentiation and acquisition of function, takes place during postnatal development. As yet, the molecular mechanisms underlying these complex developmental processes are not well understood. In order to identify markers for these developmental processes, we have analyzed the expression profiles, during postnatal murine brain development, of approximately 25,000 transcripts. This analysis, performed at day 1, day 10, day 20 and day 42 of postnatal development, identified a large number of developmentally regulated genes which we have assigned into three broad expression categories. RESULTS: Expression levels at four timepoints during postnatal murine brain development were established for approximately 25,000 gene transcripts. Approximately 1% of the genes examined displayed a developmentally regulated pattern of expression and we provide all the necessary information required to easily obtain molecular markers for a subset of these developmentally regulated transcripts. Of this subset, 61 showed increasing expression during development, 61 showed decreasing expression during development, and 9 exhibited a peak of expression during this period. CONCLUSIONS: A small percentage of the genes expressed in the postnatal developing brain show changes in expression level during the newborn to adult phase of development. It is likely that these developmentally regulated transcripts represent molecular markers for the complex developmental process occurring in the postnatal brain

    Zonal mean and tidal dynamics from space: An empirical examination of aliasing and sampling issues

    Interpretations of space-based measurements of atmospheric parameters in the mesosphere and thermosphere are complicated by large local-time variations at these altitudes. For this reason, satellite orbits are often preferred which precess through all local times one or more times per season. However, the local-time structure of the atmosphere is inherently non-stationary, which can lead to sampling and aliasing difficulties when attempting to deconvolve the measurements into zonal mean and tidal components. In the present study, hourly radar measurements of mesopause-region winds are used to form a mock data base which can be used to gain insight into implications of the aforementioned problems; the use of actual measurements introduces a realistic element of geophysical temporal variability. Assuming zonal symmetry (i.e., migrating tides superimposed on a zonal mean circulation), the radar measurements are sampled from the satellite perspective for orbital inclinations of 57° and 70°, and compared to the ground or true perspective. These comparisons provide realistic estimates of the errors to be expected when attempting to derive mean and tidal components from space-based measurements. For both diurnal and semidiurnal components, and the quoted satellite inclinations, acceptable errors (3–4m/srms) are obtained for data covering 24h local time (i.e., ascending plus descending nodes); the corresponding errors for single-node data (12h local-time coverage) are of order 8–11m/s, and therefore may not represent reliable estimates of the actual tidal components.     Magnetic properties of the S=1/2 quasi square lattice antiferromagnet CuF2(H2O)2(pyz) (pyz=pyrazine) investigated by neutron scattering

    We have performed elastic and inelastic neutron experiments on single crystal samples of the coordination polymer compound CuF2(H2O)2(pyz) (pyz=pyrazine) to study the magnetic structure and excitations. The elastic neutron diffraction measurements indicate a collinear antiferromagnetic structure with moments oriented along the [0.7 0 1] real-space direction and an ordered moment of 0.60 +/- 0.03 muB/Cu. This value is significantly smaller than the single ion magnetic moment, reflecting the presence of strong quantum fluctuations. The spin wave dispersion from magnetic zone center to the zone boundary points (0.5 1.5 0) and (0.5 0 1.5) can be described by a two dimensional Heisenberg model with a nearest neighbor magnetic exchange constant J2d = 0.934 +/-0.0025 meV. The inter-layer interaction Jperp in this compound is less than 1.5% of J2d. The spin excitation energy at the (0.5 0.5 0.5) zone boundary point is reduced when compared to the (0.5 1 0.5) zone boundary point by ~10.3 +/- 1.4 %. This zone boundary dispersion is consistent with quantum Monte Carlo and series expansion calculations which include corrections for quantum fluctuations to linear spin wave theory.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Unusual magnetic-field dependence of partially frustrated triangular ordering in manganese tricyanomethanide

    Manganese tricyanomethanide, Mn[C(CN)3]2, consists of two interpenetrating three-dimensional rutile-like networks. In each network, the tridentate C(CN)3- anion gives rise to superexchange interactions between the Mn2+ ions (S=5/2) that can be mapped onto the "row model" for partially frustrated triangular magnets. We present heat capacity measurements that reveal a phase transition at T_N = 1.18K, indicative of magnetic ordering. The zero-field magnetically ordered structure was solved from neutron powder diffraction data taken between 0.04 and 1.2 K. It consists of an incommensurate spiral with a temperature independent propagation vector Q=(2Q 0 0)=(+/-0.622 0 0), where different signs relate to the two different networks. This corresponds to (+/-0.311 +/-0.311 0) in a quasi-hexagonal representation. The ordered moment mu=3.3mu_B is about 2/3 of the full Mn2+ moment. From the values of T_N and Q, the exchange parameters J/k = 0.15 K and J'/J = 0.749 are estimated. The magnetic-field dependence of the intensity of the Bragg reflection, measured for external fields H||Q, indicates the presence of three different magnetic phases. We associate them with the incommensurate spiral (H < 13.5 kOe), an intermediate phase (13.5 kOe 16 kOe) proposed for related compounds. For increasing fields, Q continuously approaches the value 1/3, corresponding to the commensurate magnetic structure of the fully frustrated triangular lattice. This value is reached at H_c = 19 kOe. At this point, the field-dependence reverses and Q adopts a value of 0.327 at 26 kOe, the highest field applied in the experiment. Except for H_c, the magnetic ordering is incommensurate in all three magnetic phases of Mn[C(CN)3]2.Comment: accepted for publication in J. Phys.: Condens. Matte

    The Pharmacokinetics of The Biliary Excretion of Ciprofloxacin

    The pharmacokinetics of ciprofloxacin excretion have been studied in 54 patients undergoing biliary and pancreatic operations with and without obstruction of the common bile duct. High concentrations were achieved in common duct bile within 20 minutes of intravenous injection and persisted for over 3 hours after 100 mg and for over 8 hours after 200 mg. The concentration of ciprofloxacin in the bile of functioning gall bladders was much greater than that in the common duct bile. Remarkably, it was identified in therapeutic concentrations in the bile of obstructed ducts. This and the rapid fall from initially high venous concentrations probably reflect diffusion from the circulation as a result of the exceptional tissue penetration. A unique feature of this study was the finding of clinically significant concentrations in the bile of obstructed ducts
