    The paper deals with bio-compounds preservation in soft fruits during storage in order to allow their consumption in off-season. The work addresses sweet cherries, the most popular consumed fruits in countries across the temperate regions like Romania, which the consumer can enjoy only in May-July period. Consequently, the aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of storage conditions on the yield of biologically active compounds. In this respect, the content of total phenols and flavonoids, and free radical scavenging activity have been analyzed in order to enable consumers to choose the most efficient storage method. The best characteristics cultivar offering the potential prospects for growers is also highlighted. Sweet cherries provided by ‘New Star’, ‘Celeste’ and ‘Giant Red’ cultivars were stored for 7 days in refrigerated and freezing conditionsand then subjected to the extraction method with hydrochloric acid in methanol. Using Folin-Ciocâlteu method total phenols content of the extracts was determined. The flavonoid content was identified using an adapted method based on rutin as reference sample. The free radical scavenging activity(EC50)of the extracts was determined using stabile 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical. The results showed that high phenols and flavonoids contents are in ‘N Star’ cultivar (0.144 g in fresh fruits and 0.129 g refrigerated ones) while the free radical scavenging activity is better conserved in frozen fruits from ‘Celeste’ cultivar (5.94 mg/mL)

    Ragweed and birthwort - antimicrobial evaluation

    Due to continuous increasing concerns regarding the use of synthetic products in almost all industries, the scientific world puts more and more attention on ecofriendly solutions in several areas like agriculture, pharmacology or foods and feeds. In this context, this article is focused on the use of two indigenous plants, Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. (ragweed) and Aristolochia clematitis L. (birthwort) from Romanian spontaneous flora in order to identify several possible applications in agricultural sector and also in pharmaceutical industry. The aim of the experiments was to characterize the biochemical content of Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. and Aristolochia clematitis L. extracts and to evaluate their influence on the development of several microorganisms. The ragweed and birthwort extracts were tested in three concentrations antimicrobial activity. The microorganisms used were Bacillus cereus, Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. Only the activity of the microorganisms belonging to Bacillus spp. was affected by the extracts. The strongest influence was attributed to the extract from birthwort with the highest concentration and the susceptibility was directly proportional with the concentration. Compared with birthwort, the influence of the ragweed extracts was reduced and the most efficient concentration was not the highest one

    Analysis of Some Phenolic Compounds and Free Radical Scavenging Activity of Strawberry Fruits During Storage Period

    AbstractThe objective of this study was to evaluate the quantity of some phenolic compounds and free radical scavenging activity of strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) during storage period at different temperatures. Freshly harvested of three strawberry cultivars fruits (‘San Andreas’, ‘Benicia’ and ‘Albion’) were placed in polyethylene bags and kept in refrigerated (4°C) and frozen (-85°C) conditions for 7 days. Therefore, the analyses performed were applied on the fruits in stages: fresh, refrigerated and frozen. With regard to the bio compounds analysis, we mention: total phenolic content (TPC) expressed as g gallic acid equivalents (GAE), total flavonoid content (TFC) expressed as g of rutin equivalents (RE), and free radical scavenging activity expressed as 50% effective concentration (EC50) (mg/ml). With regard to the TPC in all analyzed storage stages have revealed ‘San Andreas’ cultivar with a maximum content of 0.326g GAE / 100g fresh weight (FW). Also, the same cultivar recorded high levels of total flavonoid content of 0.424g RE / 100g FW, all at the end of refrigeration period. In terms of free radical scavenging activity, ‘Benicia’ cultivar highlighted the best results EC50 = 3.094mg/ml

    MRI Evolution of a Patient with Viral Tick-Borne Encephalitis and Polymorphic Seizures

    Some neurotropic viruses induce specific lesions in the deep structures, such as basal ganglia and thalamus. These anatomical structures play an important role in initiating and maintaining different types of epileptic seizures. We present the case of a 25-year-old male, transferred to our clinic one week after the onset of the symptomatology, with a recent history of traveling to Turkey and Egypt. At the moment of his hospital admission, his symptoms included altered consciousness, agitation, and seizures. Shortly after, his state worsened, requiring intubation. Viral tick-borne encephalitis diagnoses were favored by the CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) analysis, EEG (Electroencephalography), MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) images presenting symmetric hyper signal in the basal ganglia, and IgM antibodies for anti-tick-borne encephalitis. These lesions persisted for several weeks, and the patient’s seizures were polymorphic, originally generalized onset motor, generalized onset non-motor, and focal myoclonic. The patient achieved his independence, seizures decreasing both in intensity and frequency; the MRI images became almost normal. The reduction in antiepileptic doses was not followed by seizure recurrence

    New Imaging Features of Multinodular and Vacuolating Neuronal Tumor Revealed by Alcohol and Illicit Drugs Consumption

    It has been almost a decade since the multinodular and vacuolating neuronal tumor (MVNT) was first described. In 2021, WHO classified it as a defined entity, and it is considered one of the glioneuronal and neuronal tumors. Due to its similarities with dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNET), some authors consider it a variant of these, ranking in the category of malformations, but genetic alterations favor a neoplastic origin. We present a 29-year-old male with a generalized onset tonic-clonic seizure after a nightclub party. Imaging studies revealed a right temporal multinodular and vacuolating neuronal tumor confirmed by biopsy. It is considered a nonaggressive, “leave me alone” brain lesion, which does not require biopsy because of well-defined MRI characteristics. Surgery is indicated only in symptomatic cases. We consider that this lesion was revealed by his seizure, most probably provoked (with normal video EEG recording) by the consumption of a lot of alcohol, illicit drugs, and sleep loss after a club party. We recommended close monitoring, but our patient preferred the surgery. Our case added more imaging details corroborated with the histopathology features of MVNT. FLAIR images revealed hypointense nodules surrounded by hyperintense peripheral rings and areas of high signal intensity between the nodules, which correspond to the histopathological architecture. To our knowledge, this is the first case of MVNT with diffusion tensor imaging and fiber tractography imaging studies
