The influence of non-uniform permeability, thermal radiation and variable chemical reaction on three-dimensional flow of an incompressible nanofluid over an exponentially-stretching sheet in association with a convective boundary condition has been investgated. In the present study, a new micro-convection model known as Patel model has been employed to enhance the thermal conductivity and hence the heat transfer capability of nanofluids. In the present analysis, base fluids such as water, 30% ethylene glycol, 50% ethylene glycol and nanoparticles such as Cu, Ag and Fe3O4 have been considered. With the help of some suitable transformations the governing partial differential equationsare converted into a set of ordinary differential equations which have beeen then solved numerically by using fourth-order Runge-Kutta method along with shooting technique. The influence of various embedded physical parameters have been explored through graphs for velocity, temperature, concentration, skin friction, local Nusselt and Sherwood numbers. The resistive force offered by the porous matrix belittles the momentum boundary layer and helps in growing the temperature and concentration boundary layers. Fluid temperature is an increasing function of radiation parameter Rd and Biot’s number Bi whereas concentration field is a decreasing function of Schmidt number Sc and chemical reaction parameter γ

ASH LAYERS FROM SOUTH ANDAMAN SEA: PROBABLY SOURCED FROM TOBA CALDERA

    Get PDF
Deep Sea sediment core PC-1 from the South Andaman Sea (7 ̊19.85' N; 94 ̊ 39.26' E; in East Andaman Basin) below the water depth of 3144 m contain discrete ash layers at various depths. According to morphological study, these ash layers contain glass shards of different varieties i.e. Type-I, Type-II, Type-III, Type-IV and Type-V and it is comparable to glass shards of Toba volcanic reported from other parts of the world. This observation is also supported on the basis of relative biostratigraphic datum observed in the core PC-1. The Layer-A (56 cm thick) at 210 cm bsf is just above the biostratigraphic datum of ca. 0.12 Ma, correspond to Youngest Toba Tuff (YTT), followed by Layer-C belongs to Middle Toba Tuff (MTT) and Layer-D inferred as Oldest Toba Tuff (OTT). This interpretation is further supported by the geochemical data obtained from the EDX analysis, which suggest high silica and alkali contents of rhyolitic composition. Hence, geochemical composition, morphology and biostratigraphic data of these discrete tephra layers show identical characteristics to the products of Toba eruptions, including YTT, MTT and OTT

ABSTRACT Recent research suggests the vivid possibility of using nitrite therapy against various pathological conditions. Moreover, chronic nitrite therapy offers protection against ischemia and augments endothelial cell proliferation through unknown mechanisms. Nitrite-mediated augmentation in the number of circulating neutrophils has also been reported; however, the exact mechanism is not known. In the present study, we have investigated the effect of nitrite (0.5-10 mM) on the proliferation of the neutrophilic cell line HL-60 and also explored the underlying mechanism. Treatment of HL-60 cells with sodium nitrite (0.5-5 mM) led to an increase in cell proliferation, which was confirmed by cell cycle analysis and 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine and thymidine incorporation, whereas cells accumulated in the G 0 /G 1 phase after treatment with 10 mM nitrite. Experiments on the synchronized cells exhibited similar effect, which seems to be nitric oxide (NO)-dependent, because carboxyl-1H-imidazol-1-yloxy,2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,5-dihydro 4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-3-oxide abolished nitrite-mediated proliferative effect. Moreover, the NO donor sodium nitroprusside at micromolar concentrations also exhibited similar effects. Nitrite induced augmentation in S phase, and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was prevented by ROS scavenger/inhibitors. Moreover, mitochondrial blockers, rotenone and antimycin A, also reduced nitrite-mediated cell proliferation. Assessment of the cell cycle regulators cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (Cdk2), Cdk4, cyclin A, cyclin D, cyclin E, and p21 suggested augmentation in the expression and interaction of Cdk2/cyclin E and Cdk2 activity, whereas p21 was down-regulated. Indeed proliferative effect of nitrite was blocked by roscovitine, a Cdk2 inhibitor. The results obtained demonstrate that the proliferative effect of nitrite on HL-60 cells seems to be NO-mediated, redox-sensitive, and Cdk2 activation-dependent, warranting detailed studies before initiating its clinical use

GRASE: Granulometry Analysis with Semi Eager Classifier to Detect Malware

    Get PDF
Technological advancement in communication leading to 5G, motivates everyone to get connected to the internet including ‘Devices’, a technology named Web of Things (WoT). The community benefits from this large-scale network which allows monitoring and controlling of physical devices. But many times, it costs the security as MALicious softWARE (MalWare) developers try to invade the network, as for them, these devices are like a ‘backdoor’ providing them easy ‘entry’. To stop invaders from entering the network, identifying malware and its variants is of great significance for cyberspace. Traditional methods of malware detection like static and dynamic ones, detect the malware but lack against new techniques used by malware developers like obfuscation, polymorphism and encryption. A machine learning approach to detect malware, where the classifier is trained with handcrafted features, is not potent against these techniques and asks for efforts to put in for the feature engineering. The paper proposes a malware classification using a visualization methodology wherein the disassembled malware code is transformed into grey images. It presents the efficacy of Granulometry texture analysis technique for improving malware classification. Furthermore, a Semi Eager (SemiE) classifier, which is a combination of eager learning and lazy learning technique, is used to get robust classification of malware families. The outcome of the experiment is promising since the proposed technique requires less training time to learn the semantics of higher-level malicious behaviours. Identifying the malware (testing phase) is also done faster. A benchmark database like malimg and Microsoft Malware Classification challenge (BIG-2015) has been utilized to analyse the performance of the system. An overall average classification accuracy of 99.03 and 99.11% is achieved, respectively

Construction of capital procurement decision making model to optimize supplier selection using Fuzzy Delphi and AHP-DEMATEL

    Get PDF
Purpose – Supplier selection for capital procurement is a major strategic decision for any automobile company. The decision determines the success of the company and must be taken systematically with the utmost transparency. Therefore, the aim of this study is the construction of capital procurement decision making models to optimize supplier selection in the Indian automobile industry. Design/methodology/approach – To achieve the stated objective, a combined approach of fuzzy theory and AHP-DEMATEL is applied. Evaluation parameters are identified through an extensive literature review and criteria validation has been introduced through a Fuzzy Delphi method by using fuzzy linguistic scales to handle the vagueness of information. AHP is employed to find the priority weight of criteria although an inter-relationship map among criteria is not possible through AHP alone since it considers all criteria as independent. To overcome this, DEMATEL is used to establish cause-effect relationships among criteria. Findings – The results show that the total cost of ownership is the first weighted criterion in supplier selection for capital procurement, followed by manufacturing flexibility and maintainability, then conformity with requirement. The cause-effect model shows that supplier profile, total cost of ownership, service support and conformity with requirement are in the cause group and are considered to be the most critical factors in selecting the supplier. Originality/value – The study’s outcome can help the automobile industry to optimize their selection process in selecting their suppliers for capital procurement; the proposed model can provide guidelines and direction in this regard.N

Impact of financial risk on supply chains: a manufacturer-supplier relational perspective

    Get PDF
This study aims to analyse the manufacturer-supplier relational perspective under the influence of exogenous financial risk. Following corporate finance theory, a multi-objective decision model for supplier selection and order allocation is developed to maximise the total profit of the manufacturer, and minimise the implicit equity stake and financial risk faced by selected suppliers. A two-echelon supply chain is explored under the influence of foreign exchange risk, default risk, market risk and price fluctuation risk, and solved using an NSGA-III algorithm. Three case scenarios are analysed to explore the influence of a set of financial risk on the manufacturer-supplier relationship and the behaviour of suppliers concerning risk profile, both in the short and long-term horizon. The results are analysed from both the manufacturer as well as supplier perspective, and the optimal conditions are discussed under the cascading risk circumstances. The study provides multiple insights into the impact of financial risk on supply chain relationship and will be valuable for dealing with similar uncertain economic environment. The research is likely to be of benefit beyond supply chain managers, like investors and financial risk managers in making informed decisions. The need to focus on systemic risk in supply chains is evident from the study

ROS Regulation Mechanism for Mitigation of Abiotic Stress in Plants

    Get PDF
Plants respond to various stresses during their lifecycle among which abiotic stress is the most severe one comprising heat, cold, drought, salinity, flooding, etc. which take a heavy toll on crop yield worldwide in every corresponding year. ROS has a dual role in abiotic stress mechanisms where, at high levels, they are toxic to cells while at the same time, the same molecule can function as a signal transducer that activates a local as well as a systemic plant defense response against stress. The most common ROS species are Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), Superoxide anions (O2-), Hydroxyl radicals (OH-), and Singlet oxygen (1O2) which are results of physiological metabolism often controlled by enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant defense systems. ROS generally accumulate in plants during abiotic and biotic stress conditions resulting in oxidative damage which ultimately leads to programmed cell death. Many ROS scavenging pathways have been well studied against stress responses. Through careful manipulation of ROS levels in plants, we can enhance stress tolerance in plants under unfavorable environmental conditions. This chapter presents an overview of ROS regulation in plants and the essential enzymes involved in the abiotic stress tolerance mechanisms which are thoroughly discussed below

Anti-thrombotic efficacy of S007-867: Pre-clinical evaluation in experimental models of thrombosis in vivo and in vitro.

Pharmacological inhibition of platelet collagen interaction is a promising therapeutic strategy to treat intra-vascular thrombosis. S007-867 is a novel synthetic inhibitor of collagen-induced platelet aggregation. It has shown better antithrombotic protection than aspirin and clopidogrel with minimal bleeding tendency in mice. The present study is aimed to systematically investigate the antithrombotic efficacy of S007-867 in comparison to aspirin and clopidogrel in vivo and to delineate its mechanism of action in vitro. Aspirin, clopidogrel, and S007-867 significantly reduced thrombus weight in arterio-venous (AV) shunt model in rats. In mice, following ferric chloride induced thrombosis in either carotid or mesenteric artery; S007-867 significantly prolonged the vessel occlusion time (1.2-fold) and maintained a sustained blood flow velocity for >30 min. Comparatively, clopidogrel showed significant prolongation in TTO (1.3-fold) while aspirin remained ineffective. Both S007-867 and aspirin did not alter bleeding time in either kidney or spleen injury models, and thus maintained hemostasis, while clopidogrel showed significant increase in spleen bleeding time (1.7-fold). The coagulation parameters namely thrombin time, prothrombin time or activated partial thromboplastin time remained unaffected even at high concentration of S007-867 (300 µM), thus implying its antithrombotic effect to be primarily platelet mediated. S007-867 significantly inhibited collagen-mediated platelet adhesion and aggregation in mice ex-vivo. Moreover, when blood was perfused over a highly thrombogenic combination of collagen mimicking peptides like CRP-GFOGER-VWF-III, S007-867 significantly reduced total thrombus volume or ZV50 (53.4 ± 5.7%). Mechanistically, S007-867 (10-300 μM) inhibited collagen-induced ATP release, thromboxane A2 (TxA2) generation, intra-platelet [Ca+2] flux and global tyrosine phosphorylation including PLCγ2. Collectively the present study highlights that S007-867 is a novel synthetic inhibitor of collagen induced platelet activation, that effectively maintains blood flow velocity and delays vascular occlusion. It inhibits thrombogenesis without compromising hemostasis. Therefore, S007-867 may be further developed for the treatment of thrombotic disorders in clinical settings

Sensor-based precision nutrient and irrigation management enhances the physiological performance, water productivity, and yield of soybean under system of crop intensification

Sensor-based decision tools provide a quick assessment of nutritional and physiological health status of crop, thereby enhancing the crop productivity. Therefore, a 2-year field study was undertaken with precision nutrient and irrigation management under system of crop intensification (SCI) to understand the applicability of sensor-based decision tools in improving the physiological performance, water productivity, and seed yield of soybean crop. The experiment consisted of three irrigation regimes [I1: standard flood irrigation at 50% depletion of available soil moisture (DASM) (FI), I2: sprinkler irrigation at 80% ETC (crop evapo-transpiration) (Spr 80% ETC), and I3: sprinkler irrigation at 60% ETC (Spr 60% ETC)] assigned in main plots, with five precision nutrient management (PNM) practices{PNM1-[SCI protocol], PNM2-[RDF, recommended dose of fertilizer: basal dose incorporated (50% N, full dose of P and K)], PNM3-[RDF: basal dose point placement (BDP) (50% N, full dose of P and K)], PNM4-[75% RDF: BDP (50% N, full dose of P and K)] and PNM5-[50% RDF: BDP (50% N, full P and K)]} assigned in sub-plots using a split-plot design with three replications. The remaining 50% N was top-dressed through SPAD assistance for all the PNM practices. Results showed that the adoption of Spr 80% ETC resulted in an increment of 25.6%, 17.6%, 35.4%, and 17.5% in net-photosynthetic rate (Pn), transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (Gs), and intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), respectively, over FI. Among PNM plots, adoption of PNM3 resulted in a significant (p=0.05) improvement in photosynthetic characters like Pn (15.69 µ mol CO2 m−2 s−1), Tr (7.03 m mol H2O m−2 s−1), Gs (0.175 µmol CO2 mol−1 year−1), and Ci (271.7 mol H2O m2 s−1). Enhancement in SPAD (27% and 30%) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) (42% and 52%) values were observed with nitrogen (N) top dressing through SPAD-guided nutrient management, helped enhance crop growth indices, coupled with better dry matter partitioning and interception of sunlight. Canopy temperature depression (CTD) in soybean reduced by 3.09–4.66°C due to adoption of sprinkler irrigation. Likewise, Spr 60% ETc recorded highest irrigation water productivity (1.08 kg ha−1 m−3). However, economic water productivity (27.5 INR ha−1 m−3) and water-use efficiency (7.6 kg ha−1 mm−1 day−1) of soybean got enhanced under Spr 80% ETc over conventional cultivation. Multiple correlation and PCA showed a positive correlation between physiological, growth, and yield parameters of soybean. Concurrently, the adoption of Spr 80% ETC with PNM3 recorded significantly higher grain yield (2.63 t ha−1) and biological yield (8.37 t ha−1) over other combinations. Thus, the performance of SCI protocols under sprinkler irrigation was found to be superior over conventional practices. Hence, integrating SCI with sensor-based precision nutrient and irrigation management could be a viable option for enhancing the crop productivity and enhance the resource-use efficiency in soybean under similar agro-ecological regions
