    Dietary patterns in urbanised blacks

    A survey of dietary patterns was made in Guguletu, an urban Black township near Cape Town. The subjects comprised Black children and adults eating adult-type food. They were divided into 5 groups-3 groups of families according to income (well-to-do, medium and poor), one group of bachelors and one group recently removed from the coastal district of Simonstown. Dietary patterns were studied quantitatively and qualitatively. A computerised food table was compiled for obtaining data on the intake of 28 nutrients by families and individuals, per week and per day. Qualitative data were provided by respondents interviewed in their homes and bachelor quarters. Interviews included questions on taboos, cooking methods and meal patterns, as well as daily food intake and weekly purchasing.Transition from rural to urban living brings about a taste for sophisticated 'town foods' but the basic anthropological predilection for c'arbohydrate remains unchanged, and meat was found to be the most valued food. Fat consumption increases in an urban community. Total food consumption was inversely related to family size, the highest calorie intake being noted among the bachelors. Riboflavin intake fell short of the National Research Council's recommended daily allowances as did niacin, tryptophan and calcium. The dietary pattern developing in an urban Black township clearly needs modification to ensure adequate nutrient intake and to prevent destruction of nutrients by faulty cooking methods.S. Afr. Med.     Validation and implementation of low-cost dynamic insulin sensitivity tests

    DTM2011 handbook/programme is given in files and also available as a hard copyObjective: Insulin sensitivity (SI) tests can provide important information for type 2 diabetes risk assessment and investigations of metabolism or pre-diabetes. Our group previously presented the dynamic insulin sensitivity and secretion test (DISST) and the real-time quick DISST (DISTq) as low-cost, low-burden and accurate alternatives to established tests. The DISST provides concurrent SI and endogenous insulin secretion (UN) metrics, the DISTq does not require insulin or C-peptide assays for SI identification, but can return an immediate result. This study validates the DISST and DISTq in comparison to the euglycemic, hyperinsulinemic clamp (EIC) Method: Fifty participants (with 10 BMI>30; 10 BMI>25, <30; and 5 BMI<25 of each gender) underwent the EIC and DISST. The DISST protocol requires 5 samples from a 30 minute protocol similar to the IM-IVGTT. Data from the DISST protocol was sufficient to identify SI using both the DISST and DISTq parameter identification methods and UN from the DISST. Result: DISST and DISTq SI values correlated well to the EIC (R=0.81 and R=0.76, respectively) and each other (R=0.84). UN values obtained during the DISST showed clinically relevant distinctions between participants, and clearly differentiated the beta-cell function of impaired glucose tolerant participants who had the same EIC SI. Participant acceptance of the protocol was high with very minor reported adverse effects. Conclusion: The DISST and DISTq correlated well against the EIC compared to most established insulin sensitivity tests. The DISST can better differentiate patients as it provides UN metrics that the EIC does not. A computer program makes uptake and use of the model-based DISST and DISTq tests straightforward for clinicians and researchers

    The Dynamic Insulin Sensitivity and Secretion Test (DISST) - a novel measure of insulin sensitivity

    Objective: To validate the methodology for the Dynamic Insulin Sensitivity and Secretion Test (DISST) and to demonstrate its potential in clinical and research settings. Methods: 123 men and women had routine clinical and biochemical measurements, an oral glucose tolerance test and a DISST. For the DISST, participants were cannulated for blood sampling and bolus administration. Blood samples were drawn at t=0, 10, 15, 25 and 35 minutes for measurement of glucose, insulin and C-peptide. A 10g bolus of intravenous glucose at t=5 minutes and 1U of intravenous insulin immediately after the t=15 minute sample were given. Fifty participants also had a hyperinsulinaemic euglycaemic clamp. Relationships between DISST insulin sensitivity (SI) and the clamp, and both DISST SI and secretion and other metabolic variables were measured. Results: A Bland-Altman plot showed little bias in the comparison of DISST with the clamp; with DISST underestimating the glucose clamp by 0.1·10-2·mg·l·kg-1·min-1·pmol-1 (90%CI -0.2 to 0). The correlation between SI as measured by DISST and the clamp was 0.82, the c unit for the ROC analysis for the two tests was 0.96. Metabolic variables showed significant correlations with DISST IS, and the second phase of insulin release. DISST also appears able to distinguish different insulin secretion patterns in individuals with identical SI values. Conclusions: DISST is a simple, dynamic test that compares favourably with the clamp in assessing SI and allows simultaneous assessment of insulin secretion. DISST has the potential to provide even more information about the pathophysiology of diabetes than more complicated tests

    We study the propagation of pions at finite temperature and finite chemical potential in the framework of the linear sigma model with 2 quark flavors and NcN_c colors. The velocity of massless pions in general differs from that of light. One-loop calculations show that in the chiral symmetry broken phase pions, under certain conditions, propagate faster than light.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures included.     We model the propagation of a coronal shock wave, using nonlinear geometrical acoustics. The method is based on the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approach and takes into account the main properties of nonlinear waves: i) dependence of the wave front velocity on the wave amplitude, ii) nonlinear dissipation of the wave energy, and iii) progressive increase in the duration of solitary shock waves. We address the method in detail and present results of the modeling of the propagation of shock-associated extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) waves as well as Moreton waves along the solar surface in the simplest solar corona model. The calculations reveal deceleration and lengthening of the waves. In contrast, waves considered in the linear approximation keep their length unchanged and slightly accelerate.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Solar Physic

    Are direct photons a clean signal of a thermalized quark gluon plasma?

    Direct photon production from a quark gluon plasma (QGP) in thermal equilibrium is studied directly in real time. In contrast to the usual S-matrix calculations, the real time approach is valid for a QGP that formed and reached LTE a short time after a collision and of finite lifetime (1020fm/c\sim 10-20 \mathrm{fm}/c as expected at RHIC or LHC). We point out that during such finite QGP lifetime the spectrum of emitted photons carries information on the initial state. There is an inherent ambiguity in separating the virtual from the observable photons during the transient evolution of the QGP. We propose a real time formulation to extract the photon yield which includes the initial stage of formation of the QGP parametrized by an effective time scale of formation Γ1\Gamma^{-1}. This formulation coincides with the S-matrix approach in the infinite lifetime limit. It allows to separate the virtual cloud as well as the observable photons emitted during the pre- equilibrium stage from the yield during the QGP lifetime. We find that the lowest order contribution O(αem)\mathcal{O}(\alpha_{em}) which does \emph{not} contribute to the S-matrix approach, is of the same order of or larger than the S-matrix contribution during the lifetime of the QGP for a typical formation time 1fm/c\sim 1 \mathrm{fm}/c. The yield for momenta 3Gev/c\gtrsim 3 \mathrm{Gev}/c features a power law fall-off T3Γ2/k5\sim T^3 \Gamma^2/k^{5} and is larger than that obtained with the S-matrix for momenta 4Gev/c\geq 4 \mathrm{Gev}/c. We provide a comprehensive numerical comparison between the real time and S-matrix yields and study the dynamics of the build-up of the photon cloud and the different contributions to the radiative energy loss.     Lepton Flavor Violating Z Decays in the Zee Model

    We calculate lepton flavor violating (LFV) Z decays Z \to {{e_i^\pm}}e_j^\mp (i, j = e, \mu, \tau ; i\neq j) in the Zee model keeping in view the radiative leptonic decays e_i\to e_j\gamma (i = \mu, \tau ; j = e, \mu ; i\neq j), \mu decay and anomalous muon magnetic moment (\mu AMM). We investigate three different cases of Zee f_{ij} coupling (A) f_{e\mu}^2 = f_{\mu\tau}^2= f_{\tau e}^2, (B) f_{e\mu}^2 \gg f_{\tau e}^2 \gg f_{\mu\tau}^2, and (C) f_{\mu\tau}^2 \gg f_{e\mu}^2 \gg f_{\tau e}^2 subject to the neutrino phenomenology. Interestingly, we find that, although the case (C) satisfies the large excess value of \mu AMM, however, it is unable to explain the solar neutrino experimental result, whereas the case (B) satisfies the bi-maximal neutrino mixing scenario, but confronts with the result of \mu AMM experiment. We also find that among all the three cases, only the case (C) gives rise to largest contribution to the ratio B(Z\to e^\pm\tau^\mp)/B(Z\to \mu^\pm \mu^\mp) \simeq {10}^{-8} which is still two order less than the accessible value to be probed by the future linear colliders, whereas for the other two cases, this ratio is too low to be observed even in the near future for all possible LFV Z decay modes.Comment: 12 pages, RevTex, 2 figures, 3 Tables, typos corrected, reference added, version to appear in Phys.
