Experimental method for measuring classical concurrence of generic beam shapes
Classical entanglement is a powerful tool which provides a neat numerical
estimate for the study of classical correlations. Its experimental
investigation, however, has been limited to special cases. Here, we demonstrate
that the experimental quantification of the level of classical entanglement can
be carried out in more general instances. Our approach enables the extension to
arbitrarily shaped transverse modes and hence delivering a suitable
quantification tool to describe concisely the modal structure
Differences and similarities between SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2: spike receptor-binding domain recognition and host cell infection with support of cellular serine proteases
Novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) became pandemic by the end of March 2020. In contrast to the 2002–2003 SARS-CoV outbreak, which had a higher pathogenicity and lead to higher mortality rates, SARSCoV-2 infection appears to be much more contagious. Moreover, many SARS-CoV-2 infected patients are reported to develop low-titer neutralizing antibody and usually suffer prolonged illness, suggesting a more effective SARS-CoV-2 immune surveillance evasion than SARS-CoV. This paper summarizes the current state of art about the differences and similarities between the pathogenesis of the two coronaviruses, focusing on receptor binding domain, host cell entry and protease activation. Such differences may provide insight into possible intervention strategies to fight the pandemic
Satisfactory mid-term outcomes of condylar-constrained knee implants in primary total knee arthroplasty: clinical and radiological follow-up
Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate (1) the reoperation rates and survivorship for septic and aseptic causes, (2) radiographic outcomes, and (3) clinical outcomes of condylar-constrained knee (CCK) implants used in primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with severe coronal deformity and/or intraoperative instability. Materials and methods: A consecutive series of CCK implants in primary TKA was retrospectively evaluated in patients with severe coronal deformities. Forty-nine patients (54 knees) were included with a mean follow-up of 9 years (range 6–12). All patients were treated with a single-design, second-generation CCK implant. The primary diagnosis was osteoarthritis in 36 knees, post-traumatic arthritis in 7 knees, and rheumatoid arthritis in 4 knees. Preoperatively, standing femorotibial alignment was varus in 22 knees and valgus in 20 knees. Results: At a mean follow-up of 9 years, overall survivorship was 93.6%. Two knees (4.3%) required revision for periprosthetic joint infection. One knee (2.1%) required subsequent arthroscopy due to patellar clunk syndrome. At final follow-up, no evidence of loosening or migration of any implant was reported, and the mean Knee Society knee scores improved from 43 to 86 points (p < 0.001). The mean Knee Society function scores improved to 59 points (p < 0.001). The average flexion contracture improved from 7° preoperatively to 2° postoperatively and the average flexion from 98° to 110°. No knees reported varus–valgus instability in flexion or extension. Conclusion: CCK implants in primary TKA with major coronal deformities and/or intraoperative instability provide good midterm survivorship, comparable with less constrained implants. In specific cases, CCK implants can be considered a viable option with good clinical and radiographic outcomes. However, a higher degree of constraint should be used cautiously, leaving the first choice to less constrained implants. Level of evidence Therapeutic study, level IV
E-cigarettes and youth: an unresolved Public Health concern
The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarette) and vaping devices started as a potential aid for cessation and reducing the harmful consequences of cigarette smoking, mainly in the adult population. Today e-cigarette use is highly increasing in vulnerable populations, especially young and pregnant women, due to the misconception of its harmless use.Despite the growing acknowledgment in e-cigarette as a potential harmful device, and due to mixed information found concerning its beneficial aid for smokers, along with an insufficient clinical study done in human models, it is important to further evaluate the possible benefits and risks of non-combusting, vaping nicotine or non-nicotine delivery devices. In this review we tried to summarize the latest updated information found in the literature, concentrating mainly in the variety of adverse effects of e-cigarette use and its contribution for recent and future health concerns
During the COVID-19 pandemic where has respiratory syncytial virus gone?
The diffusion of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the implementation of restrictive measures led to a drastic reduction of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) diffusion. Few RSV cases have been detected worldwide, even after the removal of the restrictions. We review the current literature and present possible explanations on why there has been a significant reduction of RSV detection during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also hypothesize what may happen when RSV begins to circulate again. The increase of an immunologically naïve population, with infants born from mothers who have not reinforced their immunity to RSV, could lead to greater RSV epidemics in the coming seasons. It is crucial to prepare the scientific community and to keep RSV surveillance active to avoid dramatic consequences
The entropic cost of quantum generalized measurements
Landauer’s principle introduces a symmetry between computational and physical processes: erasure of information, a logically irreversible operation, must be underlain by an irreversible transformation dissipating energy. Monitoring micro- and nano-systems needs to enter into the energetic balance of their control; hence, finding the ultimate limits is instrumental to the development of future thermal machines operating at the quantum level. We report on the experimental investigation of a lower bound to the irreversible entropy associated to generalized quantum measurements on a quantum bit. We adopted a quantum photonics gate to implement a device interpolating from the weakly disturbing to the fully invasive and maximally informative regime. Our experiment prompted us to introduce a bound taking into account both the classical result of the measurement and the outcoming quantum state; unlike previous investigation, our entropic bound is based uniquely on measurable quantities. Our results highlight what insights the information-theoretic approach provides on building blocks of quantum information processors
Can Food Stamps Do More to Improve Food Choices? An Economic Perspective
Food stamp recipients, like other Americans, struggle with nutrition problems associated with choice of foods, as well as amounts. This series of Economic Information Bulletins compiles evidence to help answer the question of whether the Food Stamp Program can do more to improve the food choices of participants. It examines the role of affordability and price of healthful foods in influencing food choices and the likely success of any policy targeted at changing food choices through food stamp bonuses or restrictions. It also examines other approaches to changing food choices, including nutrition education and potential strategies drawn from behavioral economics literature. Meaningful improvements in the diets of food stamp recipients will likely depend on a combination of many tactics. Measuring the effect of any policy change on food choices and health outcomes remains a challenge.Food Stamp Program, food consumption, food prices, food expenditures, nutrition education, behavioral economics, food choices, diet, health, fruits and vegetables, Food Assistance and Nutrition Research Program, FANRP, ERS, USDA, Agricultural and Food Policy, Consumer/Household Economics, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety, Institutional and Behavioral Economics,
