Microclimate model for urban heat island simulation: a prediction tool extension to calculate the ambient temperature of building
Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) is a public university located at Parit Raja, Batu Pahat, which is categorized as a suburban area of Johor, Malaysia and is still in development progress. However, the quick pace of development leads to changing of land use from green surface to hard surface building blocks which tends to increase the temperature level and reduce outdoor comfort level of occupants in UTHM. In addition, the available software simulations that used currently for temperature monitoring is mostly too complicated for educated non-scientist such as urban planners and architects. This research objectives are to predict the ambient building temperature of reference area by using Screening Tool for Estate Environment Evaluation software (STEVE) and to provide comparison for both of field measurements with STEVE results. In order to achieve these objectives, a total of six stations considering different urban morphologies are evaluated to give a better understanding on implication of urban heat island. The daily minimum (Tmin), average (Tavg) and maximum (Tmax) air temperature for six stations in UTHM have been developed and validated based on a long-term field measurement. The pavement (PAVE), building (BDG), green plot area ratio (GnPR), average height area (AvgHT), sky view factor (SVF), total wall area (WALL) and result of the temperature (Tmax, Tmin and Tavg) are automatically calculated by STEVE from the developed 3D models. The results show that the percentage different of temperature between STEVE and field measurement is in a range of 0.9-1.0% and this has strongly indicated that STEVE is suitable to be used as temperature prediction tool
Analysis of trace metal contamination in Pahang River and Kelantan River, Malaysia
The primary objective of this study is to determine trace metal contamination in environmental samples obtained from Pahang River and Kelantan River, Malaysia which may help to identify the risk of sustainable dredging in these areas. This research also proceeds to compare the trace metal concentration with the National Water Quality Standards of Malaysia, Interim Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines and Malaysian Food Act 1983 to determine its limits and risks. Samples of water, sediment, snails and fishes were collected and analyzed for As, Cu, Cd, Cr, Fe, Pb, Ni, Mn, and Hg by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. It was found that the concentration of trace metals namely As, Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb, Ni, and Hg in river water, sediment, snail and fish samples in Pahang River were lower than the maximum allowable limits, except for Fe and Mn. In Kelantan River, the concentration of trace metals indicating that it is contaminated with Fe, Mn, Pb, Cr, Cu, Hg, and As as all trace metals exceeded the maximum allowable limits. Negative impacts may arise, and the river may contaminate more in future if there is no proper management to tackle this issue during execution of dredging activities
Environmental management for dredging sediments - The requirement of developing nations
Scientific research has characterized the effects of dredging, an underwater excavation process for navigational purposes or material extraction, and has shown its association with a number of chemical, physical and biological impacts. Due to this, much environmental management has been applied in the dredging industry in order to manage its detrimental effects. However, developing nations may have different approaches towards their dredging environmental management to compare to their companions with higher economic strength. Moreover, scientific evidence to make an informed decision is often lacking, hence affecting the number of research executed at these nations, limiting their efforts to preserve the environment. This paper reviews the dredging environmental impacts and its two important factors, dredging technology and sediment characteristic, that determine the magnitude of impacts through literature review, and discusses the need for a more integrated dredging environmental management to be developed for developing nations

Examining the influence of passive design approaches on NZEBs: potential net zero healthcare buildings implementation in Malaysia
Nowadays, net-zero energy buildings (NZEBs) concept has gained considerable attention not only between the developed countries, but also among the developing countries including Malaysia. The rapid development in Malaysia, especially in the construction of healthcare buildings needs to be given due attention since these developments lead to all sorts of environmental problems. As the number of healthcare buildings increases, the energy consumes to operate these buildings will increase. The consequences of uncontrollable energy consumption may result in the increased volume of carbon dioxide emissions as well as depletion of natural resources. Thus, NZEBs has emerged as a proactive concept to confront with these issues. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of passive design approaches on NZEBs as well as the potential of net zero healthcare buildings implementation in Malaysia based on a review of the existing literature and by utilising semi-structured interviews with 3 experienced architects. The result of this paper indicates that there are four main passive design components has strong influences on NZEBs which are building orientation, shading devices, ventilation, and thermal insulation. These practices are being actively practiced in Malaysia construction industry; thus, it shows that net zero energy healthcare buildings are potential to be designed in Malaysia. The study has gone some way towards enhancing our understanding of the significance of passive design approaches towards net zero healthcare buildings for future implementation in Malaysia context
Automatic materials tracking practices through RFID implementation in construction projects
Materials tracking for materials management play a vital role and contributed a major portion of the total cost in a construction project. In addition, the improper handling and storage of materials at the construction site has made it difficult to track and locate at the time are needed to carry out construction works. These problems subsequently contribute to the project delays and increase in the total project costs. Thus, this paper seeks to identify problems regarding current material tracking practices in materials management processes. In this paper, ICT and potential implementation of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for automatic materials tracking is also scrutinised. Data for this paper was obtained from the literature review and the case studies conducted in several construction projects. Semi-structured interviews with construction practitioners were carried out in order to gain insights into current problems, information and communication technologies (ICT) implementation, and RFID capability in assisting materials tracking practices. This paper reveals that construction projects in Malaysia are still using manual materials tracking practices, basic ICT implementation, and totally none RFID existence. Thus, there is a need for the application of RFID in order to facilitate materials tracking automatically for enhancing construction industry processes through IR 4.0

Examining risk as guideline in design stage for green retrofits projects: a review
Green buildings have generally been adopted as strategy towards sustainable
development to reduce greenhouse gas. The implementation of green concept recently has widely
spread over the year. However, the positive impact to the environment is still low due to heavily
focus on new construction project as compare with retrofitting the existing building. A retrofit
practice is not only regaining overall existing building appearance, but the improvement towards
energy efficiency is remarkably significant at the expense of huge challenges and risk. As a
consequence, retrofit practitioner is confronting an assortment of risks at the early stage of the
project. Given that, green retrofit concept is emerging research area to Malaysia construction
industry which motivates to determining the risk involve in design stage. This paper aims to
review risk in design stage for green retrofit project for commercial buildings through gathering
comprehensive literature review. As a result, two main category risks in design stage
(technical/quality risk and financial management risk) is determined and extracted to identify
risk. These risks are then quantified through analysis to enhance design performance within costbenefit.
The proposed conceptual framework model is expected to assist retrofit practitioner to
identify risk and obtain feasible retrofit strategy
