The antiferromagnetic order in an F-AF random alternating quantum spin chain : (CH_3)_2 CHNH_3 Cu(Cl_x Br_{1-x})_3
A possibility of the uniform antiferromagnetic order is pointed out in an
S=1/2 ferromagnetic (F) - antiferromagnetic (AF) random alternating Heisenberg
quantum spin chain compound: (CH_3)_2 CHNH_3 Cu(Cl_x Br_{1-x})_3. The system
possesses the bond alternation of strong random bonds that take +/- 2J and weak
uniform AF bonds of -J. In the pure concentration limits, the model reduces to
the AF-AF alternation chain at x=0 and to the F-AF alternation chain at x=1.
The nonequilibrium relaxation of large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations
exhibits critical behaviors of the uniform AF order in the intermediate
concentration region, which explains the experimental observation of the
magnetic phase transition. The present results suggest that the uniform AF
order may survive even in the presence of the randomly located ferromagnetic
bonds.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Effect of pressure on the quantum spin ladder material IPA-CuCl3
Inelastic neutron scattering and bulk magnetic susceptibility studies of the
quantum S=1/2 spin ladder system IPA-CuCl3 are performed under hydrostatic
pressure. The pressure dependence of the spin gap is determined. At
GPa it is reduced to meV from meV at
ambient pressure. The results allow us to predict a soft-mode quantum phase
transition in this system at P GPa. The measurements are
complicated by a proximity of a structural phase transition that leads to a
deterioration of the sample.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Instability of Magnons in Two-dimensional Antiferromagnet at High Magnetic Fields
Spin dynamics of the square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet, \BaMnGeO, is
studied by a combination of bulk measurements, neutron diffraction, and
inelastic neutron scattering techniques. Easy plane type antiferromagnetic
order is identified at K. The exchange interactions are estimated
as = 27.8(3)eV and = 1.0(1) eV, and the saturation
field is 9.75 T. Magnetic excitation measurements with high
experimental resolution setup by triple axis neutron spectrometer reveals the
instability of one magnon excitation in the field range of .Comment: 5 pgase, 5 figuers, to be published in PRB R
Singlet Ground State and Magnetization Plateaus in BaMnO
Magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization process have been measured in
\green polycrystal. In this compound, the magnetic manganese ion exists as
Mn in a tetrahedral environment, and thus the magnetic interaction can
be described by an S=1 Heisenberg model. The ground state was found to be a
spin singlet with an excitation gap K. Magnetization
plateaus were observed at zero and at half of the saturation magnetization.
These results indicate that the present system can be represented by a coupled
antiferromagnetic dimer model.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, jpsj styl
Interacting Boson Theory of the Magnetization Process of the Spin-1/2 Ferromagnetic-Antiferromagnetic Alternating Heisenberg Chain
The low temperature magnetization process of the
ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain is studied using the
interacting boson approximation. In the low field regime and near the
saturation field, the spin wave excitations are approximated by the
function boson gas for which the Bethe ansatz solution is available. The finite
temperature properties are calculated by solving the integral equation
numerically. The comparison is made with Monte Carlo calculation and the limit
of the applicability of the present approximation is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure
Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation in the Haldane-Gap Antiferromagnet Ni(C_2_H_8_N_2_)_2_NO_2_(ClO_4_)
A new theory is proposed to interpret nuclear spin-lattice relaxation-time
(T_1_) measurements on the spin-1 quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg
antiferromagnet Ni(C_2_H_8_N_2_)_2_NO_2_(ClO_4_) (NENP). While Sagi and Affleck
pioneeringly discussed this subject in terms of field-theoretical languages,
there is no theoretical attempt yet to explicitly simulate the novel
observations of 1/T_1_ reported by Fujiwara et al.. By means of modified spin
waves, we solve the minimum of 1/T_1_ as a function of an applied field,
pending for the past decade.Comment: to be published in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 73, No. 4 (2004
Random Bond Effect in the Quantum Spin System (TlK)CuCl
The effect of exchange bond randomness on the ground state and the
field-induced magnetic ordering was investigated through magnetization
measurements in the spin-1/2 mixed quantum spin system
(TlK)CuCl for . Both parent compounds TlCuCl and
KCuCl are coupled spin dimer systems, which have the singlet ground state
with excitation gaps K and 31 K, respectively. Due to
bond randomness, the singlet ground state turns into the magnetic state with
finite susceptibility, nevertheless, the excitation gap remains. Field-induced
magnetic ordering, which can be described by the Bose condensation of excited
triplets, magnons, was observed as in the parent systems. The phase transition
temperature is suppressed by the bond randomness. This behavior may be
attributed to the localization effect.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, 12 eps files, revtex, will appear in PR
Thermodynamic properties of a tetramer ferro-ferro-antiferro-antiferromagnetic Ising-Heisenberg bond alternating chain as a model system for Cu(3-Clpy)(N)
Thermodynamic properties of a tetramer
ferro-ferro-antiferro-antiferromagnetic Ising-Heisenberg bond alternating chain
are investigated by the use of an exact mapping transformation technique. Exact
results for the magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat in the zero as
well as nonzero magnetic field are presented and discussed in detail. The
results obtained from the mapping are compared with the relevant experimental
data of Cu(3-Clpy)(N) (3-Clpy=3-Chloropyridine).Comment: 10 pages, 1 table, 14 figures, to be presented at CSMAG04 conferenc
Alternating Heisenberg Spin-1/2 Chains in a Transverse Magnetic Field
The ground state phase diagram of the alternating spin-1/2 chains with
anisotropic ferromagnetic coupling under the influence of a symmetry breaking
transverse magnetic field is studied. We have used the exact diagonalization
technique. In the limit where the antiferromagnetic coupling is dominant, we
have identified two Ising-type quantum phase transitions. We have calculated
two critical fields and
, corresponding to the transition between different magnetic
phases of the system. It is found that the intermediate state
() is gapful, describing the stripe-antiferromagnetic
phase.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
Thermal Conductivity of Spin-1/2 Chains
We study the low-temperature transport properties of clean one-dimensional
spin-1/2 chains coupled to phonons. Due to the presence of approximate
conservation laws, the heat current decays very slowly giving rise to an
exponentially large heat conductivity, . As a result of an
interplay of Umklapp scattering and spinon-phonon coupling, the characteristic
energy scale turns out to be of order , where is
the Debye energy, rather than the magnetic exchange interaction -- in
agreement with recent measurements in SrCuO compounds. A large magnetic field
strongly affects the heat transport by two distinct mechanisms. First, it
induces a LINEAR spinon--phonon coupling, which alters the nature of the fixed point: the elementary excitations of the system are COMPOSITE
SPINON-PHONON objects. Second, the change of the magnetization and the
corresponding change of the wave vector of the spinons strongly affects the way
in which various Umklapp processes can relax the heat current, leading to a
characteristic fractal--like spiky behavior of when plotted as a
function of magnetization at fixed T.Comment: 16 pages, RevTex4, 2 figures included; revised refs. and some useful
comments on experimental relevance. On July 12 2005, added an appendix
correcting an error in the form of the phonon propagator. The main result is
