Novelty detection in an auditory oddball task on freely moving rats
The relative importance or saliency of sensory inputs depend on the animal’s environmental context and the behavioural responses to these same inputs can vary over time. Here we show how freely moving rats, trained to discriminate between deviant tones embedded in a regular pattern of repeating stimuli and different variations of the classic oddball paradigm, can detect deviant tones, and this discriminability resembles the properties that are typical of neuronal adaptation described in previous studies. Moreover, the auditory brainstem response (ABR) latency decreases after training, a finding consistent with the notion that animals develop a type of plasticity to auditory stimuli. Our study suggests the existence of a form of long-term memory that may modulate the level of neuronal adaptation according to its behavioural relevance, and sets the ground for future experiments that will help to dis- entangle the functional mechanisms that govern behavioural habituation and its relation to neuronal adaptation
Eradication of invasive species: science, attitude and understanding. The beaver in Tierra del Fuego
El manejo de especies invasoras presenta desafíos, que incluyen la necesidad de generar conocimiento aplicado y capacidades de gestión, así como modificar actitudes y comportamientos de la sociedad. El caso de la especie invasora castor canadiense, Castor canadensis, ejemplifica enfoques que pueden aplicarse para tratar otras especies invasoras. Repasamos la historia de manejo del castor y el cambio de enfoque que derivó en un acuerdo binacional inédito para restaurar los ecosistemas afectados por la especie mediante su erradicación, acuerdo que avanza mediante un proceso de generación de capacidades y escalamiento en la complejidad del trabajo, desde áreas piloto hacia todo el rango de distribución actual de la especie. Destacamos cómo la investigación aporta al manejo del castor, presentando detalles de la investigación en marcha en algunos ejes principales: 1) la factibilidad de erradicar en áreas piloto; 2) la estimación de tasas vitales y de dispersión y la construcción de modelos predictivos de expansión de la invasión, y 3) la determinación de criterios objetivos para declarar la erradicación del castor en sectores bajo manejo. La generación de capacidades es crucial para este complejo proceso. La construcción del capital social necesario para manejar el problema requiere de un diálogo continuo entre los diversos sectores involucrados y la construcción de agendas consensuadas. El sector científico puede asistir este proceso, pero sin imponer agendas unilaterales, sino identificando y contribuyendo a resolver las preguntas correctas y entendiendo las particularidades de los demás sectores, la cultura de las organizaciones y los tiempos para dar respuestas prácticas para lograr conservación basada en ciencia.The management of invasive species involves several challenges, ranging from the need to generate applied knowledge and capacity building abilities to a change in perceptions and behaviors in society. The case of the invasive Canadian beaver, Castor canadensis, illustrates possible approaches to address other invasive species. We reviewed the management history of the beaver and the change of approach that led to an unprecedented bi-national agreement to restore the affected ecosystems by means of the eradication of the species. This agreement advances by means of a training process of capacity building and a gradual scaling in the complexity of the work, from pilot areas to the whole current distribution of the species. We highlight how scientific research contributes to the management of the species, presenting details of the ongoing research in three major areas: 1) feasibility of eradication in pilot areas; 2) assessment of vital and dispersion rates and building predictive models of the spread of the invasion, and 3) determination of objective criteria to declare beaver eradication in areas under management. Capacity building is critical for this complex process. Assembling the social capital needed to manage the problem requires a continuous dialogue and agreed agendas among various stakeholders. The scientific sector can assist in this process without imposing unilateral agendas, but identifying the right questions and understanding the particularities of other sectors, the culture of organizations and the time frames needed for practical responses to achieve science-based conservation.Fil: Schiavini, Adrian Carlos Miguel. Invasive alien species management in Patagonia, Argentina : prioritization, achievements and science-policy integration challenges identified by the National Parks Administration
Las especies exóticas invasoras amenazan la biodiversidad. Existen diferentes opciones para su manejo: prevención, detección temprana, erradicación, control, exclusión e incluso la “no acción”. A mayor complejidad de manejo, más información se requiere para ejecutarlo exitosamente. Además, gestores e investigadores abordan la problemática con enfoques e intereses diferentes. Mientras los primeros priorizan acciones de manejo, los segundos encuentran una oportunidad para estudiar aspectos básicos y/o teóricos, no siempre aplicados al manejo. La gestión de estas especies ofrece una ocasión única para que ambos grupos trabajen juntos en busca de beneficios mutuos. Actualmente, las decisiones de manejo suelen basarse en experiencias o información de otros países, no siempre adaptables a la problemática local. En este trabajo presentamos varias experiencias de manejo en la Administración de Parques Nacionales para exponer logros, dificultades y desafíos a los que usualmente se enfrenta la gestión institucional. Encontramos que: a) ante recursos escasos es importante generar herramientas de priorización efectivas y redes de trabajo; b) es imprescindible involucrar a la comunidad en las acciones de manejo; c) se requieren investigaciones aplicadas al manejo específico; y d) es necesario una detallada planificación previa y un monitoreo de las acciones ejecutadas y de sus resultados, basados en información técnica de primer nivel, ya que son aspectos claves para un manejo exitoso. Finalmente, gestores e investigadores deben cerciorarse que los resultados de estas investigaciones aplicadas sean conocidos y comprendidos por los tomadores de decisiones y la opinión pública, para asegurar el apoyo a la gestión.Invasive alien species are a threat to biodiversity. Management options encompass prevention, early detection, eradication, control, exclusion and even “no action.” More technical information is needed to achieve complex management actions successfully. In addition, managers and researchers address the problem with different approaches. Managers seek to prioritize management actions, and for researchers, these species are an opportunity to study basic and/or theoretical aspects, but not always applied to management. However, the management strategies offer a unique opportunity for both groups to work together seeking mutual benefits. Currently, management decisions are often based on experiences or information from other countries, which is not always useful for local problems. We present several management experiences in the Argentine National Parks Administration to show achievements, difficulties and challenges usually faced by managers. We found that: a) it is important, when resources are scarce, to generate effective prioritization tools and networks; b) it is also vital to involve the community in the management actions; c) on the other hand, research directly applied to pilot eradication is required; and d) also, a careful planning, and continuity and monitoring of management actions and environmental results based on different types of first class technical information, are key aspects for successful management. Finally, managers and researchers must ensure that the results of applied research are known and understood by decision makers and the general public, to secure management support

ecosistémicos y sus valores culturales asociados (Dudley 2008). El Plan de Gestión (PG) es una herramienta importante para la adecuada gestión de las AP. Es el documento donde se definen los lineamientos técnicos y las normas generales de uso
de un área de conservación. La planificación permite analizar, discutir y decidir el rumbo de las acciones para el correcto manejo o gestión del AP. Según Núñez Araya (2008), la planificación estratégica de un espacio protegido tiene como objetivo definir el futuro
deseado y establecer la forma de alcanzar ese futuro, orientando la toma de decisiones para el mejor uso del espacio.
Como dijo Carlos Matus (Amend et al. 2002), “o sabemos planificar o estamos obligados a la improvisación”. Por esta razón la APN ha incorporado la planificación de la gestión de las AP, recomendando lineamientos para su elaboración. Póster presentado na V XORNADA UNIVERSITARIA GALEGA EN XÉNERO. TRANSFORMANDO DENDE A UNIVERSIDADE. Vigo, 7 Xullo 2017Nesta comunicación, presentamos o proxecto Unha enxeñeira ou científica en cada cole organizado pola Oficina de Igualdade de Xénero da Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC) en colaboración co Concello de Santiago de Compostela. Esta iniciativa pretende incentivar a presenza de rapazas en carreiras relacionadas coas disciplinas STEM (ciencia, enxeñería, tecnoloxía e matemáticas), mediante actividades didácticas nos centros educativos que rachen cos estereotipos sexistas da nosa sociedade.
A actividade didáctica consistiu na realización de dezanove obradoiros, dirixidos a nenas e nenos de 5º ou 6º de primaria e realizados nos meses de setembro e outubro de 2016. Os obradoiros foron impartidos por profesoras ou investigadoras da USC e do Centro de Supercomputación de Galicia (CESGA) para crear referentes femininos e incentivar a presenza de rapazas no ámbito científico tecnolóxico. Ademais, estes obradoiros amosaron a relación da ciencia e da tecnoloxía coa nosa vida cotiá e serviron para achegar ao alumnado a estas disciplinas dun xeito lúdicoConcello de Santiago de Compostel
Spatiotemporal Characteristics of the Largest HIV-1 CRF02_AG Outbreak in Spain: Evidence for Onward Transmissions
Background and Aim: The circulating recombinant form 02_AG (CRF02_AG) is the predominant clade among the human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) non-Bs with a prevalence of 5.97% (95% Confidence Interval-CI: 5.41–6.57%) across Spain. Our aim was to estimate the levels of regional clustering for CRF02_AG and the spatiotemporal characteristics of the largest CRF02_AG subepidemic in Spain.Methods: We studied 396 CRF02_AG sequences obtained from HIV-1 diagnosed patients during 2000–2014 from 10 autonomous communities of Spain. Phylogenetic analysis was performed on the 391 CRF02_AG sequences along with all globally sampled CRF02_AG sequences (N = 3,302) as references. Phylodynamic and phylogeographic analysis was performed to the largest CRF02_AG monophyletic cluster by a Bayesian method in BEAST v1.8.0 and by reconstructing ancestral states using the criterion of parsimony in Mesquite v3.4, respectively.Results: The HIV-1 CRF02_AG prevalence differed across Spanish autonomous communities we sampled from (p < 0.001). Phylogenetic analysis revealed that 52.7% of the CRF02_AG sequences formed 56 monophyletic clusters, with a range of 2–79 sequences. The CRF02_AG regional dispersal differed across Spain (p = 0.003), as suggested by monophyletic clustering. For the largest monophyletic cluster (subepidemic) (N = 79), 49.4% of the clustered sequences originated from Madrid, while most sequences (51.9%) had been obtained from men having sex with men (MSM). Molecular clock analysis suggested that the origin (tMRCA) of the CRF02_AG subepidemic was in 2002 (median estimate; 95% Highest Posterior Density-HPD interval: 1999–2004). Additionally, we found significant clustering within the CRF02_AG subepidemic according to the ethnic origin.Conclusion: CRF02_AG has been introduced as a result of multiple introductions in Spain, following regional dispersal in several cases. We showed that CRF02_AG transmissions were mostly due to regional dispersal in Spain. The hot-spot for the largest CRF02_AG regional subepidemic in Spain was in Madrid associated with MSM transmission risk group. The existence of subepidemics suggest that several spillovers occurred from Madrid to other areas. CRF02_AG sequences from Hispanics were clustered in a separate subclade suggesting no linkage between the local and Hispanic subepidemics

Epidemiological characteristics of the COVID-19 outbreak in a secondary hospital in Spain
Objectives
In 2019 Chinese authorities alerted of the appearance of a cluster of cases of unknown pneumonia related to a new type of coronavirus. Spain is among the most affected countries. Our aim is to describe the cases of COVID-19 at Infanta Sofía University Hospital (Madrid), a public secondary hospital that increased its hospital beds to provide assistance during the outbreak.
Methods
Retrospective descriptive study of cases that met COVID-19 clinical diagnosis criteria or had a positive PCR test from February 27 to June 29, 2020. A description of demographic variables, hospital stay, mortality and the epidemiological curve was performed.
Results
Of 1,828 confirmed cases, 64.4% were hospitalised, 5.6% were admitted to the ICU. About 52.2% were male. The median age was 63.2 years. About 13.1% were nursing home residents. Nineteen percent were of Latin American origin of which 6.8% were admitted to the ICU. Overall case fatality was 14.6%. We observed a biphasic epidemiological curve.
Conclusions
Sixty to 79-year-old males were admitted and deceased more often than women. Mortality reached 14.7%. Latin Americans were admitted more often to the ICU. Clinical Characteristics, Frailty, and Mortality of Residents With COVID-19 in Nursing Homes of a Region of Madrid
Objectives: To describe the clinical characteristics, 30-day mortality, and associated factors of patients living in nursing homes (NH) with COVID-19, from March 20 to June 1, 2020.
Design: This is a retrospective study. A geriatric hospital-based team acted as a consultant and coordinated the care of older people living in NHs from the hospital.
Setting and participants: A total of 630 patients aged 70 and older with Coronavirus Disease 2019 COVID-19 living in 55 NHs.
Methods: A logistic regression was performed to analyze the factors associated with mortality. In addition, Kaplan-Meier curves were applied according to mortality and its associated factors using the log-rank Mantel-Cox test.
Results: The diagnosis of COVID-19 was mainly made by clinical compatibility (N = 430). Median age was 87 years, 64.6% were women and 45.9% were transferred to be cared for at the hospital. A total of 282 patients died (44.7%) within the 30 days of first attention by the team. A severe form of COVID-19 occurred in 473 patients, and the most frequent symptoms were dyspnea (n = 332) and altered level of consciousness (n = 301). According to multiple logistic regression, male sex (P = .019), the Clinical Frailty Score (CFS) ≥6 (P = .004), dementia (P = .012), dyspnea (P < .001), and having a severe form of COVID-19 (P = .001), were associated with mortality, whereas age and care setting were not.
Conclusions and implications: Mortality of the residents living in NHs with COVID-19 was almost 45%. The altered level of consciousness as an atypical presentation of COVID-19 should be considered in this population. A severe form of the disease, present in more than three-quarters of patients, was associated with mortality, apart from the male sex, CFS ≥6, dementia, and dyspnea, whereas age and care setting were not.
