    PURIFICATION AND MOLECULAR WEIGHT DETERMINATION OF KERATINASE ISOLATED FROM STREPTOMYCES MALAYSIENSIS

    Objective: The aim of the present study was to purify and determine the molecular weight of keratinase isolated from Streptomyces malaysiensis.Methods: For that purpose purification was done using ammonium sulphate and Sephadex-LH 100 column chromatography. Further, the fractions were pooled and subjected to molecular weight determination using sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE).Results: The obtained results showed keratinase with 47.57% recovery, 3.5-fold purification and an estimated molecular mass of 27,000 Da. Keratinase showed an optimal activity at 60 οC and pH 8. Keratinase activity of the purified product was assayed with feather powder as a substrate. The isolated strain was identified as Streptomyces malaysiensis based on phylogenetic tree analysis. The strain isolated from termite mound soil showed the highest keratinase activity, which could be considered a microorganism of environmental origin.Conclusion: The production of keratinase on simple media with feathers as sole source allowing its production from the cheap substrate and a commercial production with low production cost. Stability in the presence of detergents, surfactants and solvents make this keratinase extremely useful for a biotechnological process involving keratin

    Gender issues are a focus of discussion in present day research in Kerala. A state with high level human development Index and Gender development index shows economic political and social invisibility of females received attention in Kerala’s academic circles. Majority of the studies highlighted male dominance as a reason for the present day female deprivation. But the special characteristic of reproductive role of female has not received much attention. The rights of women and children are intertwined during the infant stages of life and the health of children is intimately connected with the conditions in which their mothers work. The first six years of life (and especially the first two years) have a decisive and lasting influence on a child’s health, well-being, aptitudes and opportunities. The absent from market work for a long period during their younger ages (potential age), reduces the experience and competitiveness of mother. The full time mental and physical presence of mother during the child’s early six years is the right of the child because; any deficiency of food or mental care will negatively influence the entire future achievement of the child. The compulsory withdrawal, from market work reduces the efficiency of women in labour market and thereby reduces her earning capacity, in future reduces the material well being of the child in his/her future development. Present paper discusses about the contradictions of child’s right and mothers rights and link the role of society in it. This paper is basically a theoretical one

    Gallium arsenide whispering gallery mode resonators for terahertz photonics

    As the field of terahertz (THz) photonics advances, we present a monolithic gallium arsenide (GaAs) disk-shaped whispering gallery mode resonator that has potential as a component in THz nonlinear optics. GaAs is a material with significant optical nonlinearity which can be enhanced when the crystal is shaped into a microdisk resonator. A 4-mm-disk-resonator was fabricated using single-point diamond turning and was characterised to obtain a quality (Q) factor of 2.2k at ~150 GHz and 1.4k at ~300 GHz. We also demonstrated the blue-shifting of up to ~0.3 GHz of the THz modes using a block of metal. This post-fabrication degree of freedom could be useful for phase-matching requirements for nonlinear optical processes, such as detection based on optical up-conversion of THz radiation. Such a compact, tunable and efficient device could be integrated into nonlinear photonic platforms for THz generation, manipulation and detection.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Biosand Filter for Removal of Chemical Contaminants From Water

    Numerous reports by the United Nations and the World Health Organization have indicated a significant worldwide problem with water pollution and inaccessibility to potable drinking water. Due to technological and economical barriers, the problem with water pollution is particularly more serious for under-developed and developing countries. The present study is aimed at designing, constructing and evaluating a cost-effective biosand filter was undertaken. Results indicated the removal of up to 80% total hardness, 86% chlorides, 96% turbidity and 90% colour. Moreover, the filter's performance was appraised by the absence of E. coli in the filtered sample. The filter describes the proven bioremediation technology and its ability to empower at-risk populations to use naturally occurring biology and readily available materials as a sustainable way to achieve the health benefits of safe drinking water

    Ethambutol ocular toxicity in a patient with pulmonary tuberculosis a case report

    Purpose. To highlight the importance of using the Farnsworth Panel D-15 Hue test in colour vision testing in patients on ethambutol treatment. Case Report. A 70 year-old lady received ethambutol as part of her anti-tuberculous regime. She developed blue-yellow colour defect detectable with the Farnsworth Panel D-15 Hue test, but not with the Isihara Pseudoisochromatic Plates. Ethambutol was immediately discontinued from her anti-tuberculous regime. Two months later, her colour vision returned to normal. Conclusion. This case report illustrates the importance of regular monitoring of patients receiving ethambutol for blue-yellow colour defect using the Farnsworth Panel D-15 Hue Test

    The importance of ophthalmic signs in the diagnosis of suprasellar meningioma - A case report

    A forty-two year old lady presented with gradual, painless, progressive blurring of vision of her left eye for four months. There were no other associated ocular or systemic complaints. Examination showed decreased visual acuity in both eyes and a pale optic disc on the left side. Visual field examination revealed a temporal field defect of the right eye which aroused the suspicion of an intracranial mass lesion. MRI of her brain revealed a suprasellar meningioma. We would like to emphasize the importance of visual field examination of both eyes in patients presenting with unilateral loss of vision

    Neonatal conjunctivitis a review

    Ophthalmia neonatorum remains a significant cause of ocular morbidity, blindness and even death in underdeveloped countries. The organisms causing ophthalmia neonatorum are acquired mainly from the mother’s birth canal during delivery and a small percentage of cases are acquired by other ways. Chlamydia and Neisseria are the most common pathogens responsible for the perinatal infection. Fortunately in most cases, laboratory studies can identify the causative organism and unlike other form of conjunctivitis, this perinatal ocular infection has to be treated with systemic antibiotics to prevent systemic colonization of the organism. Routine prophylaxis with 1% silver nitrate solution (crédés method) has been discontinued in many developed nations for the fear of development of chemical conjunctivitis
