    Enhancing Organizational Memory Through Virtual Memoryscapes: Does It Work?

    Enhancing cognitive memory through virtual reality represents an issue, that has never been investigated in organizational settings. Here, we compared a virtual memoryscape (treatment) – an immersive virtual environment used by subjects as a shared memory tool based on spatial navigation – with respect to the traditional individual-specific mnemonic tool based on the “method of loci” (control). A memory task characterized by high ecological validity was administered to 82 subjects employed by large banking group. Memory recall was measured, for both groups, immediately after the task (Phase 1) and one week later (Phase 2). Results show that (i) in Phase 1, the method of loci was more efficient in terms of recalling information than the to the virtual memoryscape; (ii) in Phase 2, there was no difference. Compared to the method of loci, the virtual memoryscape presents the advantages – relevant for organizations – of being collective, controllable, dynamic, and non-manipulable

    BUILDING VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT FOR EXPLOSIVE AND CBR TERRORIST ATTACKS

    Assessing the vulnerabilities of a building/site for a specific threat is one of the key issues in the risk assessment process. A vulnerability is defined as any weakness that can be exploited by an aggressor to make an asset susceptible to damage. The purpose of the vulnerability assessment process discussed in this paper is to identify the main vulnerabilities which influence a building’s risk level when a specific explosive or chemical, biological, radiological (CBR) threat arises. Vulnerability assessments are designed to provide an in-depth analysis of the characteristics of a facility and its associated elements to identify building weaknesses and lack of redundancy, as well as to determine protective or corrective actions that can be designed or implemented to reduce building vulnerabilities. This work proposes an innovative building vulnerability assessment method (BVAM), comprised of three steps. The first step, building criticality analysis (BCA), seeks to verify the criticality of several building aspects elaborated from best practices on the analysis of building structure and function. The result of this BCA determines if critical building components or systems, designed for the deterrence, detection, and limitation of damages, can continue to function properly during a crisis, and to ensure the correct operation of the emergency systems. The second step aims at characterising the application of a given number of specific threats to the building. The third step focuses on a final assessment of the level of vulnerability associated with the various applied threats, for the specific building and the specific assets to be protected. This result is achieved by employing a proposed seven-level vulnerability scale. The result of the evaluation of the level of vulnerability can be used for the final risk assessment phase

    Host predisposition by endogenous Transforming Growth Factor-β1 overexpression promotes pulmonary fibrosis following bleomycin injury

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive diffuse disease involving the lung parenchyma. Despite recent advances, the molecular mechanisms of the initiation and progression of this disease remain elusive. Previous studies have demonstrated TGFβ1 as a key effector cytokine in the development of lung fibrosis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this study we have used a transgenic mouse based strategy to identify the effect of overexpression of this key effector mediator on the development of pulmonary fibrosis in response to exogenous injury. We bred two lines (line 25 and 18) of transgenic mice (Tr+) that overexpressed active TGFβ1. Three-month old transgenic and wild type mice were subsequently wounded with intraperitoneal bleomycin. Mice were sacrificed at 6 weeks post-bleomycin and their lungs analysed histologically and biochemically.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The severity of lung fibrosis was significantly greater in the Tr+ mice compared to the wild type mice. Using an oligonucleotide microarray based strategy we identified discrete patterns of gene expression contributing to TGFβ1 associated pulmonary fibrosis.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This data emphasises the importance of a host predisposition in the form of endogenous TGFβ1, in the development of pulmonary fibrosis in response to an exogenous injury.</p

    The 1.4-GHz radio properties of hard X-ray-selected AGN

    We have analysed the NRAO Very Large Array Sky Survey and Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey data at 1.4 GHz and 843 MHz for a well-defined complete sample of hard X-ray AGN observed by INTEGRAL. A large number (70/79) of sources are detected in the radio band, showing a wide range of radio morphologies, from unresolved or slightly resolved cores to extended emission over several hundreds of kpc scales. The radio fluxes have been correlated with the 2-10 keV and 20-100 keV emission, revealing significant correlations with slopes consistent with those expected for radiatively efficient accreting systems. The high-energy emission coming from the inner accretion regions correlates with the radio emission averaged over hundreds of kpc scales (i.e. thousands of years)

    Risk for cancer development in familial Mediterranean fever and associated predisposing factors: an ambidirectional cohort study from the international AIDA Network registries

    Objective: Inflammation has been associated with an increased risk for cancer development, while innate immune system activation could counteract the risk for malignancies. Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a severe systemic inflammatory condition and also represents the archetype of innate immunity deregulation. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the risk for cancer development in FMF. Methods: The risk ratio (RR) for malignancies was separately compared between FMF patients and fibromyalgia subjects, Still's disease patients and Behçet's disease patients. Clinical variables associated with cancer development in FMF patients were searched through binary logistic regression. Results: 580 FMF patients and 102 fibromyalgia subjects, 1012 Behçet's disease patients and 497 Still's disease patients were enrolled. The RR for the occurrence of malignant neoplasms was 0.26 (95% Confidence Interval [CI.] 0.10-0.73, p=0.006) in patients with FMF compared to fibromyalgia subjects; the RR for the occurrence of malignant cancer was 0.51 (95% CI. 0.23-1.16, p=0.10) in FMF compared to Still's disease and 0.60 (95% CI. 0.29-1.28, p=0.18) in FMF compared to Behçet's disease. At logistic regression, the risk of occurrence of malignant neoplasms in FMF patients was associated with the age at disease onset (β1 = 0.039, 95% CI. 0.001-0.071, p=0.02), the age at the diagnosis (β1 = 0.048, 95% CI. 0.039-0.085, p=0.006), the age at the enrolment (β1 = 0.05, 95% CI. 0.007-0.068, p=0.01), the number of attacks per year (β1 = 0.011, 95% CI. 0.001- 0.019, p=0.008), the use of biotechnological agents (β1 = 1.77, 95% CI. 0.43-3.19, p=0.009), the use of anti-IL-1 agents (β1 = 2.089, 95% CI. 0.7-3.5, p=0.002). Conclusions: The risk for cancer is reduced in Caucasic FMF patients; however, when malignant neoplasms occur, this is more frequent in FMF cases suffering from a severe disease phenotype and presenting a colchicine-resistant disease

    Mourning and melancholia revisited: correspondences between principles of Freudian metapsychology and empirical findings in neuropsychiatry

    Freud began his career as a neurologist studying the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, but it was his later work in psychology that would secure his place in history. This paper draws attention to consistencies between physiological processes identified by modern clinical research and psychological processes described by Freud, with a special emphasis on his famous paper on depression entitled 'Mourning and melancholia'. Inspired by neuroimaging findings in depression and deep brain stimulation for treatment resistant depression, some preliminary physiological correlates are proposed for a number of key psychoanalytic processes. Specifically, activation of the subgenual cingulate is discussed in relation to repression and the default mode network is discussed in relation to the ego. If these correlates are found to be reliable, this may have implications for the manner in which psychoanalysis is viewed by the wider psychological and psychiatric communities

    Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) is a refractory and lethal interstitial lung disease characterized by loss of alveolar epithelial cells, fibroblast proliferation and extra-cellular matrix protein deposition. EBV, localised to alveolar epithelial cells of pulmonary fibrosis patients is associated with a poor prognosis. In this study we utilised a microarray-based differential gene expression analysis strategy to identify molecular drivers of EBV associated with lung fibrosis. A549 cells and an alveolar epithelial cell line infected with EBV (VAAK) were used to identify genes whose expression was altered by EBV reactivation. EBV reactivation by TGFbeta1 drives alterations in expression of non-canonical Wnt pathway mediators, implicating it in epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT), the molecular event underpinning scar production in tissue fibrosis. Cell invasion, EMT correlated transcripts expression, GSK-3b and c-Jun activation were altered in response to non-canonical Wnt pathway regulation. The role of EBV in promoting fibrosis can be attenuated by antiviral strategies and inhibition of Wnt signalling. Activation of non-canonical Wnt signalling pathway by EBV in epithelial cells suggests a novel mechanism of tissue fibrosis. These data present a framework for further description of the link between infectious agents and fibrosis, a significant disease burden

    Questa relazione illustra una tecnologia denominata GammaPix che utilizza le videocamere digitali come rivelatori di radiazioni ionizzanti penetranti. Nato dalla necessità di eliminare segnali spuri indotti dai raggi cosmici nelle immagini dei corpi celesti, l’approccio si è rivelato un metodo potente in grado di fornire un monitoraggio distribuito, capillare e a basso costo delle radiazioni. La tecnologia impiega la sensibilità intrinseca ai raggi gamma dei chip CCD e CMOS utilizzati nei sensori di immagine digitali delle videocamere di sorveglianza e delle fotocamere dei telefoni cellulari. Si descrive la risposta in funzione dell’energia dei fotoni, della dose e dela rateo di dose di alcuni telefoni cellulari, nonché alcune applicazioni mediche in corso di sviluppo. Infine si descrive una variante della tecnologia che fa uso dei telefoni cellulari come sensori virtuali di sorgenti virtuali posizionate in siti a scelta usando Google Maps. Tale tecnologia consente l’esecuzione di esercitazioni simulate ed è concepita per l’addestramento delle forze di pronto intervento
