    On a concept of genericity for RLC networks

    A recent definition of genericity for resistor-inductor-capacitor (RLC) networks is that the realisability set of the network has dimension one more than the number of elements in the network. We prove that such networks are minimal in the sense that it is not possible to realise a set of dimension n with fewer than n-1 elements. We provide an easily testable necessary and sufficient condition for genericity in terms of the derivative of the mapping from element values to impedance parameters, which is illustrated by several examples. We show that the number of resistors in a generic RLC network cannot exceed k+1 where k is the order of the impedance. With an example, we show that an impedance function of lower order than the number of reactive elements in the network need not imply that the network is non-generic. We prove that a network with a non-generic subnetwork is itself non-generic. Finally we show that any positive-real impedance can be realised by a generic network. In particular we show that sub-networks that are used in the important Bott-Duffin synthesis method are in fact generic.A.     Manipulating mentors' assessment decisions: Do underperforming student nurses use coercive strategies to influence mentors' practical assessment decisions?

    There is growing evidence of a culture of expectation among nursing students in Universities which leads to narcissistic behaviour. Evidence is growing that some student nurses are disrespectful and rude towards their university lecturers. There has been little investigation into whether they exhibit similar behaviour towards their mentors during practical placements, particularly when they, the students, are not meeting the required standards for practice. This paper focuses on adding to the evidence around a unique finding ��� that student nurses can use coercive and manipulative behaviour to elicit a successful outcome to their practice learning assessment (as noted in Hunt et al. (2016, p 82)). Four types of coercive student behaviour were identified and classified as: ingratiators, diverters, disparagers and aggressors, each of which engendered varying degrees of fear and guilt in mentors. The effects of each type of behaviour are discussed and considered in the light of psychological contracts. Mechanisms to maintain effective working relationships between student nurses and mentors and bolster the robustness of the practical assessment process under such circumstances are discussed

    Unveiling Dust-enshrouded Star Formation in the Early Universe: a Sub-mm Survey of the Hubble Deep Field

    The advent of sensitive sub-mm array cameras now allows a proper census of dust-enshrouded massive star-formation in very distant galaxies, previously hidden activity to which even the faintest optical images are insensitive. We present the deepest sub-mm survey of the sky to date, taken with the SCUBA camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope and centred on the Hubble Deep Field. The high source density found in this image implies that the survey is confusion-limited below a flux density of 2 mJy. However, within the central 80 arcsec radius independent analyses yield 5 reproducible sources with S(850um) > 2 mJy which simulations indicate can be ascribed to individual galaxies. We give positions and flux densities for these, and furthermore show using multi-frequency photometric data that the brightest sources in our map lie at redshifts z~3. These results lead to integral source counts which are completely inconsistent with a no-evolution model, and imply that massive star-formation activity continues at redshifts > 2. The combined brightness of the 5 most secure sources in our map is sufficient to account for 30 - 50% of the previously unresolved sub-mm background, and we estimate statistically that the entire background is resolved at about the 0.3 mJy level. Finally we discuss possible optical identifications and redshift estimates for the brightest sources. One source appears to be associated with an extreme starburst galaxy at z~1, whilst the remaining four appear to lie in the redshift range 2 < z < 4. This implies a star-formation density over this redshift range that is at least five times higher than that inferred from the ultraviolet output of HDF galaxies.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures (to appear as a Nature Article
