Wear rates in urban rail systems
A significant part of maintenance costs in urban rail systems (metro, tram, light rapid transit/light metro) is due to wheel-rail wear. Wear rates - measured for example as depth of wear per kilometre run (rolling stock) or per train passage (rails) - depend in a complex manner on several influence factors. Among
the most important are key design factors of the rolling stock (wheel profiles, suspension characteristics), of the track (distribution of curve radii, characteristics of switches and crossings, rail profiles), of the wheel-rail interface (lubrication, materials in contact, ambient characteristics), and of
operations (frequency of traction and braking, trainset inversion policy, maintenance policy etc.). When designing an urban rail system, all of these factors have to be under control in order to limit the costs due to wheel/rail reprofiling/grinding and replacement. The state of the art allows the calculation of
wear rates given quantitative input regarding the above factors. However, it is difficult to find in the literature experimental values for calibration of wear models and indications on what is a reasonable state-of-the-art wear rate for any given type of urban rail system. In this paper we present a structured
analysis of flange wear rates found in the literature and derived from the experience of the authors, for a variety of cases, including metros and mainline rail systems. We compare the wear rates and explain their relationship with the influence factors. We then relate the wear rates with the needs in terms of
wheel reprofiling/replacement. We estimate ranges for the calibration coefficients of wear models. We present the results in a way as to allow the designer of urban rail systems to derive values for target wear rates according to their specific conditions without the need for complex simulations
Oxygen content variation and cation doping dependence of (La)1.4(Sr1-yCay)1.6Mn2O7 (y = 0, 0.25, 0.5) bilayered manganites properties
The results of the synthesis and characterization of the optimally doped
(La)1.4(Sr1-yCay)1.6Mn2O7 solid solution with y=0, 0.25 and 0.5 are reported.
By progressively replacing the Sr with the smaller Ca, while keeping fixed the
hole-concentration due to the divalent dopant, the 'size effect' of the cation
itself on the structural, transport and magnetic properties of the bilayered
manganite has been analysed. Two different annealing treatments of the solid
solution, in pure oxygen and in pure argon, allowed also to study the effect of
the oxygen content variation. Structure and electronic properties of the
samples have been investigated by means of X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray
absorption spectroscopy measurements. Magnetoresistivity and static
magnetization measurements have been carried out to complete the samples
characterization. Oxygen annealing of the solid solution, that showed a limit
for about y=0.5, induces an increase of the Mn average valence state and a
transition of the crystal structure from tetragonal to orthorhombic while the
argon annealing induces an oxygen under-stoichiometry and, in turn, a reduction
of the Mn average valence state. Along with the Ca substitution, the
Jahn-Teller distortion of the MnO6 octahedra is reduced. This has been directly
connected to a general enhancement of the transport properties induced by the
Ca-doping. For the same cation composition, oxygen over-stoichiometry leads to
higher metal-insulator transition temperatures and lower resistivity values.
Curie temperatures (TC) reduce by increasing the Ca-doping. The lower TC for
all the annealed samples with respect to the 'as prepared' ones are connected
to the strong influence on the magnetic interaction of the point defects due to
the oxygen content variation.Comment: 49 pages, 13 figure
Consistent Image Decoding from Multiple Lossy Versions
With the recent development of tools for data sharing in social networks and peer to peer networks, the same information is often stored in different nodes. Peer-to-peer protocols usually allow one user to collect portions of the same file from different nodes in the network, substantially improving the rate at which data are received by the end user. In some cases, however, the same multimedia document is available in different lossy versions on the network nodes. In such situations, one may be interested in collecting all available versions of the same document and jointly decoding them to obtain a better reconstruction of the original. In this paper we study some methods to jointly decode different versions of the same image. We compare different uses of the method of Projections Onto Convex Sets (POCS) with some Convex Optimization techniques in order to reconstruct an image for which JPEG and JPEG2000 lossy versions are available

A combined CFD-experimental method for abrasive erosion testing of concrete
Serious damage may occur to concrete hydraulic structures, such as water galleries, spillways, and stilling basins, due to the abrasive erosion caused by the presence of solid particles in the flow. This underlines the importance of being capable in providing characterization of the concrete from the point of view of its vulnerability to abrasive erosion, in order to improve the design of the structure and the material selection. Nevertheless, the existing apparatus for concrete abrasive erosion testing are either far from allowing realistic simulation of the actual environment in which this phenomenon occurs, or show a large degree of complexity and cost. An alternative method has been developed with the aid of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). CFD was first employed to verify the effectiveness of a new laboratory equipment. Afterwards, a parameter has been introduced which, by successful comparison against preliminary experiments, proved suitable to quantify the effect of the fluid dynamic conditions on the concrete abrasive erosion, thereby opening the way to CFD-based customization of the apparatus. Nanosized Sodium-Doped Lanthanum Manganites: Role of the Synthetic Route on their Physical Properties
In this paper we present the results of the synthesis and characterisation of
nanocrystalline La1-xNaxMnO3+delta samples. Two synthetic routes were employed:
polyacrylamide-based sol-gel and propellant synthesis. Pure, single phase
materials were obtained with grain size around 35 nm for the sol-gel samples
and around 55 nm for the propellant ones, which moreover present a more broaden
grain size distribution. For both series a superparamagnetic behaviour was
evidenced by means of magnetisation and EPR measurements with peculiar features
ascribable to the different grain sizes and morphology. Preliminary
magnetoresistivity measurements show enhanced low-field (< 1 T)
magnetoresistance values which suggest an interesting applicative use of these

Strength in numbers:combining multi-source remotely sensed data to model plant invasions in coastal dune ecosystems
International audienceA common feature of most theories of invasion ecology is that the extent and intensity of invasions is driven by a combination of drivers, which can be grouped into three main factors propagule pressure (P), abiotic drivers (A) and biotic interactions (B). However, teasing apart the relative contribution of P, A and B on Invasive Alien Species (IAS) distributions is typically hampered by a lack of data. We focused on Mediterranean coastal dunes as a model system to test the ability of a combination of multi-source Remote Sensing (RS) data to characterize the distribution of five IAS. Using generalized linear models, we explored and ranked correlates of P, A and B derived from high-resolution optical imagery and three-dimensional (3D) topographic models obtained from LiDAR, along two coastal systems in Central Italy (Lazio and Molise Regions). Predictors from all three factors contributed significantly to explaining the presence of IAS, but their relative importance varied among the two Regions, supporting previous studies suggesting that invasion is a context-dependent process. The use of RS data allowed us to characterize the distribution of IAS across broad, regional scales and to identify coastal sectors that are most likely to be invaded in the future. © 2019 by the authors
Suppression of a Field Population of Aedes aegypti in Brazil by Sustained Release of Transgenic Male Mosquitoes
The increasing burden of dengue, and the relative failure of traditional vector control programs highlight the need to develop new control methods. SIT using self-limiting genetic technology is one such promising method. A self-limiting strain of Aedes aegypti, OX513A, has already reached the stage of field evaluation. Sustained releases of OX513A Ae. aegypti males led to 80% suppression of a target wild Ae. aegypti population in the Cayman Islands in 2010. Here we describe sustained series of field releases of OX513A Ae. aegypti males in a suburb of Juazeiro, Bahia, Brazil. This study spanned over a year and reduced the local Ae. aegypti population by 95% (95% CI: 92.2%-97.5%) based on adult trap data and 81% (95% CI: 74.9-85.2%) based on ovitrap indices compared to the adjacent no-release control area. The mating competitiveness of the released males (0.031; 95% CI: 0.025-0.036) was similar to that estimated in the Cayman trials (0.059; 95% CI: 0.011-0.210), indicating that environmental and target-strain differences had little impact on the mating success of the OX513A males. We conclude that sustained release of OX513A males may be an effective and widely useful method for suppression of the key dengue vector Ae. aegypti. The observed level of suppression would likely be sufficient to prevent dengue epidemics in the locality tested and other areas with similar or lower transmission
