Exchange Rate Determination with Systematic and Unsystematic Policy Regime Changes: Evidence From the Yen/Dollar Rate
This paper presents results of estimating an exchange rate equation in light of theoretical considerations regarding changes in sterilization and intervention policy and tax policy which imply that the coefficients in the equation will not behave as fixed parameters in a given sample period,as standard econometric practice assumes. We compare the results of ordinary least squares and a random coefficients model of the Japanese Yen-- U.S. dollar exchange rate during the floating period of July 1973 through June 1982.When systematic end of year policy changes affecting Japanese reserves are explicitly modeled, both OLS and the random coefficients model show increased explanatory power. The random coefficients model appears to be superior to OLS however; by allowing the coefficients to vary over time as required by the economic theory discussed above, estimates of the mean response coefficients for the floating period all have the hypothesized sign, and explanatory power is sharply increased.
Survey of education of Aboriginal children in selected Western Australian schools : (preliminary survey)
Information was sought late in 1972 about problems encountered by teachers in schools with a fairly high proportion of Aboriginal children. For this purpose a questionnaire was designed to elicit information about the school situation, the surrounding community, enrolment, age and experience of the teaching staff and actual pedagogical problems encountered and methods of dealing with them. Another principle aim was to ascertain the extent to which the curiculum had been adapted to local situations and to determine what implications this might have for pre-service and in-service training
Spin-guides and spin-splitters: Waveguide analogies in one-dimensional spin chains
Here we show a direct mapping between waveguide theory and spin chain
transport, opening an alternative approach to quantum information transport in
the solid-state. By applying temporally varying control profiles to a spin
chain, we design a virtual waveguide or 'spin-guide' to conduct individual spin
excitations along defined space-time trajectories of the chain. We explicitly
show that the concepts of confinement, adiabatic bend loss and beamsplitting
can be mapped from optical waveguide theory to spin-guides (and hence
'spin-splitters'). Importantly, the spatial scale of applied control pulses is
required to be large compared to the inter-spin spacing, and thereby allowing
the design of scalable control architectures.Comment: 5 figure
Beyond body maps: Information content of specific body parts is distributed across the somatosensory homunculus
The homunculus in primary somatosensory cortex (S1) is famous for its body part selectivity, but this dominant feature may eclipse other representational features, e.g., information content, also relevant for S1 organization. Using multivariate fMRI analysis, we ask whether body part information content can be identified in S1 beyond its primary region. Throughout S1, we identify significant representational dissimilarities between body parts but also subparts in distant non-primary regions (e.g., between the hand and the lips in the foot region and between different face parts in the foot region). Two movements performed by one body part (e.g., the hand) could also be dissociated well beyond its primary region (e.g., in the foot and face regions), even within Brodmann area 3b. Our results demonstrate that information content is more distributed across S1 than selectivity maps suggest. This finding reveals underlying information contents in S1 that could be harnessed for rehabilitation and brain-machine interfaces
Symmetric patterns with different luminance polarity (anti-symmetry) generate an automatic response in extrastriate cortex
Quantum phase transitions in photonic cavities with two-level systems
Systems of coupled photonic cavities have been predicted to exhibit quantum
phase transitions by analogy with the Hubbard model. To this end, we have
studied topologies of few (up to six) photonic cavities each containing a
single two-level system. Quantum phase space diagrams are produced for these
systems, and compared to mean-field results. We also consider finite effective
temperature, and compare this to the notion of disorder. We find the extent of
the Mott lobes shrink analogously to the conventional Bose-Hubbard model.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, updated typo
