    Modelling an above knee prosthesis-a kinematics approach

    An attempt has been made to mathematically model a totally mechanical passive type pneumatic damper controlled AK prosthesis for swing control. An Alimco, India made AK prosthesis was taken and was upgraded to a pneumatic damper controlled one. A CAD model of the same was made on ProE software and moment of inertia was found and the data were used for calculating the swing time using kinematics model approach. The prosthesis coupled with an electronic interface was experimented to find the swing time. The experimental results matched the theoretical ones within acceptable limits and it is concluded that kinematics model approach as given by the authors is an effective tool to design passive AK prosthesis and the model can also be used for designing active knee

    Dynamic phase transition in the conversion of B-DNA to Z-DNA

    The long time dynamics of the conformational transition from B-DNA to Z-DNA is shown to undergo a dynamic phase transition. We obtained the dynamic phase diagram for the stability of the front separating B and Z. The instability in this front results in two split fronts moving with different velocities. Hence, depending on the system parameters a denatured state may develop dynamically eventhough it is thermodynamically forbidden. This resolves the current controversies on the transition mechanism of the B-DNA to Z-DNA.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures.     Nonequilibrium tricriticality in one dimension

    We show the existence of a nonequilibrium tricritical point induced by a repulsive interaction in one dimensional asymmetric exclusion process. The tricritical point is associated with the particle-hole symmetry breaking introduced by the repulsion. The phase diagram and the crossover in the neighbourhood of the tricritical point for the shock formation at one of the boundaries are determined.Comment: 6 pages; 4 figure

    Ferric carboxymaltose: choice of treatment in postpartum anaemia in multispeciality zonal hospital of armed forces medical services

    Background: World Health Organization has defined postpartum anemia (PPA) as hemoglobin (Hb) of < 10 gm% during the postpartum period. The objective of the present study was to compare the safety and efficacy of ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) in the treatment of post-partum anaemia (PPA).Methods: A total of 214 patients were identified in a zonal hospital of Armed Forces Medical Services, between Jan 2019 and August 2019 who found to have PPA. Patients having hemoglobin (Hb) <10 g/dl were assigned to receive Intravenous FCM, as per the calculated dose. Changes in hemoglobin (Hb) and serum ferritin levels at 2 and 6 weeks after treatment were recorded and analyzed. Adverse effects to FCM administration were also recorded.Results: Significant rises in Hb and serum ferritin levels were observed. The mean increase in Hb after 2 weeks was 3.1±0.50 g/dl and 4.0±70 g/dl at 6 weeks. The mean increase in serum ferritin levels after 2 weeks was 210.40±38.50 and 270.25±14.60 ng/ml after 6 weeks. Adverse drug reactions were significantly less (p<0.001).Conclusions: Ferric carboxymaltose increases Hb level and restores iron stores faster without any severe adverse drug reactions. Patient tolerance was good after FCM injection
